Jess Glynne on her new album: 'I've never worked on something so hard
1. Jess Glynne on her new album:
“I’ve never worked on something so
hard.”
Last week we had the chance to sit down
with chart new-comer Jess Glynne to chat
about her brand new number 1 album ‘I
Cry When I Laugh’. The singer landed her
first number 1 single last summer with her
song ‘Rather Be’ with Clean Bandit (which
also won them their first Grammy), and
now she’s gone solo and her music is
doing better than ever.
The album was released on August 21st
and features 20 songs on the deluxe
edition and includes songs with Tinie
Tempah, Clean Bandit and Route 94. We
asked the popstar what her favourite thing
about creating this album was and she
replied “I really enjoyed just spending all
of my time at the studio doing what I love,
this job is really rewarding.” Every single
from the album so far has reached number
1 as well as the album itself getting to the
top of the charts.
Her song ‘Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself’ is
her most recent and 5th
number 1 single,
meaning she has tied with Cheryl
Fernandez-Versini for the most number-
one singles by a solo British female. The
25-year-old told us she has “never worked
on something so hard in her life.”
Glynne is very open with talking about
how a lot of the songs on her album were
inspired by her ex-girlfriend who she
admitted left her “heartbroken”. The video
to her song ‘Give Me Something’ features
members of the LGBT community,
including herself, presenting the lyrics to
the song. The singer felt it was “something
that had to be shared”.
Jess admitted that she felt she needed to
be as honest as she could be with this
album, her song ‘Why Me’ is a slow and
devastating track about a sad situation she
found herself in and includes very
personal lyrics. She told us “I like to
express myself with my music, and if it’s
personal then it’s personal, I don’t mind
sharing that”.
Although there are many songs based
around her break up, there are some
positive songs about the relationship such
as the single ‘Hold My Hand’. The popstar
thought it would be bad to present the
relationship as being “entirely negative”
when that is not how she sees it.
