The document discusses authentic learning experiences and constructivism. It explains that constructivism posits that learners construct their own knowledge based on past knowledge and understanding connections between new information. Authentic learning experiences emphasize real-world tasks and scenarios over abstract instruction, and involve knowledge construction rather than simple reproduction. Examples provided include scenario-based learning exercises involving engineering design challenges and international service learning projects.
Aalto Entrepreneurship Society was established in 2009 by a group of students in Helsinki. The problem we want to solve is that the best students don't thrive to be entrepreneurs. We are creating an eco-system in the new Aalto University and Finland that will create successful companies.
Making learning conscious - FemTechConf 2021Clare Sudbery
(Making Tech Better podcast: https://www.madetech.com/resources/podcasts/)
At Made Tech we are currently running two academies per year. For each session we recruit sixteen diverse individuals with minimal coding experience. We pay them a salary to spend twelve weeks training full time in modern software development techniques, and then we take them on as software consultants.
From small beginnings and over a period of many years we have built a highly diverse and effective training programme. In this webinar we will share some of the principles and techniques we use to make this work.
Key takeaways:
How to recruit diverse fledgling engineers
How to create a learning culture
How and why academy programmes benefit your whole organisation
Tips for grabbing and holding attention in online coursesDr Graeme Salter
Just because you put learning material online doesn't mean that students will engage with it (or even view it). This presentation looks at some tips for grabbing and holding attention in online courses.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

4. Authentic Learning Experiences
In other words
Learner´s construct their own knowledge
Knowledge is not transferred into learner´s brain
A well must produce its own water
– Farsi Proverb
6. Authentic Learning Experiences
Is this another buzzword?
How about senior projects, hands-on
activities, internships, etc.?
What is the difference?
7. Authentic Learning Experiences
Traditional Approach
It links curriculum and teaching methods such that an educator can
deliver knowledge to as many students possible within a short
period of time.
According to NCREL [2005], this assumes that properly managed
instruction enables most students to acquire the skills and
knowledge needed to continue to learn. Practice and
repetition, with frequent tests of recall and recitation, characterize
this approach. This approach is the only one that many parents
and educators have ever known, and their level of comfort with this
model will make it very difficult to supplant.
8. Authentic Learning Experiences
Characteristics of Constructivist Learning Environment
Multiple representation of reality
Multiple representations avoid oversimplification and represent the
complexity of the world
Emphasis on knowledge construction instead of reproduction
Emphasis on real tasks in an meaningful context rather than abstract
instruction out of context
Scenario based learning instead of predetermined sequence of
instruction
Thoughtful reflection on experience
Enable context and content dependent instruction
Collaborative construction of knowledge
9. Authentic Learning Experiences
Scenario-Based Learning (SBL)
Create a scenario that represents a realistic situation
Students make decisions through a guided process
Learning occurs when the learner goes through the
experience, regardless of the final outcome
12. Hyatt Skywalk Strategy

ceiling
Greatest structural tragedy in the US
Two skywalks collapsed dumping 65 tons of
concrete, metal, glass and dance spectators

13. Hyatt Skywalk Strategy
Jack Gillum, who was in-charge of the $50
million Hyatt Project said in an interview that
any first-year engineering student could
figure it out (the cause).
Your task as an engineering student is to
conduct an investigation and determine the
cause.
14. Hyatt Skywalk Strategy
What happened?
What were the building codes and where
they observed?
Were there any signals? Were they
ignored?
Theories (vibration, poor workmanship, bad
material, design change, etc.)

16. Authentic Learning Experiences
Entrepreneurial Education
Involves the learners in activities that deal with a real-
life problem
Involve real people in real time, and therefore it contain
elements of drama and dilemma
Content knowledge is usually embedded in the situation
Unstructured problems
Value beyond classroom
Personally meaningful and fulfilling
33. Authentic Learning Experiences
International Service Learning projects
• Coconut de-husking
• Human powered home lighting (with SDSU)
• Water delivery system (in Guatemala)
