What is Piety…
Piety is the state of being pious. According to Oxford Dictionary
meaning of ‘piety’ is “The quality of being religious”. In Islam piety is
the essence of character and character is the thing on which Islam
emphasizes the most. As only through character one can gain heights of
goodness and blessed in this world and hereafter.
Piety in Islam…
In Islam piety has been assigned the most important position and
the people who are pious are considered most distinguished and
respectable persons in Islam. The Holy Qur’an considers piety as the
main criteria for appraising the values of individuals. As it says:
“ Oh the noblestof you,in the sight of Allah is the best in conduct” (49:13)
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“There is a characteristic thatwhoever acquiresit will have the world and
Hereafter in his control. He wasasked: 'Oh Prophetof God!What is that
characteristic? The Prophet(S) replied: 'Piety!Whoever desires to become the
most dearestperson should become pious, and then he recited the following
verse:
And who so ever keepth his duty to God, He will appoint a way out for him. And
will providefor him from (a quarter) whence he hath no expectation. (65:2-3)”
Hazrat Ali (R.A) said:
“Piety acquiresthe most prominentposition in all ethical affairs”.
Generally piety is considered as negative of something like
avoidance of something. In our societies, the people who live
separately by leaving all the world and all of its joys apart are

considered pious. But that’s not true, our Islam rather directs us to live
a moderate life by taking this world and religion side by side.
Effect of Piety on Society…
Piety is not just avoiding and restraining ourselves from something it
also means to behave well in our societies. As this implies the teachings
we had while in the lap of our parents or from our religion. Islam
teaches us how to behave in all the situations as it is complete code of
conduct for anyone’s life. In Islam Allah Almighty warns us about the
rights of people more than His own rights. That’s the beauty of Islam,
according to which a person’s right towards someone else is more
important than the rights of Allah.
Conclusion:
One should pay attention on his behaviours while doing anything
towards anyone. As we all know piety is the vital sole of character so to
make ones character strong enough one should try his best to be pious
and humble as well.
