BOOKISH DEFINITION
Definition of IMPORT
A good or service brought into one country from another .
Along with EXPORT, IMPORTs form the backbone of
international trade.The higher the value of IMPORTs
entering a country, compared to the value of EXPORT, the
more negative that country's balance of trade becomes.
Definition of EXPORT
A function of international trade whereby goods produced in
one country are shipped to another country for future sale
or trade.The sale of such goods adds to the producing
nation's gross output. If used for trade, EXPORT are
exchanged for other products or services. EXPORT are one
of the oldest forms of economic transfer, and occur on a
large scale between nations that have fewer restrictions on
trade, such as tariffs or subsidies.
Deficiency
Pakistan’s international trade is suffering from huge amount of deficit
due to low demand for its EXPORT.

Trade Deficit stood at US$3.946 billion
in 2010.
Major Export Of Pakistan
 EXPORT in Pakistan increased to 191408 PKR Million in December of
2012 from 181961 PKR Million in November of 2012.
 1957 Until 2012, Pakistan EXPORT averaged 30238.13 PKR Million
reaching an all time high of 210208 PKR Million.
 March of 2011 and a record low of 51 PKR Million in April of 1958.
MAJOR EXPORT OF PAKISTAN
Pakistan EXPORT lots of different items to a dozen of
countries. Following is the list of EXPORT items.

Rice
Pakistan being an agro-based economy has natural abundance of all agricultural
products including food items. Rice is the third largest crop after wheat and cotton.

• ACCOUNTS for 6.7% in value added in agriculture and 1.6% in GDP.

• Basmati accounts for 2% of EXPORT
• In 1987-88, the government allowed rice export also by the private sector.
•REAP members managed to export over 2,000,000 tons of rice from Pakistan.
Cotton
 Pakistan is the fourth largest producer of cotton in
the world
 Average production of 1,610TMT.
 Pakistan is also the fourth largest consumer of
cotton
 Average consumption of 1,573TMT.
 On average Pakistan IMPORTs 92TMT and EXPORT
98TMT.
 CULTIVATED IN PUNJAB, SINDH (Tharparkar,
Golarchi, Mityari,Tando AllahYar, Hyderabad,
Thatha, Badin, Sahiwal, Matli,Talhar,Tando
Muhammad Khan, Sanghar and Mirpur Khas).
 Pakistan has earned $ 425 million from
export of cotton
 2 million bales of cotton was destroyed during
the floods 2010.
 Exported to India from Pakistan is 'short staple'
of cotton while the imported one is long and
“extra long staple".

Leather Products are Hong Kong, Italy,
China Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Turkey,
India, South Africa, Spain, Japan, France
& Indonesia.
Mangoes
Pakistani Mango is one of the most delicious products in the
world, which is being exported in large quantities from
Pakistan to Europe, Middle East & America by air and to the
gulf by sea in reefers Containers.
Pakistan produces 5.86 percent world’s mangoes being the third
largest producer.

MAJOR IMPORT OF PAKISTAN
 IMPORTs in Pakistan increased to 356899
PKR Million in December of 2012 from
346229 PKR Million in November of 2012.
imports in Pakistan is reported by the
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. Historically,
from 1957 until 2012, Pakistan imports
averaged 49871.94 PKR Million reaching an
all time high of 380672.13 PKR Million in
December of 2011 and a record low of 96 PKR
Million in April of 1959.
Main IMPORT partners are:
 United Arab Emirates (19 percent),
 China (15 percent), Saudi Arabia (10 percent)
 Kuwait (8 percent).

 Pakistan’s IMPORTs are also highly concentrated
in few items namely, machinery, petroleum and
petroleum products, chemicals, transport
equipment, edible oil, iron and steel, fertilizer
and tea.These IMPORTs accounted for 73% of
total IMPORTs during 2011-12.
 Among these categories machinery,
petroleum/petroleum products and chemicals
accounted for 53.4% of total IMPORTs.

Machinery
Pakistan imported machinery and equipment worth $212 million IMPORT of
machinery and equipment during 2012.
Country’s overall IMPORT of raw material used for making wide range of
machinery items, also recorded highest increase to around Rs 1.70 billion in the
same period.
Imported from third country through Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Qatar and has
risen by over 35 percent during Jan- May 2012.
Petroleum
The country`s overall petroleum IMPORTs for July-August,2012 mainly for power
generation, stood at $2.583 billion.
Refined petroleum products IMPORT, including fuel and furnace oil surged by a massive
91.5 percent during the two-month period to $1.717 billion against $897.138 million in the
corresponding period 2011.
Pakistani utilities are unable to meet the demand requirements, despite having sufficient
rainfall during the monsoon season to generate hydropower and Importing high volumes of
fuel oil to maximize the oil-fired thermal plants.
On the other hand, the petroleum rudimentary IMPORTs during the period under review
declined by 8.8 percent due to under-performance of the local refineries.

Tea
Pakistan has Imported 8.052 million kilos of
tea worth $20.891 million in August 2012.
Tea imports decline to 89,819 tons ($186
million) in July-June 2008-09 as compared to
101,000 tons ($188 million) in the
corresponding period of the last fiscal year as
high prices and import duty forced packers
and Importers to select for slow buying.
The Pakistan Tea Association is an
independent non-profit making body
dedicated to promoting tea and its unique

Iron And Steel
The locally produced hot roll material is
available at Rs 38,000 per ton where as the
same Imported from Ukraine is sold at Rs
39,000 per ton in the local market.
The total IMPORT of iron and steel stood at
$570.52 million (in July-December)2012 to
$685.52 million previous year.
The quantity-wise IMPORT of the iron and
steel products also saw a major decline of 36
percent during the period 2010.
The steel consumption averages between
four to five million tons annually. For
instance, in the last year, steel consumption
stood at about 4.2 million tons, in which
Pakistan Steel Mills contributed about 25
percent by production.
Garments
Textile and Garment are two of Pakistan's
principal industries contributing more than 67%
to total export earnings, accounting for around
46% of total manufacturing and employing over
38% of the manufacturing labour force.

has significantly improved the quality and
productivity of Pakistan textile products in the
last few years
The Government of Pakistan is targeting over
10 billion of EXPORT of textiles and garments
made-ups in the successive years. IMPORT of
textile machinery has registered an impressive
growth of 66.29% in the current fiscal year.

  • 6. BOOKISH DEFINITION Definition of IMPORT A good or service brought into one country from another . Along with EXPORT, IMPORTs form the backbone of international trade.The higher the value of IMPORTs entering a country, compared to the value of EXPORT, the more negative that country's balance of trade becomes. Definition of EXPORT A function of international trade whereby goods produced in one country are shipped to another country for future sale or trade.The sale of such goods adds to the producing nation's gross output. If used for trade, EXPORT are exchanged for other products or services. EXPORT are one of the oldest forms of economic transfer, and occur on a large scale between nations that have fewer restrictions on trade, such as tariffs or subsidies.

Rice is the third largest crop after wheat and cotton. • Grown Over 10% OfTheTotal Cropped Area •Valued Cash Crop & Major Export • ACCOUNTS for 6.7% in value added in agriculture and 1.6% in GDP. •Different varieties •Super Basmati, •Basmati PK-385, •Irri-6, Irri-9 •GROWN IN PUNJAB, SINDH and KPK. • Basmati accounts for 2% of EXPORT • In 1987-88, the government allowed rice export also by the private sector. •REAP members managed to export over 2,000,000 tons of rice from Pakistan.

MAJOR IMPORT OF PAKISTAN  IMPORTs in Pakistan increased to 356899 PKR Million in December of 2012 from 346229 PKR Million in November of 2012. imports in Pakistan is reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. Historically, from 1957 until 2012, Pakistan imports averaged 49871.94 PKR Million reaching an all time high of 380672.13 PKR Million in December of 2011 and a record low of 96 PKR Million in April of 1959.

Imported from third country through Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Qatar and has risen by over 35 percent during Jan- May 2012.
  • 28. Petroleum The country`s overall petroleum IMPORTs for July-August,2012 mainly for power generation, stood at $2.583 billion. Refined petroleum products IMPORT, including fuel and furnace oil surged by a massive 91.5 percent during the two-month period to $1.717 billion against $897.138 million in the corresponding period 2011. Pakistani utilities are unable to meet the demand requirements, despite having sufficient rainfall during the monsoon season to generate hydropower and Importing high volumes of fuel oil to maximize the oil-fired thermal plants. On the other hand, the petroleum rudimentary IMPORTs during the period under review declined by 8.8 percent due to under-performance of the local refineries.

The total IMPORT of iron and steel stood at $570.52 million (in July-December)2012 to $685.52 million previous year. The quantity-wise IMPORT of the iron and steel products also saw a major decline of 36 percent during the period 2010. The steel consumption averages between four to five million tons annually. For instance, in the last year, steel consumption stood at about 4.2 million tons, in which Pakistan Steel Mills contributed about 25 percent by production.

IMPORT of textile machinery has registered an impressive growth of 66.29% in the current fiscal year.
