Audience Attraction - Question 4 & 5
1.
2. For my audience research, I didn’t think that gathering too much
knowledge was a good idea. Allot of research would have to be
tallied up and seeing as I choice to work on my own, this job
would become time consuming and difficult to handle.
Another difficulty that could of occurred could of been the lack of
authenticity as the age group that my film was targeting consisted
of a teenage era.
Teenagers can tend to be rebellious and/ or mischievous in the
smallest of matters which could cause them to not take any sort
of survey seriously, to the extent were any received data could
become unreliable.
This would mean that any data taken in would become data that not
only affects the my view as the director but could lead to me
considering a whole new plot, which could become a major set-
back in the film.
3. Instead of constructing a survey, I decided to interview people
that I knew, who I thought of as mature teenagers, who not
only watched films occasionally but also have experience in
developing and criticising, in the entertainment industry of
film and music. One aspect that I did keep in mind when
interviewing was the fact that I knew the two participants,
which could ion fact mean that the answers may be
subconsciously biased, due to them not wanting to interrogate
my opening to a degree that it may be seem ‘wounding’. This
thought could possibly mean that by trying to avoid unreliable
data, I’ve managed to gain data that may be unreliable to a
degree. The videos of the interviewees are shown below
4. In some cases, I did take in criticism from
audiences that were off of YouTube.
Comments such as these tend to be unbiased
as the person may not know anything to do
with me but are only interested in looking at
my opening. The next slide demonstrates two
of the comments I got from the opening film.
5.
6. As you can see, one of the commenters mentioned the
soundtrack at the beginning. This tells me that I don’t have to
put as much time into the sound for my start as audience
members get a feeling of the film, which I is what I wanted to
create (For more information on the developing of the music
track and how I created it, see question 6 which looks at ‘Music/
Sound’ and 7 on the slide ‘Improvements – Sound’
7. This commenter establishes her
thoughts with depth towards
the start of my opening,
mentioning my cinematography
as my shot could of started out
‘blurred’ and then slowly faded
in the ‘blurred shot to be
focused and clear’.
As I had already finalised my edited piece, I couldn’t
do anything else to take on the advice, however,
aspects that did work well were said by the same
commenter. She goes on to mention ’great use of
editing’.
They also add that they liked the ‘eerie’ atmosphere
which ‘went well with the genre’.
She also adds that she likes the shot where the
protagonist, comes from off the camera shot to
running in front of it.
8. Considering that my audience research was kept to a
small degree, I think that branching my audience
feedback towards those audience members who I
may not know too well could be an improvement.
This would avoid any reason for the person to ‘feel
sympathetic’ to exaggerate any scenes that they say is
‘wonderful’ when really in fact, they look like a
toddler could of done them it better.
