Living V/S Existing: Notes from my coaching journey -Bimal Rath Bimal Rath
Reflections from my journey as a coach
Just clocked 1000 hours of coaching and was penning down my own learning as reflection. Needless to say, the learning has been immense, working with a variety of individuals, ranging from CXOs to senior level executives in corporations.
Over the years, it was useful to read up a few varied authors--to expand my own perspective, and often as a consequence of a coaching conversation.
Here is the pick of the thoughts that have remained with me, and must say have helped me grow as a coach..nothing new, but worth a re-mention.
On 19 June 2012 at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Landor CEO Mary Zalla gave two workshops to packed crowds on how to creatively sell creative work.
We all work hard to produce creative and, ideally, effective solutions. But we often don’t pay as much attention to how we share those solutions.
Getting the best and the most creative work produced is not just about selling. It is about inspiring your audience to see potential.
The first thing we need to do is to truly understand our audiences, empathize with them and their situation. We then need to have a few things at our disposal:
• Appreciation for the power of story versus plain facts
• Understanding of the confirmation bias
• Courage versus daring
• Awareness of the Asch Effect
• Fortitude and determination
Check out the deck from Mary’s Cannes presentation and read her article on a similar topic, “ Eight principles of creativity.”

9 Powerful Habits To Develop In 2016 -- No Matter What You DoFaisal Hoque
Look at things with a beginner's mind. A beginner's mind allows us to embrace the highest emotional qualities — such as enthusiasm, zeal, and optimism — to creatively move ourselves forward.
Success can be reached in a multitude of ways. The road you take is dependent upon what you want out of life.
Success is also subjective; if one chooses to live within one’s means and owes no debts, he or she may consider him- or herself successful, whereas another may see success in the numbers in their bank account.
Regardless of the definition, when we think of successful people, what attributes generally come to mind?
Happy. Confident. Relaxed. Positive. Strong.
As we get ready to welcome a new year and bid goodbye to another, I thought I’d share some of the habits I plan to practice this coming year to get through my adventures (both good and bad).

7 areas of attention for self improvement and personal growth v2 engChristiaan Tome
In this fast changing world more and more organisations focus on "human" development. Nowadays more and more employees are asking themselves this: 'What are my true talents and passions? What do I want to create? And what do I want to realise?'
This presentation wil kickstart your personal development and focus on 7 areas for self improvement and personal growth. Find out which skills are suitable for you. And check out the 'essentials' list for each area: TED-talks, online courses audio books, presentations and interesting books.
Integrate these 7 areas into your career plan and become the person you are born to be.
I would like to talk about the role of “heart” tools in our IA/UX practice. Often, our tools and methods are analytical and logic-oriented exercises. In this talk, I would like to suggest a fresh approach to our IA practice. We will explore “heart” tools and methods that are shown to be more persuasive than “head” methods – when push comes to shove.
First, we will discuss reasons heart tools have been left out, where head tools have dominated our field. These include west versus eastern philosophies, traditions, and a brief historical perspective.
We will then look at the different types of heart tools, their origins, and how these practices (often spiritual in nature) can be adapted to our IA practice, including: creative visualization, mental walkthroughs, and the practice of centeredness and connectedness.
Next, we will use real or near-real work-related examples and discuss how heart tools can be used in each situation, and how heart tools will help us get the type of results we want in our deliverables, meetings, workshops, presentations, and client relationships.
I see these ideas as a new layer on top of our current tools, and not as a replacement. Heart tools will elevate our practice to a whole new level of understanding and effectiveness, not only as IA practitioners, but also as engaged people who deeply understand and love our work, ourselves, others, and our world.

As creator of CREATIVITY CAMP with Gary Bunch, we work with companies seeking a better way to tap into the creativity of their employees. We will help you reframe the reality of your workplace and assist your team in exploring the barriers to unleashing their own creativity.
1. Be Creative!
2. Group Activity SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTION: What helps you to be creative?
3. “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” Mary Lou Cook
4. The Target of Life is a very helpful way to understand our individual and collective well-being.
5. When you’re centered in the heart of the Target of Life, you’re at your best and life seems brighter. You see clearly and therefore make optimal decisions. You feel peaceful, loving, energetic, and happy. You’re in a good position to handle just about anything. However, when things happen that go against our desires and expectations, it’s easy to get pulled off center.
6. We experience more fear and negativity. We say and do things we regret. The immune system weakens and our productivity declines. We lose touch with what’s really important to us. Unhealthy stress increases and our sensitivity toward others decreases. And the further away from the center we move, the worse it gets!
7. That’s why it’s so important to catch early signs of stress, and to use all of our creativity to stay as centered as possible. When we are centered in the heart on the Target of Life, difficulties still crop up, but we can handle them much more smoothly and effectively. The more centered we are, the greater our well-being, the wiser our choices, and the more effective we are in everything we do.
8. Creativity is the power to bring something new and useful into existence.
9. You are an enormously creative person! That creativity is always within you, and you must express it in order to experience the satisfaction and joy that is your birthright.
10. Terrorism, widespread public scandals, economic uncertainties, international conflicts, and a host of other problems have launched us into a turbulent, yet potential-filled 21st century. Has the full measure of our creativity ever been needed more?
11. A life brimming with creativity is no longer the luxury of a few; it’s the duty and privilege of all of us.
12. Group Activity SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTION: What are some factors that keep people from becoming more creative?
13. CAUTION! Roadblocks Ahead Roadblocks that typically prevent capable people from expressing their creativity more fully: Thinking “I’m not very creative.” Fear of criticism from others. “That’s not my job.” Stress, Laziness, Self-Criticism. “There’s only one right way.”
14. CAUTION! Roadblocks Ahead Wasting time on nonessentials. “You have to follow the rules.” Too much talk, too little doing. Fear of failure. Resistance to change. Limiting beliefs. Worrying about who gets credit. Lack of faith.
15. Though we express it in different ways and to varying degrees, creativity is a gift that has been given in abundance to each of us.
16. Continually remind yourself of this truth: You are a

• What is Creativity?
• The Creative Myth
• The Creative Process
• Awaken your spark
3. What is Creativity?
• Creativity is about fresh thinking. It doesn't
have to be new to the whole of humanity –
though that's always a bonus – but certainly
to the person whose work it is. Creativity
also involves making critical judgments
about whether what you're working on is
any good, whether it's a theorem, a design
or a poem (Ken Robison).
4. The Creative Myth
• There are various myths about creativity.
One is that only special people are
creative; another is that creativity is just
about the arts; a third is that it's all to do
with uninhibited "self-expression". None of
these is true. On the contrary, everyone has
creative capacities; creativity is possible in
whatever you do, and it can require great
discipline and many different skills (Ken
Robison).
5.
6. The Creative Process
• Creativity, like all forms of learning, is a personal process.
Individuals are unique with different talents and aptitudes
and different ways of getting to understand things.
• Also, creativity is not a linear process, in which you have
to learn all the necessary skills before you get started. It is
true that creative work in any field involves a growing
mastery of skills and concepts. It is not true that they have
to be mastered before the creative work can begin.
Focusing on skills in isolation can kill interest in any
discipline.
7. Creativity Drivers
• The real driver of creativity is deep hunger
for discovery and a passion for the work
itself. When people are motivated to learn,
they naturally acquire the skills they need
to get the work done. The mastery of the
skills grows as their creative ambitions
expand. Evidence of this process can be
found in any culture or discipline from tribal
dance troupes to scientists.
8. Creative Spark
• Facilitating the creative process takes
connoisseurship, judgment and a
commitment to learning. For creativity to
flourish, people have to feel free to
innovate without the constant fear of being
punished for failing. Too much focus on
success without taking into account the
creative process can constrain innovative
minds.
9.

11. Awaken your Spark
• What are the thoughts in your imagination?
• What problem would you like to fix?
• What are you most passionate about?
• What will you do for free?
12. Create
• You have all you need to awaken your
creative spark and birth that new
innovation, that will transform humanity.
• What’s your big idea?
• The time to start creating is now!!!
13. Summary
• Creativity is fresh thinking of new ideas or
better ways to approach an existing idea.
• Everyone can create
