Assure Method Multiplying Polynomials
I. Analyze learners: My class consists of 25 9th
graders - 11 girls and14 boys. Of the students,
12 are white, 8 are African American, and 5 are Latin American. Additionally, 3 students
have been diagnosed with ADHD. The majority of my students have visual and auditory
learning styles. This will require instruction that incorporates plenty of verbal instruction,
auditory resources, opportunities for students to visualize, and visual aids.
II. State objectives: My students will simplify polynomial equations by practicing problems
created in class and on Khan Academy with 85 percent accuracy by the end of the unit.
III. Select methods, media, and materials: To incorporate different learning styles I will use the
following methods, media, and materials:
 Smartboard: students will identify the parts of the equation by labeling the equation
presented on the Smartboard.
 Youtube: Students will watch a video about how to multiply polynomials.
 Marker Board: Students will practice problems in a board racing activity.
 QR codes: Students will have access to QR codes that provide resources where they can
find extra practice problems or video instruction.
 Pinterest: Students will have access to my Pinterest board as a resource.
IV. Utilize media and materials: I will preview the Youtube video used in class. All technology
will be tested before class to make sure it works properly (this includes the Smartboard and
computers). Also, I will prepare a list of equations to be simplified to use for board races.
V. Require learner participation: As an introduction, I will ask students to share what they
know about polynomials and we will go over some vocabulary terms like degree, term,
variable, and coefficient. The class will then watch the video “Multiplying Polynomials.”
Questions will be taken afterwards, and I will demonstrate a few more example problems on
the board as the students guide me through the steps. Students will then be released to
practice a few problems on Khan Academy or Purple Math. Students will be required to
show their work and explain their process when asked of them as I walk around the
classroom. Finally, students will participate in board races where I will give an equation to
be simplified to two students. The first student finished will explain how he/she arrived at
his/her answer; if the student’s answer is incorrect we will look to the other student.
VI. Evaluate and revise: To evaluate my students I will have them participate in board races.
Two students will work the same problem on the board to completion, and whoever finishes
first will explain how they arrived at the answer. I will also check for achievement by
walking around the room during class to ask the students questions about the equations
they are solving to see if they know the proper vocabulary to describe the mathematical
process.
