Background
Liquids contain molecules that have different kinetic energies (due to different velocities). Some of the
faster liquid molecules have enough kinetic energy to vaporize. At the same time, some of the slower
vapor molecules condense into liquid. In an open container, the rate of vaporization will be greater than
the rate of condensation—hence, the liquid will eventually evaporate. In a sealed flask, however, there
will be a point in which equilibrium is reached between the rate of vaporization and the rate of
condensation. To the eye, it seems that the liquid doesn’t change at equilibrium. But at the microscopic
level a vapor molecule enters the liquid phase for every liquid molecule that enters the gas phase.
The total pressure in the sealed flask is due to the vaporized liquid plus air molecules present in the flask:
Ptotal = Pvapor + Pair (1)
In this experiment, you will investigate the relationship between
the vapor pressure of a liquid and its temperature. Pressure and
temperature data will be collected using a gas pressure sensor and
a temperature probe (Figure 1). Vapor pressures will be
determined by subtracting atmospheric pressure from the total
pressure.
The flask will be placed in water baths of different temperatures to
determine the effect of temperature on vapor pressure. You will
measure the vapor pressure of methanol and ethanol and
determine the enthalpy (heat) of vaporization for each liquid.
Objectives
In this experiment, you will
Investigate the relationship between the vapor pressure of a liquid and its temperature.
Compare the vapor pressure of two different liquids at the same temperature.
Use pressure‐temperature data and the Clausius‐Clapeyron equation to determine the heat of
vaporization for each liquid.
Caution!
The alcohols used in this experiment are flammable and poisonous. Avoid inhaling their vapors. Avoid
contacting them with your skin or clothing. Be sure there are no open flames in the lab during this
experiment. Notify your teacher immediately if an accident occurs.
Procedure
1. Wear goggles! You will work in pairs for this lab, but you may share water baths with your table.
2. Prepare four water baths: 20 to 25°C (use room temperature water), 30 to 35°C, 40 to 45°C, and 50 to
55°C. You should also have some hot water on a hot plate on reserve.
3. Obtain a temperature probe and gas pressure sensor. The sensor comes with a
rubber‐stopper assembly (Figure 2). The stopper has three holes, one of which
is closed. Make sure your tubing and valve are not inserted in the closed hole.
Insert the rubber‐stopper assembly into a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask.
Important: Twist the stopper into the neck of the flask to ensure a tight
fit.

Background

Negligence is a common liability associated with tort cases against security practitioners. Whether it is a failure to perform a duty, lack of training or improper level of background screening, negligence liability is one of the biggest problems facing private security.
Some of the cases and material available through online research date back over twenty years but their relevance in today’s scenarios is very much as real now as it was then.
Negligence can also lead to other torts representing serious potential financial losses. An improperly trained security officer runs a high risk of executing a false arrest or unwarranted search of an individual (Moore, 1988).
The class text and related Internet research can point towards a number of cases in which the plaintiffs have prevailed resulting in excessive fines and awards due to bad security practice.
The challenge that typically faces most security companies is that of the cost associated with the training of personnel. Many security contracts have very close profit margins right near actual cost many times. These tight margins prohibit training from a financial perspective.
However, the cost of not providing training can permanently ruin and destroy a business. Even if security companies provide state-mandated training, if required at all, many times the training is minimal and inadequate averaging 8 to 16 hours total (Button, 2007).
Meeting a state’s requirements may satisfy requirements for licensing but may not be enough to keep one out of civil tort for negligence. According to Pastor (2007), if a causal connection between a recognized harm and an insufficient level of training and supervision a negligence case may be proven.
Adequate supervision ties in with training in the respect that ensuring employees are properly prepared to carry out their duties. Recurring and remedial training are seen as components of effective training. Court cases revolving around negligent hiring practices are commonplace and numerous.
A common premise of many negligent hiring cases is:

The employer knew or should have known that the employee had a particular unfitness for the position so as to create a danger of harm to third persons;
•
The particular unfitness was known or should have been known at the time of the employee’s hiring or retention; and this particular unfitness proximately caused the plaintiff’s injury (Pastor, 2007)

University of the Southeast 25 was (and still is) one of the largest universities in the United States. It had been growing rapidly; that growth was spurred, in part, by information technology. The university embraced lecture capture technologies that allowed lectures to be streamed to students in a classroom, in dorm rooms, on the grass near the main campus central fountain, and at a variety of other places of the students’ choosing whenever they chose to watch. This made it possible to have sections of classes with over 1,000 students without having to build physical classrooms with enough seats to accommodate each person enrolled. It also made it possible to offer classes that were streamed to students at remote campuses. Each student was charged a technology fee (i.e., $5.16 for undergraduates and $13.85 for graduates per credit hour each semester), which was administered by the Information Technologies and Resources (IT&R) Office to help fund the costs of providing IT to students and faculty.IT&R was responsible for providing computer services, technologies, and telecommunications across the campus (Computer Services and Technology), helping faculty with their instructional delivery and multimedia support (Office of Instructional Resources), helping faculty develop and deliver Web‐based and lecture capture courses (Center for Distributed Learning), and the library. The IT&R Office developed IT‐related policies with very little input from the faculty and was responsible for deciding and implementing decisions concerning IT architecture and infrastructure. IT&R worked with the university president and other top administrators in making IT investment decisions. IT&R staff also worked with the various colleges, administrative offices, and an advisory board in making decisions about applications that needed to be developed. However, faculty were not consulted at all when the lecture capture system was selected. As was often the case at large universities, many decision rights on a wide range of issues had been allocated to the colleges.
The College of Business Administration had its own server and Technology Support Department (TSD). A recent survey of faculty and staff in the college indicated a high level of satisfaction with the TSD but far less satisfaction with the services provided by the university‐level IT&R. Some college respondents indicated their displeasure about IT&R’ s support of the technology for the lecture capture courses, help desk, and classroom technologies. The problems with the technology support for lecture capture software were particularly troublesome. The software would not authenticate students who had paid to enroll in some lecture capture courses, making it impossible for them to download the lectures even though they were registered in the course. Further, some university‐affiliated housing did not have adequate network bandwidth to allow students .

These people gather together in what seems to be a decent house. some of them are having a discussion meanwhile others are playing cards. One of the ladies playing seems to be playing unfairly. There is actually a card on the floor. We are able to see the back of the house where two other persons are conversing.There is a dog relaxing on the floor. Dogs have always been our companion. What stand out to me is the facial expression of the lady holding a card. We can tell that she is winning the game.

Jan Steen uses space in a very fine way. The painting is well defined without being crowded. From the ace card to the detailed table cloth,and the woman dress' material, Jan Steen seems to be good in organizing his space.. He used a two-point perspective, with the main room in front and access to the back room trough the corridor. the artist uses the light and color to focus the viewer attention on some main actions. The lady holding the card is paint with bright colors and her face is well highlight. The two persons in the back of the painting are also highlight. The other persons on the left conner are paint in darker colors, as if they were missing out on main actions.

“Mrs. Walsh, a woman in her 70s, was in critical condition after repeat coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Her family lived nearby when Mrs. Walsh had her first CABG surgery. They had moved out of town but returned to our institution, where the first surgery had been performed successfully. Mrs. Walsh remained critically ill and unstable for several weeks before her death. One of the helpful things the nurse did to assist this family was to establish a consistent group of nurses to work with Mrs. Walsh, so that family members could establish trust and feel more confident about the care their mother was receiving. The nurse related that this was a family whose members were affluent, educated, and well informed, and that they came in prepared with lists of questions. A consistent group of nurses who were familiar with Mrs. Walsh’s particular situation helped both family members and nurses to be more satisfied and less anxious. The family developed a close relationship with the three nurses who consistently cared for Mrs. Walsh and shared with them details about Mrs. Walsh and her life.
The nurse related that there was a tradition in this particular critical care unit not to involve family members in care. She broke that tradition when she responded to the son’s and the daughter’s helpless feelings by teaching them some simple things that they could do for their mother. They learned to give some basic care, such as bathing her. The nurse acknowledged that involving family members in direct patient care with a critically ill patient is complex and requires knowledge and sensitivity. She believes that a developmental process is involved when nurses learn to work with families.

Negligence is a common liability associated with tort cases against security practitioners. Whether it is a failure to perform a duty, lack of training or improper level of background screening, negligence liability is one of the biggest problems facing private security.
Some of the cases and material available through online research date back over twenty years but their relevance in today’s scenarios is very much as real now as it was then.
Negligence can also lead to other torts representing serious potential financial losses. An improperly trained security officer runs a high risk of executing a false arrest or unwarranted search of an individual (Moore, 1988).
The class text and related Internet research can point towards a number of cases in which the plaintiffs have prevailed resulting in excessive fines and awards due to bad security practice.
The challenge that typically faces most security companies is that of the cost associated with the training of personnel. Many security contracts have very close profit margins right near actual cost many times. These tight margins prohibit training from a financial perspective.
However, the cost of not providing training can permanently ruin and destroy a business. Even if security companies provide state-mandated training, if required at all, many times the training is minimal and inadequate averaging 8 to 16 hours total (Button, 2007).
Meeting a state’s requirements may satisfy requirements for licensing but may not be enough to keep one out of civil tort for negligence. According to Pastor (2007), if a causal connection between a recognized harm and an insufficient level of training and supervision a negligence case may be proven.
Adequate supervision ties in with training in the respect that ensuring employees are properly prepared to carry out their duties. Recurring and remedial training are seen as components of effective training. Court cases revolving around negligent hiring practices are commonplace and numerous.
A common premise of many negligent hiring cases is:

The employer knew or should have known that the employee had a particular unfitness for the position so as to create a danger of harm to third persons;

The particular unfitness was known or should have been known at the time of the employee’s hiring or retention; and this particular unfitness proximately caused the plaintiff’s injury (Pastor, 2007)

University of the Southeast 25 was (and still is) one of the largest universities in the United States. It had been growing rapidly; that growth was spurred, in part, by information technology. The university embraced lecture capture technologies that allowed lectures to be streamed to students in a classroom, in dorm rooms, on the grass near the main campus central fountain, and at a variety of other places of the students’ choosing whenever they chose to watch. This made it possible to have sections of classes with over 1,000 students without having to build physical classrooms with enough seats to accommodate each person enrolled. It also made it possible to offer classes that were streamed to students at remote campuses. Each student was charged a technology fee (i.e., $5.16 for undergraduates and $13.85 for graduates per credit hour each semester), which was administered by the Information Technologies and Resources (IT&R) Office to help fund the costs of providing IT to students and faculty.IT&R was responsible for providing computer services, technologies, and telecommunications across the campus (Computer Services and Technology), helping faculty with their instructional delivery and multimedia support (Office of Instructional Resources), helping faculty develop and deliver Web‐based and lecture capture courses (Center for Distributed Learning), and the library. The IT&R Office developed IT‐related policies with very little input from the faculty and was responsible for deciding and implementing decisions concerning IT architecture and infrastructure. IT&R worked with the university president and other top administrators in making IT investment decisions. IT&R staff also worked with the various colleges, administrative offices, and an advisory board in making decisions about applications that needed to be developed. However, faculty were not consulted at all when the lecture capture system was selected. As was often the case at large universities, many decision rights on a wide range of issues had been allocated to the colleges.
The College of Business Administration had its own server and Technology Support Department (TSD). A recent survey of faculty and staff in the college indicated a high level of satisfaction with the TSD but far less satisfaction with the services provided by the university‐level IT&R. Some college respondents indicated their displeasure about IT&R’ s support of the technology for the lecture capture courses, help desk, and classroom technologies. The problems with the technology support for lecture capture software were particularly troublesome. The software would not authenticate students who had paid to enroll in some lecture capture courses, making it impossible for them to download the lectures even though they were registered in the course. Further, some university‐affiliated housing did not have adequate network bandwidth to allow students .

These people gather together in what seems to be a decent house. some of them are having a discussion meanwhile others are playing cards. One of the ladies playing seems to be playing unfairly. There is actually a card on the floor. We are able to see the back of the house where two other persons are conversing.There is a dog relaxing on the floor. Dogs have always been our companion. What stand out to me is the facial expression of the lady holding a card. We can tell that she is winning the game.
4-How does the artist use space? Which perspective? How does he employ color and light?
Jan Steen uses space in a very fine way. The painting is well defined without being crowded. From the ace card to the detailed table cloth,and the woman dress' material, Jan Steen seems to be good in organizing his space.. He used a two-point perspective, with the main room in front and access to the back room trough the corridor. the artist uses the light and color to focus the viewer attention on some main actions. The lady holding the card is paint with bright colors and her face is well highlight. The two persons in the back of the painting are also highlight. The other persons on the left conner are paint in darker colors, as if they were missing out on main actions.

“Mrs. Walsh, a woman in her 70s, was in critical condition after repeat coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Her family lived nearby when Mrs. Walsh had her first CABG surgery. They had moved out of town but returned to our institution, where the first surgery had been performed successfully. Mrs. Walsh remained critically ill and unstable for several weeks before her death. Her family was very anxious because of Mrs. Walsh’s unstable and deteriorating condition, and a family member was always with her 24 hours a day for the first few weeks.
The nurse became involved with this family while Mrs. Walsh was still in surgery, because family members were very anxious that the procedure was taking longer than it had the first time and made repeated calls to the critical care unit to ask about the patient. The nurse met with the family and offered to go into the operating room to talk with the cardiac surgeon to better inform the family of their mother’s status.
One of the helpful things the nurse did to assist this family was to establish a consistent group of nurses to work with Mrs. Walsh, so that family members could establish trust and feel more confident about the care their mother was receiving. This eventually enabled family members to leave the hospital for intervals to get some rest. The nurse related that this was a family whose members were affluent, educated, and well informed, and that they came in prepared with lists of questions. A consistent group of nurses who were familiar with Mrs. Walsh’s particular situation helped both family members and nurses to be more satisfied and less anxious. The family developed a close relationship with the three nurses who consistently cared for Mrs. Walsh and shared with them details about Mrs. Walsh and her life.
The nurse related that there was a tradition in this particular critical care unit not to involve family members in care. She broke that tradition when she responded to the son’s and the daughter’s helpless feelings by teaching them some simple things that they could do for their mother. They learned to give some basic care, such as bathing her. The nurse acknowledged that involving family members in direct patient care with a critically ill patient is complex and requires knowledge and sensitivity. She believes that a developmental process is involved when nurses learn to work with families.
She noted that after a nurse has lots of experience and feels very comfortable with highly technical skills, it becomes okay for family members to be in the room when care is provided. She pointed out that direct observation by anxious family members can be disconcerting to those who are insecure with their skills when family members ask things like, “Why are you doing this? Nurse ‘So and So’ does it differently.” She commented that nurses learn to be flexible and .

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
