ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES FOR STUDENT PLACEMENT 2
Assessment strategies is very important in placing students in the least restrictive
environment for the best educational setting.
Describe formative assessment
Formative assessment is when information can be used be teachers, staff and
students in order to modify teaching and learning. It is a positive view and vision to
to improve motivation and student self confidence. It includes independent learning
and individualized lessons. It does have limitations such as it is time consuming and
takes a lot of preparation. It has low reliability and has medium long range effects.
Describe summative assessment
Summative assessment is using the traditional way of assessment using
tests, quizzes and multiple question tests. Summative assessment is assessing the
students knowledge based on how they do on testing and assignments.
What are some instructional strategies that can be used formatively?
Strategies that can be used formatively are the three quick questions
that is based on concepts that were learned over the last couple of days. Other
strategies are labs, homework and practice that are formative and are able to be
done in a short time. Direct instruction is a formative assessment. Formative
'
assessments include questions, pre-tests, homework, practice, worksheets and
labs. These are strategies that can use the information to modify the teaching
and learning. These strategies can help identify a child's disability and then
the proper placement for the child. These can determine what the child knows
and where the child should be placed. At my school children were placed in
either the ISP (Intensive Support Program) or the Neighborhood Program

which was the developmentally delayed students. We used these strategies plus the
Brigrance Inventory assessment for class placement. These strategies are also used
for IEP (Individual Education Plan) goals and objectives. These strategies help
in deciding what goals and objectives should be written into the IEP for the
student for the next year. Formative assessments are beneficial to the teachers,
staff, student and parents. They show the team where the child is in learning and
grade levels. This way all involved can know what the students' levels are at and
how to work with the students. These strategies help determine a students' least
restrictive environment. This is the setting where the child will get the best
education for them where they will be safe and learn at their level. This environment
can be a self contained special education class or a full inclusion class. It can be
any combination of special and regular education classes. It is whatever is the
best for the child where they are able to learn at their level. It does not have to
correspond with the birth age or grade level but at their developmentally age level.
In conclusion, both formative and summative assessments are important and
beneficial in a child's education. Both assessments give important information to
the teachers, staff, students, parents and therapists who work with the children. This
helps all who work with the children to know what they need to do for the students to
help them learn and grow.
