14. Waste & Pollution
• A study estimated that fabricating one car produced 29 tons of waste
and 1,207 million cubic yards of polluted air.
• Extracting iron ore, bauxite, petroleum, copper, lead, and a variety of
other raw materials to process:
• Steel
• Aluminum
• Plastics
• Glass
• Rubber, and other products necessary to construct automobiles.
15. Waste & Pollution (Cont.)
• During the manufacturing of vehicles, the automobile industry causes
various types of pollution such as:-
• Pollution from heavy metals and thermosetting plastics used for making
the vehicles.
• Pollution from synthetic rubber used in making various parts of the
vehicles.
• Paints used for coloring the vehicle.
• The internal combustion engines of vehicles run on petroleum oil. Burning
of petroleum fuels emit pollutants to atmosphere such as carbon-di-oxide,
carbon monoxide, oxides of Nitrogen and Sulphur as well as various
aerosols.
16. The carbon footprint of a new car:
• 6 tonnes of CO2: Citroen C1, small size.
• 17 tonnes of CO2: Ford Mondeo, medium size.
• 35 tonnes of CO2: Land Rover Discovery, large size.
• Historian Mark Foster has estimated that “fully one-third of the total
environmental damage caused by automobiles occurred before they
were sold and driven.”
17. Electric Cars Concept
• Often called zero emission vehicles, are electric cars better for the
environment?
• Their Entire lifecycle from manufacture to use and to disposal needs to
be considered when determining their environmental impacts.
• Before they even hit the road, electric vehicles are actually responsible
for about 1 Ton more emissions than the traditional cars.
18. E-Cars in Pakistan
• No matter, how good the EVs may be in comparison to the
conventional vehicles, the industry of electric cars cannot grow in
Pakistan before the electricity outages in the country are reduced.
• In Pakistan, the concept of electric cars does not exist, because no
such cars have been brought into the market yet.
• In Pakistan, there are many areas which suffer from long hours of
load-shedding, but the price of each unit also increases along time.
• For an average household, an additional Rs.10-20,000 in their
electricity bill would be overrated compared to a petrol car.
19. Solution
• Reduce waste by establishing good Standard Operating Procedures.
• Substituting less toxic or non-toxic products.
• Modifying processes and finding new alternatives.
• Reuse or recycle your wastes whenever possible, rather than
disposing of them.
• Reducing consumption or usage of a polluting product (Fossil Fuels).
• Proper treatment of wastes & proper discharges and disposals of a
pollutant.
