The Case of Claudia
Claudia is a 6-year-old, Hispanic female residing with her biological mother and father in an urban area. Claudia was born in the United States 6 months after her mother and father moved to the country from Nicaragua. There is currently no extended family living in the area, but Claudia’s parents have made friends in the neighborhood. Claudia’s family struggles economically and has also struggled to obtain legal residency in this country. Her father inconsistently finds work in manual labor, and her mother recently began working three nights a week at a nail salon. While Claudia is bilingual in Spanish and English, Spanish is the sole language spoken in her household. She is currently enrolled in a large public school, attending kindergarten. Claudia’s family lives in an impoverished urban neighborhood with a rising crime rate. After Claudia witnessed a mugging in her neighborhood, her mother reported that she became very anxious and “needy.” She cried frequently and refused to be in a room alone without a parent. Claudia made her parents lock the doors after returning home and would ask her parents to check the locks repeatedly. When walking in the neighborhood, Claudia would ask her parents if people passing are “bad” or if an approaching person is going to hurt them. Claudia had difficulty going to bed on nights when her mother worked, often crying when her mother left. Although she was frequently nervous, Claudia was comforted by her parents and has a good relationship with them. Claudia’s nervousness was exhibited throughout the school day as well. She asked her teachers to lock doors and spoke with staff and peers about potential intruders on a daily basis. Claudia’s mother, Paula, was initially hesitant to seek therapy services for her daughter due to the family’s undocumented status in the country. I met with Claudia’s mother and utilized the initial meeting to explain the nature of services offered at the agency, as well as the policies of confidentiality. Prior to the SOCIAL WORK CASE STUDIES: CONCENTRATION YEAR 14 meeting, I translated all relevant forms to Spanish to increase Paula’s comfort. Within several minutes of talking, Paula noticeably relaxed, openly sharing the family’s history and her concerns regarding Claudia’s “nervousness.” Goals set for Claudia included increasing Claudia’s ability to cope with anxiety and increasing her ability to maintain attention throughout her school day. Using child-centered and directed play therapy approaches, I began working with Claudia to explore her world. Claudia was intrigued by the sand tray in my office and selected a variety of figures, informing me that each figure was either “good” or “bad.” She would then construct scenes in the sand tray in which she would create protective barriers around the good figures, protecting them from the bad. I reflected upon this theme of good versus bad, and Claudia developed the abil.

Case study 1:
Brandy is a Caucasian girl, who just celebrated her sixth birthday, and is one of the youngest kids in her
first-grade class. Most of the school year has gone fairly well, but she lately has been having trouble at
school. Last week she disrupted class and threw her pencil across the room.
The teacher explained to the parents that she has been a bit “emotional” lately, but did not know why. Her
mom wondered if it was because she has recently transitioned from graduate school to a new job that
keeps her away from home a bit more than before.
Brandy generally likes school, but gets pulled out once or twice a week for special speech therapy as she
occasionally has some problems with a lisp. Her parents were hesitant about Brandy being pulled out of
class, but when she reported she was getting picked on at school by some classmates, they agreed to the
speech therapy.
At home, she has a supportive family and siblings (younger and older) with whom she gets along well.
Occasionally she will get into trouble for lying, but most often feels pretty badly about it once she is caught.
Her father also has a master’s degree with a full-time job, and she and her siblings attend an after-school
daycare program for a couple hours. She plays with the neighborhood kids and her siblings; however
sometimes Brandy has communication struggles with others due to her lisp. She loves sports, and just
finished playing soccer and is set to start t-ball within the next week or two.
Case study 2:
Brandon is an African-American eight-year-old child in third grade, who is in danger of having to repeat the
grade. He continues to struggle with being able to concentrate in class, and says he is “bored” when
students have to just sit and read; sometimes he talks and walks around the class and other times he draws
pictures and pays no attention at all. He frequently gets sent to the principal’s office for this behavior, but
does not seem to mind because the principal lets him play and gives him snacks (as he always complains
about being hungry). Often the principal compliments him on his artwork.
When his parents were told about his behavior, they were exasperated. The parents said he behaves even
more poorly at home, stealing and breaking his siblings’ things and sneaking food into his room. He even
has nightly bed-wetting accidents on a fairly regular basis (the doctor has ruled out physical problems as a
reason for these).
His mother works a part-time job at a local gas station when the kids are in school. His father used to come
home around dinnertime and was often tired; but he was recently laid off and is depressed and spends a lot
of time in bed.

Claudia’s family lives in an impoverished urban neighborhood with a rising crime rate. After Claudia witnessed a mugging in her neighborhood, her mother reported that she became very anxious and “needy.” She cried frequently and refused to be in a room alone without a parent. Claudia made her parents lock the doors after returning home and would ask her parents to check the locks repeatedly. When walking in the neighborhood, Claudia would ask her parents if people passing are “bad” or if an approaching person is going to hurt them. Claudia had difficulty going to bed on nights when her mother worked, often crying when her mother left. Although she was frequently nervous, Claudia was comforted by her parents and has a good relationship with them. Claudia’s nervousness was exhibited throughout the school day as well. She asked her teachers to lock doors and spoke with staff and peers about potential intruders on a daily basis. Claudia’s mother, Paula, was initially hesitant to seek therapy services for her daughter due to the family’s undocumented status in the country. I met with Claudia’s mother and utilized the initial meeting to explain the nature of services offered at the agency, as well as the policies of confidentiality. Prior to the SOCIAL WORK CASE STUDIES: CONCENTRATION YEAR 14 meeting, I translated all relevant forms to Spanish to increase Paula’s comfort. Within several minutes of talking, Paula noticeably relaxed, openly sharing the family’s history and her concerns regarding Claudia’s “nervousness.” Goals set for Claudia included increasing Claudia’s ability to cope with anxiety and increasing her ability to maintain attention throughout her school day. Using child-centered and directed play therapy approaches, I began working with Claudia to explore her world. Claudia was intrigued by the sand tray in my office and selected a variety of figures, informing me that each figure was either “good” or “bad.” She would then construct scenes in the sand tray in which she would create protective barriers around the good figures, protecting them from the bad. I reflected upon this theme of good versus bad, and Claudia developed the abil.

Case study 1:
Brandy is a Caucasian girl, who just celebrated her sixth birthday, and is one of the youngest kids in her
first-grade class. Most of the school year has gone fairly well, but she lately has been having trouble at
school. Last week she disrupted class and threw her pencil across the room.
The teacher explained to the parents that she has been a bit “emotional” lately, but did not know why. Her
mom wondered if it was because she has recently transitioned from graduate school to a new job that
keeps her away from home a bit more than before.
Brandy generally likes school, but gets pulled out once or twice a week for special speech therapy as she
occasionally has some problems with a lisp. Her parents were hesitant about Brandy being pulled out of
class, but when she reported she was getting picked on at school by some classmates, they agreed to the
speech therapy.
At home, she has a supportive family and siblings (younger and older) with whom she gets along well.
Occasionally she will get into trouble for lying, but most often feels pretty badly about it once she is caught.
Her father also has a master’s degree with a full-time job, and she and her siblings attend an after-school
daycare program for a couple hours. She plays with the neighborhood kids and her siblings; however
sometimes Brandy has communication struggles with others due to her lisp. She loves sports, and just
finished playing soccer and is set to start t-ball within the next week or two.
Case study 2:
Brandon is an African-American eight-year-old child in third grade, who is in danger of having to repeat the
grade. He continues to struggle with being able to concentrate in class, and says he is “bored” when
students have to just sit and read; sometimes he talks and walks around the class and other times he draws
pictures and pays no attention at all. He frequently gets sent to the principal’s office for this behavior, but
does not seem to mind because the principal lets him play and gives him snacks (as he always complains
about being hungry). Often the principal compliments him on his artwork.
When his parents were told about his behavior, they were exasperated. The parents said he behaves even
more poorly at home, stealing and breaking his siblings’ things and sneaking food into his room. He even
has nightly bed-wetting accidents on a fairly regular basis (the doctor has ruled out physical problems as a
reason for these).
His mother works a part-time job at a local gas station when the kids are in school. His father used to come
home around dinnertime and was often tired; but he was recently laid off and is depressed and spends a lot
of time in bed.

Transcending Differences in Placement

Essays Attachment Theory
John Bowlby developed the attachment theory after observing children separated from their parents during World War 2 developing emotional problems stemming from the separation. Bowlby himself experienced separation from his mother at a young age when sent to boarding school. His main theory was that strong attachments are formed through proximity maintenance, a secure base, and separation distress. He believed children need continuous care from their primary attachment figure, usually the mother, for the first two years to develop properly.
Social Self

Dalia is a 14-year-old, biracial female of African and Irish American descent who resides with her parents in a middle-class suburb. Dalia’s father works in the creative arts field with a nontraditional work schedule that has him gone overnight and sleeping late into the morning. Dalia’s mother is an executive who works long hours. Dalia was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in early childhood and was hospitalized multiple times. very poor eye contact in ways that were atypical for her culture, and she had a difficult time
staying on topic, frequently shifting the topic of conversation onto her interest in flower.
Donna’s intelligence was found to be in the upper limits of the average range on the Wechsler
Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V). The Gilliam Asperger's Disorder Scale
as rated by Donna and her mother together was in the clinically significant range, with her
largest deficits being reflected in her social interactions scale. There were also deficits noted in
pragmatic skills, restricted patterns of behavior, and cognitive patterns. Problems were also noted
with reciprocal social interaction skills, communication skills, and stereotyped behaviors,
interests, and activities.
Donna's QEEG results showed multiple abnormalities. Her right parietal-temporal lobe showed
excessively slow activity. This is an area important for facial recognition and empathy. She also
had excessive mid-line frontal hi-beta, something that is often seen in those with mental rigidity
and obsessive thinking. Multiple problems in coherence were noted, reflecting cognitive
inefficiency in her mental processing. Excessive connectivity was noted in the frontal lobes areas
and there were excessive disconnections between her frontal lobes and the central and back parts
of.

Each part of the United States has at least one ecological crisis based on location, biome, and industrialization pattern. For example, the Midwest was once a prairie with very fertile soil. However, when people realized that with the right watering and drainage system this area could become productive farmland, there arose ecological problems. The conversion of the prairie to farmland is the root cause of many ecological problems in this region.
Regardless of what biome you consider, humans have likely had an impact on the ecology of that area.
For this assignment, identify the biome in which you live. The following are a few examples of biomes:
Tropical rainforests: This biome has high average temperatures, high moisture levels, and high species diversity.
Prairies: The prairies have grassland-variable temperatures, variable moisture levels—depending on proximity to mountain ranges—and are mainly dominated by grasses and ungulate herbivores.
Deserts: These biomes have hotter average temperatures, low moisture, lower species diversity, and a composition of species limited mainly to those that are adapted to hot temperatures.
Temperate forests: The temperate forests have variable temperatures, high moisture levels, and higher species diversity.
Taigas: These biomes have colder average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and lower species diversity.
Tundras: The tundras have cold average temperatures, low moisture levels, and low species diversity.
Coral reefs: These biomes have high average temperatures and high species diversity.
Open oceans: These biomes have a wide range of temperatures and species diversity varies.
Chaparrals: The chaparrals have higher average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and are dominated mainly by grasses and shrubs.
Alpines: These biomes have low average temperatures, low precipitation, and receive high ultraviolet (UV) rays due to high elevation.

inappropriate times, for example, when she was talking about the teasing at school. She made
very poor eye contact in ways that were atypical for her culture, and she had a difficult time
staying on topic, frequently shifting the topic of conversation onto her interest in flower.
Donna’s intelligence was found to be in the upper limits of the average range on the Wechsler
Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V). The Gilliam Asperger's Disorder Scale
as rated by Donna and her mother together was in the clinically significant range, with her
largest deficits being reflected in her social interactions scale. There were also deficits noted in
pragmatic skills, restricted patterns of behavior, and cognitive patterns. Problems were also noted
with reciprocal social interaction skills, communication skills, and stereotyped behaviors,
interests, and activities.
Donna's QEEG results showed multiple abnormalities. Her right parietal-temporal lobe showed
excessively slow activity. This is an area important for facial recognition and empathy. She also
had excessive mid-line frontal hi-beta, something that is often seen in those with mental rigidity
and obsessive thinking. Multiple problems in coherence were noted, reflecting cognitive
inefficiency in her mental processing. Excessive connectivity was noted in the frontal lobes areas
and there were excessive disconnections between her frontal lobes and the central and back parts
of.

Each part of the United States has at least one ecological crisis based on location, biome, and industrialization pattern. For example, the Midwest was once a prairie with very fertile soil. However, when people realized that with the right watering and drainage system this area could become productive farmland, there arose ecological problems. The conversion of the prairie to farmland is the root cause of many ecological problems in this region.
Regardless of what biome you consider, humans have likely had an impact on the ecology of that area.
For this assignment, identify the biome in which you live. The following are a few examples of biomes:
Tropical rainforests: This biome has high average temperatures, high moisture levels, and high species diversity.
Prairies: The prairies have grassland-variable temperatures, variable moisture levels—depending on proximity to mountain ranges—and are mainly dominated by grasses and ungulate herbivores.
Deserts: These biomes have hotter average temperatures, low moisture, lower species diversity, and a composition of species limited mainly to those that are adapted to hot temperatures.

Chaparrals: The chaparrals have higher average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and are dominated mainly by grasses and shrubs.
Alpines: These biomes have low average temperatures, low precipitation, and receive high ultraviolet (UV) rays due to high elevation.

- 1. Assignment 1: Attachment Styles We have learned that attachment occurs due to safety needs, but what if these needs were not met? In this discussion, you will consider attachment styles and potential outcomes when conditions are not ideal for attachment, as well as the interaction between attachment styles and temperament. Kandi is an 11-year-old girl who has lived in Centervale with a foster family, the Jacksons, for one month. She has been in foster care most of her life, having been removed from her biological parents’ care at the age of 10 months. Kandi’s parents were addicted to drugs and alcohol and Kandi spent most of her infancy in her crib or playpen, alone in her room. It is likely that Kandi was exposed to drugs and alcohol in utero . It is unknown whether, in addition to neglect, she was abused sexually or physically. These are possibilities given her parents’ addictions and presence of multiple adults in her house at any given time. Since Kandi’s arrival, her foster parents have noted several behaviors that seem odd. Despite her sweet personality, Kandi loses her temper easily. She hugs people indiscriminately, while at the same time pushing others away. At times, Kandi avoids her foster mother or seems unconcerned with her not being in the room. At other times, she becomes very distraught and cries frantically when her foster mother goes to the laundry room. She has a difficult time interacting socially with the other children at Centervale Elementary and has only a few friends. At the same time, she clings to her teacher, constantly hugging her, and even trying to kiss her. Although she has been provided with toys, books, and games, Kandi collects odd things such as used staples or the rubber pieces left over from pencils. Based on your analysis of the scenario, respond to the following: How would you explain the various attachment styles proposed by John Bowlby?
- 2. Why is it important to understand attachment styles? What disruptions in attachment might be inferred from Kandi’s behavior? Given her early isolation and multiple caregivers, what are some important social development stages or aspects that Kandi may have missed? Discuss concepts such as imitation, social reciprocity, and exploration. How might Kandi’s temperament affect her development? What protective factors might help her?
