This document provides information on six artworks including photographs, sculptures, and videos by various artists such as William Wegman, Issa Bangura, El Anatusi, and Kara Walker. The works range in medium from Polaroid photos and iPhone images to sculptures made of materials like aluminum printing plates, copper wire, and recycled cardboard paper. Years of creation for the works span from 1993 to 2014.
William Wegman is an artist who’s interests in areas beyond painting led him to photography. He uses a polaroid 20-by-24-inch camera in his works and is most famously known for his photos of his dog Man Ray. The reason I choose this photo is because it is different, in Wegman’s photos and videos he portrays his dog doing humanly things. In this photo “Miss Mit” Wegman dog is fully dressed in a dress in the kitchen with mittens on. It seems like the dog has an arm which I think is what Wegman does best in his photographs, giving a dog humanly features.
I decided to take a picture of my friend dogs, Ali and Baxter. Ali the dog to the left is wearing his cape and facing backward whiles looking forward. He has an expression on his face that looks as if he’s sad and doesn’t want to wear his cape. One can almost feel Ali’s feelings towards dressing up which I think is what similar to Wegman’s work.
El Anatusi is an artist who work tends to breaks sculpture’s traditional adherence to forms of fixed shape while visually referencing the history of abstraction in African and European art. In this work done by Anatusi called ‘Wastepaper Bag’ he uses aluminum printing plates and copper wire to make what seems like a bag made out of recyclable materials.
I chose to make a cardboard sculpture. I cut cardboard paper and glued it together to make an irregular shape. The reason why I chose to do this is because of the way I viewed Anatusi’s work which is works of irregular forms.
Kara Walker is an artist best known for her raw intersection of race, gender, and sexuality through her iconic, silhouetted figures. She is able to express herself through animations and cartoon characters.
In this work I tried to create a lady cartoon like character. In the drawing the lady is kneeling down with a bag on a stick hanging over her shoulder. There are also footprints that make it seem as if she is retracing her steps.
