1. 1990: EURODANCE
Eurodance is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the early 1990s in
Europe. It combines many elements of techno, hi-NRG, house music and Euro disco.
This genre of music is heavily influenced by the use of rich melodic vocals, either
exclusively by itself or inclusively with rapped verses. This, combined with cutting-
edge synthesizer, strong bass rhythm and melodic hooks, establishes the core
foundation of Eurodance music.
Eurodance often carries a positive, upbeat attitude; the lyrics usually involve issues
of love and peace, dancing and partying, or expressing and overcoming difficult
emotions. The early to mid-1990s Eurodance vocals were frequently done by a solo
vocalist or a mixed rapper-vocalist duet.
From the early to mid-1990s, Eurodance was popular in Europe; the style received
extensive airplay on radio stations and television shows, resulting in many singles
appearing in the charts.
1992: DISNEYLAND PARIS
In 1992, Disney magic came to Europe with the opening of Euro Disney, a theme
park that would grow to become today's Disneyland Paris.
The entertainment resort is located in Marne-la-Vallée, a new town, 32 km east of the
center of Paris and is the most visited theme park in all of France and Europe.
2. The Walt Disney Company owns a majority stake. The resort covers19 km2
and
encompasses two theme parks, several resort hotels, a shopping, dining, and
entertainment complex and a golf course, in addition to several additional
recreational and entertainment venues.
1997: “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone” is published
“Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone” is the title of the first novel in the Harry
Potter series (seven books in total) first published in 26 June 1997 by Bloomsbury
Publishing.
The novel, written by the British author J.K. Rowling,
won most of the British book awards that were
judged by children and other awards in the US. The
book reached the top of the New York Times list of
best-selling fiction in August 1999 and stayed near
the top of that list for much of 1999 and 2000.
The Harry Potter series proved incredibly popular
with both children and adults worldwide. All the books
were best sellers, available in more than 200
countries and some 60 languages. The phenomenon
introduced new terms into the common lexicon. The
books were transformed into a blockbuster series of
eight films released over 10 years, which grossed
3. more than $7 billion worldwide. Together, the book and movie series spawned a
huge amount of related merchandise and in 2010 a theme park inspired by the
franchise opened in the United States.
2004: TORRE AGBAR
The Agbar tower, one of the symbols of contemporary Barcelona, was built in 2004
as an office building, by the Agbar water company. It was designed by the French
architect Jean Nouvel in association with the company b720 Arquitectos from
Barcelona. It is said that Nouvel was inspired by the organic forms of Gaudí’s
buildings in Barcelona and by the hills of the Montserrat. The building is often
compared to a geyser reaching the sky above Barcelona.
Depending on the incidence of light, the tower changes its colors - the colored
aluminium sheeting that reflects the light consists of 40 different colors of high gloss.
In front of this layer the wall is clad with thousands of glass louvres that serve as a
sunscreen and can be inclined at various angles to guarantee a maximum reflection
of solar energy. The space between the façade layers allows a natural circulation of
air in the building.
At this moment, the Torre Agbar is the highest building in Barcelona. Only the
Sagrada Familia will surmount it once the construction works are over - the building
regulations in Barcelona do not allow any other building to be taller than the Sagrada
Familia.
4. 2009: THE ACROPOLIS MUSEUM OPENED TO THE PUBLIC
On June 21st
, 2009, the new Acropolis Museum, one of the best archaeological
museums of the world and the most visited museum in Greece, opened to the public.
Designed by the architects Bernard Tschumi and Michael Photiadis, the New
Acropolis Museum was founded to exhibit all the significant finds from the Sacred
Rock and its foothills. It hosts its collections across three levels, as well as in the
archaeological excavation that lies at its foundations.
With 8,000 square meters of exhibition space and a full range of visitor amenities, the
Acropolis Museum tells the story of life on the Athenian Acropolis and its
surroundings by uniting collections formerly dispersed in multiple institutions,
including the small Acropolis Museum built in the 19th century.
Among the museum’s many treasures are artifacts from the Archaic, Classical and
Roman periods. All were found in the Parthenon, on the slopes of the Acropolis or in
other extant structures on the site. Notable works from the collection include the
original Caryatids, the relief of Nike Adjusting Her Sandal, and portions of the
Parthenon frieze. The museum also has hundreds of marble sculptures.
