The Art 1 course is an introductory creative studies class where students will learn techniques in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media using a variety of art materials. Students will evaluate past and present cultures for inspiration and build vocabulary through regular literacy activities. The goal is for students to develop critical thinking and appreciation for visual arts.

DESCRIPTION:
THE ART 1 COURSE IS AN INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE STUDIES. THROUGHOUT THIS COURSE YOU WILL
HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH A WIDE RANGE OF ART MATERIALS. YOU WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE
AND DEVELOP TECHNIQUES IN DRAWING, PAINTING, CERAMICS, SCULPTURE, AND MIXED MEDIA. WE WILL
EVALUATE IMAGES FROM PAST AND PRESENT CULTURES AND BE INSPIRED BY THE ART AROUND THE WORLD.
VOCABULARY BUILDING AND LITERACY STRATEGIES ARE INCORPORATED ON A REGULAR BASIS. AS A RESULT
OF THIS COURSE, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SPEAK CRITICALLY, AND GAIN A BETTER APPRECIATION FOR THE
VISUAL ARTS.
3. CLASS SUPPLIES:
• Materials you will need 2 pencils, an eraser and a sketchbook (provided)
YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BRING THESE DAILY
4. CLASS ENVIRONMENT
• Teacher’s workspaces
• Everything on our desk, behind desk and in cabinets are the property of
the teacher.
• Use of teacher supplies – prohibited
• Do not touch paper cutter!
CELL PHONE POLICY
• There will be NO phone usage in the classroom.
• I will play music when we are working… it’ll be awesome!
No earphones, let’s share music instead.
5. CLASS PROCEDURES
Entering the classroom:
• YOU NEED AN ID to get into this CLUB
• Read objective and agenda on the board
• Get sketchbook out to stamp
• You need to be in your seat before the bell rings!!
TARDINESS: You are tardy if you enter the room after the bell without a
pass.
You will lose 5 points on your bell sheet and receive a LATE
stamp.
6. BATHROOM PASSES/HALL PASSES
• Schedule your day to go to the bathroom during passing
periods.
• 4 potty passes a semester = 4% points
• 10/10 Policy – no one can be let out of classroom in first 10
minutes or last 10 minutes of class.
7. CLASS NEEDS TO COME
TO ATTENTION WHEN:
• The teacher calls for “eyes and ears” or “ears”
• Eyes and ears – stop working/talking and look and listen to
teacher
• Ears – continue working but listen to further instruction.
8. PENCIL SHARPENING AND SINKS
• Electronic sharpeners are available – please don’t sharpen if
someone is talking/teaching
• Manual sharpeners – colored pencils
• SINKS – you don’t need to ask to use sinks
• Drink out of sink…great water!
9. ABSENCES
• When absent – lose 10 points on bell
ringer sheet
• You need to be here to make art…try
not to be out. 1 or 2 absences won’t
hurt your grade. 10 absences will
• Ask other students what you missed
upon returning to class. If you’re
absent when homework is due, it’s
your responsibility to turn in the next
day.
10. DAILY PROCEDURES:
• You’re responsible for your artwork.
• Table leaders will help get projects, materials, etc. for the
table and will help put them away.
• Clean up – near the end of class, teacher will indicate when
it’s time to clean up. Entire studio space should be clean.
• Passes will not be given to those who clean up late.
• PICK UP – WIPE UP – THROW AWAY – RECYCLE
• THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO LINING UP AT DOOR!
11. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
• Follow directions of teacher
• Do not talk – LISTEN
• Move quickly and silently as instructed.
• There will be several drills – so we can practice
12. STUDENT GRADES
• Grading:
• 40% - Class participation, attendance, bell ringers
• 40% - Art Projects
• 20% - Homework, critique and assessment.
13. HOMEWORK AND PROJECT GRADING
• Sketchbook and homework assignments are due
each Thursday. The following week’s assignment
will be assigned on Friday.
• Late work will not be accepted.
• You will be given a bookmark with the semester’s
assignment.
• I grade them on Thursday during class (while you
are making art).
• We will decide on project due dates as a class.
You will be allowed to complete project
before/after school or during lunch if more time is
needed.
• Critique and artist statements follow each project.
14. KEEPING WORK (FOR EXHIBITIONS)
• YOUR work will be AWESOME!
• And I want to show it off
• I may display it in the hall
