- 6. Reflection Reflection onMy Education As may be evidenced at this point, I am a considerably older student than most who are in this BA of Psychology program at Argosy. This life experience brings a depth of personal and professional exposure that younger students may not have, and it also brings its share of challenges. I have crashed through some boundaries in terms of stretching my brain power and tackled some assignments and courses I had great trepidation in engaging. Then there is the physiology of being an older student – I haven’t had this little sleep in many, many years. I spent a long time in account and senior management in corporate advertising and marketing service environments. Consequently, I have had extensive exposure to interpersonal, oral and written communication. These were, and continue to be my strengths. I have learned, however, through my studies at Argosy to be mindful of document length requirements as well as making sure that objectives of assignments are individually and responsibly met. Interestingly, the most challenging courses were not specifically geared to psychology but were requirements of the degree. These were the algebra and statistics classes. Research projects were also challenging – but very fulfilling. Exposure to general research and projects requiring research methodology were great academic learning experiences. Review of Codes of Ethics for both the American Counseling Association and the American Psychological Association were valuable as I prepare for a career in counseling. Â

I enjoyed theclassroom experience and while I understand the interests of the University in creating online programs, the lack of face-to-face interaction with the instructor and other classmates is missed. The classroom enriches the diversity experience as well. I learned and relearned psychological theories and about those who authored and influenced them. This is the heart of my passion in this field, and I feel I have developed significantly in my critical thinking about psychological issues. I emerge from Argosy University well-prepared for graduate school. Reflection Page Two

- #3 I came to the study psychology late in life; I wish I had started earlier. Nonetheless, I complete my undergraduate degree this spring, with the intent of entering Loyola University’s School of Social Work for a master’s degree in Applied Social Psychology focusing on community gerontology counseling. My interest in this field is driven partly because of my own age, but also because I believe there is great need for mental health professionals in this area for the elderly, their families and our communities as they together we face the challenges of aging. My hope is that as a licensed MSW, I can impact individuals and groups to improve their quality of life and well-being. I experience soul-reaching contribution in the intimate dialogue of one-to-one and small group counseling; however, I hope that my effort through organizational counseling will have further reach and impact, such as a public advocacy work for the elder community. I spent many years in a corporate environment where the essence of my work centered on relationship management. As an account director in various marketing services companies, developing and nurturing internal associates as well as maintaining the delicate balance of client needs and company objectives were key responsibilities. Business management in the creative and production of our agency’s work were also important, however the service I provided in human connection became my most valued experience. I functioned as a senior representative to the executive management team, facilitated internal and external group events and led sales acquisition teams. When I left the corporate world, it was quite natural for me to focus on this building on this experience, but transitioning to a different model and methodology. I trained as a life coach and currently work counseling clients as well as serving as director at a holistic health practice where I also manage a staff of practitioners. Our practice is committed to the holistic principles of mind/body/spirit health. We support our clients/patients in discovering what keeps them from experiencing their best versions of themselves – mentally, physically and spiritually, and accompany them to a more accessible life of whole health and wellness. It is a mission of optimal care and concern – which we attempt to emulate in every aspect of contact with them throughout their time spent with us. It is through my exposure to this environment coupled with my interest in human connection that I decided to go back to school to complete my degree with the social services focus. I chose Argosy University because of its BA in Psychology program with classes here in Chicago. It offered intense exposure to the discipline of psychology which I desired for a deeper understanding of human connection and challenge through a counseling curriculum. My studies at Argosy have assisted me in my relationships with my personal and our Practice clients enhancing and enriching both. I am a woman with a deep sense and commitment to service. There are many ways that service to others can be expressed and my personal and family lives are examples of this primary priority in my life. The purest expression of this love and dedication is the cornerstone of my life: my energetic 88-year-old mother. It is through her inspiration and model of courage, grace and sense of humor that I have embarked on this journey to support elders like her as well as those not as vibrant. The business world, where I spent so much of my professional energy, may not seem to be an optimal environment for this expression of service; however my focus on human relationships has always afforded me the opportunity to experience my commitment to others. Underscoring this commitment is my very real, practical sense of integrity and compassion. My personal values fuel my passion for continued learning and give meaning and purpose to my quest. In total, I feel I have a unique perspective for contributing to the academic environment of your program. Loyola University’s School of Social Work is highly ranked among the world’s most respected universities. It would be my privilege to become a candidate for its Master’s degree in Applied Social Psychology. The Applied Social Psychology program will provide an excellent academic curricula and internship for preparation and placement in the social services community that supports the needs of the elderly. My professional life has been primarily focused in the world of business. The transition to a focused academic life and resulting directional shift has at times been challenging – but also an overwhelmingly positive and invigorating experience. The senior management positions held have been focused on the development and nurturing of relationships - in client, internal staff and inter-organizational environments. The training and experience in this work has prepared me well for the profession I now embrace – the care and support of others – albeit in a different setting and with a different community. Working with older adults as they and their loved ones face challenges of aging is both an honor and privilege. - #17 Lifelong Learning I have been an advocate and enthusiastic participant in lifelong learning opportunities. The undertaking to finish my Bachelor’s Degree at age 58 is an example. I also completed an intensive senior management program through Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 2000 – 2001. Numerous professional seminars and personal growth workshops, continuing education classes and the dogged determination to complete my Bachelor’s Degree further attest to my commitment to lifelong learning. It is a dream – time, money and energy in support – for me to enter graduate school in pursuit of my Masters in Social Work. And I have discovered that through my requirements in the academic environment, I have a renewed enthusiasm for reading – academic, professional and personal. Lifelong learning provides the opportunity for discipline in time management – which comes with achievement through goal-setting and honoring deadlines. These are lessons well applied to life. I am grateful that I have maximized my options through the educational venues I have chosen throughout my adult life. If I were not a lifelong learner, I would most likely be in a job that provided little stimulation to the development of my true self. I credit my attitude and action in education for my choices and quality of life, and I pursued as many avenues as possible to determine my midlife career change. Aside from the benefit of lifelong learning to my work, I also believe it has been a significant contributor to my personal life. I am more informed, considerate and I believe I am a better citizen. Lifelong learning is a commitment – and one that I will continue to honor, and use as I embark on my next and future educational journeys.
