Assure Method Solving Systems by Graphing
I. Analyze learners: My class consists of 25 9th
graders - 11 girls and14 boys. Of the students,
12 are white, 8 are African American, and 5 are Latin American. Additionally, 3 students
have been diagnosed with ADHD. The majority of my students have visual and auditory
learning styles. This will require instruction that incorporates plenty of verbal instruction,
auditory resources, opportunities for students to visualize, and visual aids.
II. State objectives: Students will solve systems of equations by graphing by completing a
webquest with 85 percent accuracy by the end of the unit.
III. Select methods, media, and materials: To incorporate different learning styles I will use the
following methods, media, and materials:
 Smartboard: Students will identify the different forms of linear equations displayed on
the Smartboard.
 Graph paper and ruler: Students will use graphing paper and rulers to draw the
intersections of systems of equations.
 Calculator: Students will use the calculators to graph more complex graphs and identify
at what point the lines intersect. The calculators can also be used to check other
graphs.
 Poster: I will present an application problem using a poster as a visual aid to the class.
 Webquest: Students will demonstrate their comprehension of solving systems of
equations by graphing through the completion of the activities described in the
webquest.
 QR codes: Students will have access to QR codes that provide resources where they can
find extra practice problems or video instruction.
IV. Utilize media and materials: I will preview the webquest used in class. All technology will
be tested before class to make sure it works properly (this includes the Smartboard and
computers). I will ensure the class calculators are functioning properly and that we have
adequate graph paper and rulers. Also, I will place the poster in an accessible are where the
students will be able to view it.
V. Require learner participation: As an introduction, I will ask students to identify the various
forms of linear equations. I will then give the class notes about the purpose for solving
equations and how to do by graphing. I will inquire of students how to construct the lines
by asking them where the x- and y-intercepts are and what the slope is. Students will then
practice drawing the graphs of systems of equations and identifying their point of
intersection. I will provide students with a real world example using the poster, and then
will ask the class if they know of other instances in which solving linear systems could be
used. Finally, students will complete a webquest and submit their finished projects to me.
VI. Evaluate and revise: To evaluate my students I will have them participate by drawing the
graphs in examples. I will also check for achievement by walking around the room while the
students are practicing graphing equations to see if they understand or need further
clarification. I will continue to ask students about the slope, intercepts, and point of
intersection to ensure they understand these terms. Lastly, students will complete the
webquest assigned, and I will check their work for details that demonstrate understanding
of solving systems of equations by graphing.
