180 Degree Rule Nicholas Taylor
What Is It? The 180 Degree rule is a cinematic rule which states that the camera, once it has filmed a scene from one side, should not film from the opposite side. An invisible axis across the subjects of the scene has been established in the first shot and cannot be switched. The Camera should not cut from one side of this line to the other In some cases the camera can cross the line if the transition is shown on the screen.
Why is it? Breaking the rule has the disruptive effect of confusing the viewer, making them stop and think. This means that they may break away from the film temporarily as they try to readjust. The reason that the the 180 rule is so important is that the break in the continuity and the disconcerting effect it can have on the viewer would upset the illusion of reality as the perspective is disrupted. Therefore it is important that the rule is adhered to in order to preserve the realism and believability of the film.
