Biology 118 – Assignment #4Scientific Article Summary and Crit.docxjasoninnes20
Biology 118 – Assignment #4
Scientific Article Summary and Critique
Your assignment is to find a scientific ‘primary journal article’ that reports on any marine biology topic you find interesting. ‘Primary journal articles’ are the original sources where the results of experiments are published. Primary research article’s should have sections similar to ‘introduction’, ‘methods’ or materials and methods’, ‘results’ and ‘discussion’. Often these articles are not first thing that comes up in a google search. A good way to find them is to use alternate web search engines like ‘www.googlescholar.com’ and pubmed ‘www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/’. A second way to find primary research articles is to look up your favourite marine biologist’s personal webpage. They will often link to their own scientific publications.
At DePaul, our library system should allow you to access most articles for free. If a site asks you to pay for an article do not do it (some of your tuition money goes to this). You can ask me, or your librarian how to get the article for free. Once you have found your article, answer the following questions:
1. Provide a full reference for the scientific article you chose. You will need the following information.
Author names (all of them): _______________________________________
Year of Publication: ____________________
Title of article: __________________________________________________
Journal name: ___________________
Volume: ___________
Pages: ____________
Your reference will be written in the following format:
Authors. Year. Title. Journal. Volume. Pages.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
For example:
Cousteau, J. 1997. The effects of coral bleaching on survival of Great Barrier reef corals. Marine ecology. Volume 231: pg 23-30.
(if there are multiple authors, list them one after another (separated by commas) in the order they appear on the paper)
Cousteau, J., Williams, A. 1997. The effects of coral bleaching on survival of Great Barrier reef corals. Marine ecology. Volume 231: pg 23-30.
2. Write a short summary of the article in your own words (maximum 300 words). These articles are challenging to read, so don’t worry if you don’t understand everything!
3. What is the most important message from the article (the take home message).
4. What terms, topics or concepts did you come across that you are unfamiliar with or feel you should know more about to better understand the article? (don’t worry if there are a bunch of these, list a few that you think are most important)

Autism is a complicated progressive disability. Researchers think that Autism exhibits itself during the age of 18 to 36 months old. The illness is the effect of a neurological condition that has an influence on natural brain performance, effecting promotion of the individual’s social and communication abilities. A student with an autism disorder will have a problem with non-verbal skills, and difficulty with activities which involve an environment of play and/or joking. They could have uncommon replies to society, connections to items, refusal to accept an adjustment in their daily routines, and severe behavior challenges.
Autism Challenges
I am Interested in understanding Autism behavior challenges to improve classroom management. As a Special Education teacher understanding Autism behaviors can be very beneficial. A projection of 1 in every 68 citizens in the country has various types of autism; boys are more prevalent than girls. Several professionals think that this (ASD) is linked hereditary or through the atmosphere. Studies show in a classroom of 18 or more. Typically, at least two of the classroom children for each one student are diagnosed with (ASD). Children with (ASD) show disruptive behaviors, and many of them have problems like harming self and anger tantrum. Behaviors form anxiety for parents and specialists, because it inconsistent with the development of desired behaviors and communication skills (DSM-5, 2013), and have risks on child himself and others. Findings show after researching over a hundred teachers in a public major school of students who strugglers with ASDs.
Lack of classroom management, and inconsistent strategies played a huge factor in behaviors. An effort to be made by schools to address the teacher’s perception of causes of challenging behavior as it has an influence on their choice of management strategies. Also, the teachers agreed that the behavior was learned,
and could be improved, but they did not often use strategies that are commonly considered to be effective, at least within the fields of ABA and PBS (Baron, Groden, & Lipsitt 2006). Consistency and reinforcement, they are solutions for resolving occurring behaviors, which increase the likelihood that behavior will continue to occur or occur more often (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007).
Keywords and help with searches
Definition of Keywords is described as thoughts in a subject area that drive and tell what your content in tells. Phrased or keywords are put into the “search queries” or search engine to generate various types of information, descriptions, film, and duplicates pertaining to your content. The keywords are vital to the search because they are the key player among what a person is probing for and the matter provide to fill up that need. The significa ...

CHAPTER 8Introduction
Introduction
As an undergraduate, it’s easy to think of psychology as this very static discipline, and if you want more information about some type of behavior, you conduct a search and the information comes to you. As you fulfill the curriculum of your
undergraduate program, your professors and your online courses bring you information,
and your textbooks provide a wealth of knowledge about the subject matter. The Voices
from the Workplace feature box describes a passive approach to learning and under-
standing human behavior. Here I would encourage you to take a more active learning
approach—that is, if you want to get a sense of what psychology is all about, you have to
go and do psychology. We belong to an active and engaging discipline that is passionate
about all aspects of human behavior, and although we do share knowledge in various
forms of writing (journal articles, books, websites), interacting with peers and profession-
als in a conference setting can provide the energy and “juice” about the research enter-
prise. So I suggest that you go and do psychology: Work to become an active contributor to
our understanding of human behavior as well as a consumer of psychological knowledge.

After a thorough self-assessment, I came up with a personal SWOT a.docxcoubroughcosta
After a thorough self-assessment, I came up with a personal SWOT analysis that took into account my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. This discussion inquires me about my strengths and opportunities. Regarding my strengths, first of all, when I was engaged in a certain task, I was very forced. For example, I spent a lot of time completing my tasks and being proactive in all forums. I also have a strong ability to track activities. In addition, I boast of a balance between work and life. I am able to go to class, go to work, and take care of my family. I am an ambitious person and I am very interested in courses, research, research and leadership. I also have the ability to write well. I always like to write academics and technology. This has greatly improved my calligraphy by hand and numbers.
On discovery of my potential strengths, I have further realized and identified various opportunities that are open to me; so that I can improve my strengths and gradually overcome my weaknesses. First, I am able to involve other people to provide feedback about their experiences when interacting with me. This way, I will be able to rectify where possible. Moreover, I have the opportunity to receive coaching in order to better my leadership skills and personal skills. In order to be able to make my deliberations quickly, I have the chance to improve my aptitude to ensure quick completion of tasks assigned. This way, I will be able to learn from other people and develop equanimity about various tasks.
Ending this discussion, I believe my best interest area lies in writing and I am willing to improve it even more in near future.

2. Personal Statement In preparation for graduation with my BA in Psychology from Argosy University Online, I have created this personal statement to reflect my growth to this point and goals for the future. In this presentation, I will reflect upon my personal development and goals, my professional development and goals, and I will provide examples of what I have accomplished thus far. On a personal level, my development while attending Argosy University has been profound as I have not only learned more about the world of psychology in the pursuit of my degree, but I have also learned more about myself. Because of my Interpersonal Communications and Conflict Management courses, as well as reflections on multiculturalism, I am more aware of my personal biases and how to set them aside, have developed improved listening strategies, and have a better understanding of conflict management. I have also grown with confidence as I have continued to meet my goals for scholastic achievement and now have a GPA of 3.95.
3. Resume Additionally, my continued pursuit of knowledge has led me to find new learning strategies which I will have for life. These tools are things I feel everyone can benefit from, and may be a source of research in my future. For example, spaced-repetition systems such as Anki (Elmes, n.d.) are free and show the application of a wealth of cognition and learning research (Ashcraft and Radvansky, 2010). Right now, it seems that only a niche group of individuals utilize SRS in digital format, but I am working on a research paper for class that I hope will demonstrate how useful this can be in the work place, at school, and even at home. I use Anki for psychology, Japanese, and see potential for it to be used in other aspects of my life as well. My personal goals include retaining the knowledge I have gained after graduation by following psychology journals as they are published, continuing to study what I have learned through research and SRS even after my courses have ended, and using other resources such as RSS feeds to get up to date information from relevant websites (i.e., NIH, APA, etc.). I also have a strong interest in Japan and am putting forth a great effort to learn the Japanese language as well as expose myself to Japanese culture as much as possible. This knowledge, in addition to expanding my repertoire, will be a huge help as the area in which I live near Seattle has a high population of individuals from various Asian cultures. I am also investigating continuing education with hemi-sync as The Monroe Institute (2011) recently announced continuation credits have become available for counselors.
4. Resume On a professional level, I have continued to work full time throughout my time at Argosy University and have gathered experience in a few different fields. During my time working at United Therapeutics, I was promoted from Receptionist to Office Manager over the course of a few years. Because of starting at the bottom and moving closer to the top, I was able to witness how power differentials affected communication in the work place first hand. Because I worked with many different departments within the company which also had a very diverse population, I also came to understand how silos can be formed and the importance of breaking down barriers with healthy communication to promote teamwork. After working at United Therapeutics for several years, I moved to Washington State, where I now live. I now work in customer service at a call center for a not-for-profit insurance organization, Community Health Plan of Washington. I am proud to be a supporter of their cause, to provide “access to affordable, high-quality medical care services” (CHPW, n.d., p. 1), and I am also a member of our Core Values team which is actively working toward restructuring the values within the company for better teamwork between our various departments and improved service for our members and providers. Once again, I am applying research from cognition and learning here to try and change how we do training within the organization as well as more effective ways to communicate ideas to one another.
5. Resume To sum up the strengths I have gathered over the year, I am an innovative and open-minded thinker, I can type 80-110 WPM, and I learn just about anything that can be readily explained to me quickly. When I set out to accomplish a goal, it is rare when I do not complete it, and I make my strides with a positive attitude. I see the glass as entirely full; just because it’s half full of oxygen and have full of water does not mean that we should value the space any less. Because I find working toward greater efficacy and better practices within organizations to be such a rewarding pursuit, I am interested in investigating a future in Industrial/Organizational Psychology for my future professional goals. The Core Values team that I work on with Community Health Plan of Washington is giving me valuable experience as well as letting me contribute to my community. In the not-to-distant future, however, working with human resources or as a counselor’s aide may also be beneficial that could help me expand my experience and knowledge base in this area. Argosy University Online also has a Masters program for I/O Psychology which I am considering as it would allow me to continue to work and continue my education as I have been doing.
6. Resume In preparation for setting clearer goals for my future and transitioning away from obtaining my BA, I have spent a lot of time in recent months looking at the requirements for obtaining various Masters degrees in psychology from several schools as well as the careers that can be obtained after graduation with said degrees. I have created pros and cons lists, considered how combining interests such as my study of Japanese language and culture can contribute to my future possibilities, and am gradually narrowing my focus so that I can commit to a course where I believe I will be able to contribute the most to the communities I have access to. Although I still have a way to go, the process of editing my personal statement through this course will definitely help me hone in and find the path which is best for me and my family.
