This document examines the risks of driving different types of vehicles in the US over the past 40 years. Regression analyses found that while fatalities per mile have decreased overall, SUVs and pickups have remained constant, likely due to their increased popularity. SUVs and pickups pose greater risks of rollovers due to their higher centers of gravity. However, in multi-vehicle collisions, larger vehicles tend to protect occupants better due to their size and weight. The analyses show that while technology has made all vehicles safer over time, car occupants remain at lowest risk of fatality compared to SUVs and pickups.

As global IH/OH professionals, we are positioned to effectively contribute as exposure scientists not only to the occupational health of individuals but to their overall well-being. This education session will demonstrate how the United States Air Force is ushering in a bold solution to capture workplace, environmental, and lifestyle exposures to the individual using advances in science, technology, and informatics called Total Exposure Health (TEH). TEH provides a framework and tools to strengthen prevention and reduce illness and injury through effective early intervention, improved health-related risk assessment decision-making, and risk mitigation. Individual Exposure Health Risk Profiles (IEHRP) attempt to quantitatively evaluate individual health risks based on genetics, occupational, lifestyle, and environmental exposures, medical disposition, protective factors, etc. Participants will have a new view of population-based standards and will explore the potential future of individual occupational exposure standards.
IoT has become the driving force of all industries including Banking, Manufacturing, Insurance, Finance, Retail, Healthcare, Education, Smart Energy and more. Ranging from Smart Cities to Smart Homes Internet of Things facilitates it all. Here are the Top 100 IoT use cases across various industries & niches
These technologies are gradually reshaping the financial services industry:
- Artificial intelligence, deep learning, analytics, blockchain, and robotic process automation are emerging technologies applied in finance.
- Analytics has been a top technology trend for over a decade and is going through four stages from basic business intelligence to real-time streaming analytics.
- Blockchain uses distributed ledger technologies and consensus algorithms to securely record transactions in a decentralized manner, having applications for cryptocurrency, smart contracts, and identity management.
Data mining and analysis has been dominated by the big looking at the small. Businesses, institutions and governments examine our habits with an eye to commercial opportunities, welfare, and security. However, big data is migrating analysis into the arena of networking and association to enhance services: advertising, ‘pre-selling,’ healthcare, security and tax avoidance reduction. But this leaves the critical arena of Small Data unaddressed - the small looking at the small - individuals and things examining and exploiting their own data.
Here we consider a future of ubiquitous tagging, sensors, measuring and networked monitoring powered by the IoT. Key conclusions see many devices talking to each other at close range with little (or no) need of internet connection, and more network connections generated between things than those on the net.
Telecom customer services appear to be stuck in the early 20th Century with the telephone call the primary channel for service provision that can take days to affect. Compare that to Google, Amazon, IBM, Apple and other modern companies where customers control service provision by the minute or second.
Modem business is driven by the accumulation of customer data, but the Telecom Industry sees vast amounts of customer-related data dormant and untapped. As a result, many new opportunities are lost. For example, the behavior of people, devices, systems, and networks give the earliest indicators of potential security problems.
OTT operators exploit networks and make far greater profits than any other sector and this might be further amplified by the roll-out of 5G. But without a fundamental rethink of FTTP, 5G will fail to deliver sufficient coverage and the advertised data rates. This pending failure is already seeing alternative solutions from outside the industry along with the realization that most ‘things’ on the IoT will never connect to the internet!
Ambient Intelligence and Immersive Virtual Telepresence in Health CareRiva Giuseppe
The document discusses how emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and ambient intelligence can be used to improve healthcare and quality of life. VR and immersive virtual telepresence tools are outlined as potential "killer apps" for areas like rehabilitation, treatment of eating disorders and phobias, and medical education. However, barriers like costs, complexity, and lack of standards need to be addressed. The vision of "p-health" is proposed, which combines immersive VR technologies and ambient intelligence for shared e-therapy experiences.

This systematic review and meta-analysis compares the efficacy of propranolol versus corticosteroids in the treatment of infantile hemangiomas. The review identified 1162 studies, of which 56 met inclusion criteria. For corticosteroids, the meta-analysis included 26 studies and 2629 patients, finding a response rate of 69%. For propranolol, the meta-analysis included 25 studies and 795 patients, finding a response rate of 97%. The differences in response rates between the two treatments were statistically significant. Propranolol appears to be a more effective treatment for infantile hemangiomas with fewer side effects than corticosteroids. However, further randomized controlled trials are still needed.
The document summarizes the results of a survey comparing the perceptions of Canadian medical students interested in plastic surgery careers and current plastic surgery residents regarding driving forces behind their interest and essential competencies for matching into a plastic surgery program. Both groups cited variety, complexity and lifestyle as key drivers. However, students placed more emphasis on lifestyle than residents. Residents saw electives as more influential than students. The groups also differed in their views on traits like intellect and manual dexterity being essential for matching. The authors conclude students should obtain more elective experience to accurately understand the specialty and assist selection committees.
This document summarizes a study on using autologous fat grafting to correct contour deformities during breast reconstruction. The study included 124 patients who received fat grafting for 187 reconstructed breasts between 2008-2013. Fat was harvested from various donor sites and injected into the breasts. The average fat volume injected was 49.25 mL per breast. Complications occurred in 6 of the 187 breasts (3.2% rate) and were all in breasts previously treated with radiation. The study concludes that autologous fat grafting is a generally safe procedure for correcting contour issues following breast reconstruction, with a low complication rate.
1) A 24-year-old male boxer suffered a traumatic blow to his left forearm during a boxing match. Four weeks later, he presented with pain and swelling in his left wrist.
2) Examination and imaging revealed a complete rupture of the flexor carpi radialis tendon at its distal insertion as well as an osseous fragment attached to the torn tendon.
3) Due to the minimal functional impairment and the patient's profession as an athlete, conservative treatment involving aggressive physiotherapy was pursued rather than surgery. The patient was able to return to boxing two months later.
This document discusses a technique for meshing acellular dermal matrix (ADM) to decrease costs in implant-based breast reconstruction. Specifically:
- ADM such as AlloDerm is commonly used to provide lower pole coverage in breast reconstruction, but is expensive at $3,700 per sheet.
- The authors propose meshing AlloDerm using a technique similar to meshing skin grafts, which increases surface area and decreases needed material.
- Meshing a standard 6 cm x 17 cm AlloDerm sheet increased its area by 50% to 9 cm x 17 cm, allowing for estimated 50% cost savings per sheet.
- Early results found meshed Allo
This document discusses breast reconstruction using deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps after previous abdominal liposuction. It presents two case studies of successful DIEP flap reconstruction after liposuction and reviews 8 similar cases reported in literature. While liposuction was previously considered a contraindication for perforator flaps due to possible damage, these cases found that with preoperative imaging to evaluate perforators, DIEP flaps can be successfully used after liposuction with minimal complications. Larger studies are still needed but this suggests liposuction history may not absolutely preclude perforator flap reconstruction.
This document discusses how machine learning can be applied to help plastic surgeons better analyze and interpret the large amounts of patient data that are now routinely collected. It begins by explaining that traditional data analysis techniques struggle with "big data," which contains complex patterns. Machine learning, a subfield of artificial intelligence, can generate algorithms capable of acquiring knowledge from historical examples to help address this challenge. The document then provides examples of how machine learning has already been successfully applied in other fields and in cancer treatment. It proposes that plastic surgeons should also look to machine learning approaches to more efficiently deliver healthcare and improve surgical outcomes by extracting meaningful insights from their extensive patient data collections. Specific potential applications discussed include burn surgery, microsurgery, and various types of reconstruct

The paintings created a new illusion, transporting the viewer into a virtual reality, creating the perception of being physically present in the middle of the events. When standing in the middle of the 360 degree panorama this created the impression of standing in a new environment.[3]
1838 Charles Wheatstone’s research demonstrated that the brain processes the different two-dimensional images from each eye into a single object of three dimensions. Viewing two side by side stereoscopic images or photos through a stereoscope gave the user a sense of depth and immersion.

1930s a story by science fiction writer Stanley G. Weinbaum (Pygmalion’s Spectacles) contains the idea of a pair of goggles that let the wearer experience a fictional world through holographics, smell, taste and touch. In hindsight the experience Weinbaum describes for those wearing the goggles are uncannily like the modern and emerging experience of virtual reality, making him a true visionary of the field.
1950s cinematographer Morton Heilig developed the Sensorama (patented 1962) which was an arcade-style theatre cabinet that would stimulate all the senses, not just sight and sound. It featured stereo speakers, a stereoscopic 3D display, fans, smell generators and a vibrating chair. The Sensorama was intended to fully immerse the individual in the film. He also created six short films for his invention all of which he shot, produced and edited himself. The Sensorama films were titled, Motorcycle, Belly Dancer, Dune Buggy, helicopter, A date with Sabina and I’m a coca cola bottle!
1960 – The first VR Head Mounted Display
Morton Heilig’s next invention was the Telesphere Mask (patented 1960) and was the first example of a head-mounted display (HMD), albeit for the non-interactive film medium without any motion tracking. The headset provided stereoscopic 3D and wide vision with stereo sound.

With augmented reality, in contrast to virtual reality, surgeons can show patients their perspective or decision-process and provide patients an improved understanding of the surgical pathway (Figure 26). Both surgeon and patient could look at patient data or surgical steps together, helping put the patient at ease with a surgeon’s plan and thought process.

34 A complication and foreign body were added into the operating field, and the detection rates of surgeons with AR and those without any added mixed reality were measured. 34 Surgeons using AR were significantly more accurate, but were also significantly worse at detecting the unexpected events As mixed reality devices come to market, there must be a process to evaluate whether the technology will add true benefit to the patient, or will it simply enhance the surgical experience while increasing costs.35 For many procedures, the benefit of augmented or virtual reality may not be outweighed by the added cost of integrating these technologies into the clinical setting.
Is it unwise for us not to adopt and incorporate this technology into out practice. For enhancing our vision, augments your senses. The penalty we have is poorer outcmes and themissed chance to provide better care for our patients
