To know what is meant by continuity
           editing and

….To learn and apply some of the
    rules of continuity editing.

    To become familiar with the
       interface of Final Cut.
Preliminary Task
What is continuity?
Continuity in moving image means consistency.

Your aim is to make a film as easy to follow as
possible. So there are a set of rules you need to
follow to make a film seamless.

Continuity errors break the flow of your
film, confuse the viewer and break the realism.
Continuity editing is used to make your film run sequentially and be easy to view.

For example, if a character boards a train in shot 1.

Is then seen sitting reading a paper in shot two.

Then asleep with a paper in shot 3.

Then getting off the train in shot 4 an audience would not assume this was a really short
journey. They would just assume that nothing exciting happened in between the shots.

BUT, if a continuity rule was broken, for example if he moved seats this would
disrupt the flow of the action and would perhaps stop an audience from
‘believing’ in the film.
Rule 1.

The 180 degree rule.

Do not cross ‘the line of axis’ or
                       ‘line of vision.’

The 180 degree rule still applies here!
Rule 3 Match on Action

The shots all must match the energy of the previous shot otherwise there is a
sense of discontinuity.
Let’s make a film using:
180 degree rule.
Shot reverse shot
Match on action.
