are coming to Chemistry
Education
Ari Myllyviita, MSc (chemistry education), MBa (social pedagogy)
Lecturer, chemistry and mathematics,
Viikki Teacher Training School of University of Helsinki
Teacher educator, Book Writer
3. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and
computational thinking approaches into the teaching
and learning of chemistry. This involves:
1. AI in Chemistry Education: Utilizing AI tools and methods to
enhance the learning experience in chemistry. This can include the
use of machine learning algorithms for personalized learning, AI-
driven simulations and virtual labs, and intelligent tutoring
systems that adapt to individual student needs.
2.Computational Thinking: Encouraging students to solve
problems in chemistry using computational methods. This
involves teaching students to think algorithmically, to model and
simulate chemical processes, and to analyze large datasets.
Computational thinking in chemistry education can help students
understand complex concepts through computational models and
data analysis.
3.Enhancing Research and Experimentation: AI and computational
thinking can significantly enhance research capabilities in
chemistry by enabling more efficient data analysis, predictive
modeling, and simulation of chemical reactions, which can be
particularly beneficial in experimental design and hypothesis testing.

4. ChatGPT and chemistry
education
ChatGPT is excellent AI-tool for teachers. ChatGPT and the other tool
based on ChatGPT are helping teachers to prepare their lessons (even
better), giving opportunity to browse necessary and important
information and data in no time (saving time).
Teacher´s task is to learn how to use ChatGPT in reasonable way and
with fitting keywords and questions. Teacher´s should know the right
concepts and the way how to ask questions which are formulated in a
good way.
ChatGPT is not just new Wikipedia, it can help you to find a right way to
teach difficult concepts and theories.
Combing AI, CT (computational thinking), and scientific practises we´ll find
crucial tools to develop chemistry education in high school level.

6. Shute (2017) has defined six facets within the
Computational Thinking concept.
1. decomposition; the whole consists of parts
2. summarizing information, collecting and
analyzing information, finding consistencies
(patterns) and modeling;
3. algorithmic thinking, design of algorithms;
4. debugging;
5. iteration and
6. generalization
