AS Media Preliminary Task
Evaluation
BY RAV SHARMA
My Role in the Group
 Everyone in our group was assigned to
different particular roles; allowing the
group to be fully complete. This would
later enable us to build up our teamwork
and other transferrable skills.
 With a group in total of four, all were given
a main role however this did not stop us
from aiding each other giving us
secondary roles. Doing so permitted us
learning a variety of techniques and
develop our media knowledge.
 My main role in the group was Co-
Director. It was my job to support the
director, make sure all the equipment's
were checked before filming, ensuring the
actors of their positions and lines and
making sure the mic did not enter the
shot.
 Although I did share roles with sound
management as I would listen for any
distorted sounds. I even was able to use
the mic whiling hold the fish pole. Thus
widening my roles.
Process of Planning through to Production
 The planning process started off with the team just throwing in random ideas to see where we could
possible head too. We looked at other preliminary tasks as research materials. Agreeing to keep it
simply we decided to go with the plot of drug exchange; giving it the title “Switch”. Our team did not
argue to much on the story as it was just the preliminary task.
 We created our storyboards, to outline what type of shots we may take. Together we evaluated the
storyboard to see if we were pleased. Although we did not particular went we all the camera shots; for
we experimented with the camera at the location to capture the best and most suitable shots. This was
during the production stage.
 Overall we had a steady planning process, however we could have improved the planning stage by
preparing more. As we waited later on in the production stage to try out different shots, we also did not
plan out the storyline as much as we should have for the actors script was not accurate and scheduling
a time to meet and film was not arranged professional.
Teamwork
 Our team consisted of only four members. This was beneficial for us as it made it easier to understand
each member. We were quick to realise that we had somewhat a similar thought for our filming ideas;
this certified us for being a highly compatible team.
 I personally enjoyed working with my team as we all got to input our ideas. Even if we were assigned to
one particular role; we weren’t as strict permitting as to aid other team members in their roles. This
made the task entertaining, enjoyable and interesting. I believe I have joined a great team.
 My only concern would be that if in later period of time my team does not work as well as before. I do
worry if for the main task my thoughts and ideas are not painted into the storyline or even concerned by
my group. Other concerns may include us not being on the same page leading into agreements. There
are a possibility for a good team to easily fall out; which is my main concern.
Camera Shots and Techniques
Match on Action
This is an editing technique for
continuity editing in which one shot
cuts to another shot portraying the
action of the subject in the first shot.
Thus creating the impression of
continuity. This shot was appropriate
to use for when are actress is walking
though the park to then later confront
her associate.
180* Angle
This is a filming guideline that
participants in a scene should have
the same left-right relationship to
each other, with filming only taking
place within the 180* angle. This shot
was chosen as it allowed the
audience to have a greater sense of
location in the scene in terms of what
may be off-screen in some shots; for
example in shot reverse shots.
Rule of Third
This is the concept in which the
frame is divided into three imaginary
sections. This creates reference
points which acts as a guide for
framing the shot/image. This was the
basics of all shots, as it has to be
applied. Our team used this shot to
create the perfect framing for each of
our shots. However there were many
times to which we disobeyed this
rule.
The Pros and Cons of our Video
The Strengths
 The strengths of our video would be our
large variety of camera shots and how
they merged together smoothly. Example
the rule of thirds, match on match and
180* rule etc.
 Other strength would be our beginning
scene; with the walk. As that scene runs
together efficiently.
 Our background music was also good as
it went well with the theme of the story but
also with the situation.
The Weakness
 One of the weakness would be that we could
have done more scenes to show more
development in the story. Also allowing to
powerfully run though.
 We were unfortunate to have had a mic
which gave us poor and uncertain sounds.
We were not able to capture most of the
conversation due to this error.
 Lastly we could have enhanced the planning
process further which would have enable us
to avoid a technical errors associated with
the production.
What Requires Further Development?
 Many elements of our video can go though further development to advance our finish piece. Luckily for
our team this was the preliminary task and were able to make some mistakes in order to learn and get
ready for our main task. The preliminary task gave us an opportunity to learn first hand the basics of
filming while recording and the importance of planning and preparing.
 Nevertheless I do believe that our team made the most of the errors during the preparation of the
video. As the cameras were not full examined before taking; for the lens required cleaning. The lines for
the actors was not scripted; therefore they had to improvise leading as to many mistakes and retakes.
And the mic was also not observed as there was no sound being recorded during filming.
 This can be improved for next time. We are now aware of the weakness of the production and therefore
can now avoid making these mistakes in the future.
