This document discusses the benefits of hypothermia, or lowered body temperature, including reduced oxygen demands, inflammation, pain sensation, and free radical production. It enables hibernation in animals through significant drops in body temperature down to -100 degrees Celsius in some species. Therapeutic hypothermia in humans after cardiac arrest has led to a three-fold increase in survival rates by decreasing cerebral oxygen demand by 6-8% for every degree Celsius cooler. Still, the mechanisms of how hypothermia provides these benefits are not fully understood.
This document discusses hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and its current state and future opportunities. HSCT is an effective treatment for hematologic, immune, metabolic and cancerous diseases. It replaces defective cells and offers high-dose therapy and graft-versus-tumor effects. While HSCT faces challenges like toxicity and costs, advances in unrelated donor matching, cord blood use, and reduced intensity regimens have expanded its applications. Standards and accreditation are needed to ensure quality, and further growth depends on expanded donor availability and combining HSCT with new cellular immunotherapies.

This document summarizes a study examining differences in prostate cancer mortality and primary treatment between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men in New South Wales, Australia. The study found that Aboriginal men were 49% more likely to die of prostate cancer within 5 years of diagnosis compared to non-Aboriginal men, even after adjusting for demographic factors, stage at diagnosis, health access and comorbidities. Aboriginal men were also less likely to receive curative surgery (prostatectomy) for localised or regional prostate cancer. A medical record review of 87 Aboriginal men provided more detailed information on staging and treatment, finding that of those diagnosed with localised disease, 38% had a prostatectomy and radiotherapy, 29% had radiotherapy only, and

The document summarizes literature on using data mining classification techniques to predict kidney disease. It first provides background on data mining and kidney disease, describing common risk factors, symptoms, and types of kidney diseases. It then reviews several studies that have applied techniques like decision trees, artificial neural networks, naive Bayes, support vector machines, and logistic regression to kidney disease data with promising results in predicting disease and survival rates. Overall, the literature suggests data mining methods show high potential for successful kidney disease prediction.
The Big Picture for Mechanisms of Resistance in Prostate Cancer GUMRC
This document summarizes a presentation on mechanisms of resistance in advanced prostate cancer. It discusses two key factors - whether the tumor needs androgens to grow, and whether the tumor can access androgens despite castration therapy. It notes that the HSD3B1 gene determines a patient's ability to produce androgens from the adrenals, and that both tumor-intrinsic and patient-dependent factors should be considered for optimal treatment selection and trials with curative intent. The talk concludes that understanding these separable issues can help move the field towards more effective and personalized treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
Hypokalemia in Emergency Medicine is an article that discusses potassium levels in the body and defines hypokalemia as a potassium level below 3.5 mEq/L. It notes that nearly 98% of the body's potassium is intracellular and plays an important role in cellular membrane potential. Hypokalemia can result from renal or GI losses, inadequate diet, medications, or a transcellular shift of potassium into cells. As many as 20% of hospitalized patients and 14% of outpatients undergoing testing may have mild hypokalemia, though it is clinically significant in only 4-5% of cases. Approximately 80% of patients on diuretics become hypokalemic.
1) High levels of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) were associated with an increased risk of acute kidney injury in patients undergoing coronary angiography, cardiac surgery, and in critically ill patients.
2) Experiments in mice overexpressing suPAR and in human kidney cells exposed to suPAR showed that suPAR impairs kidney function and increases oxidative stress.
3) Blocking the urokinase plasminogen activator receptor with a monoclonal antibody prevented kidney injury in mice overexpressing suPAR and normalized cell function, suggesting suPAR contributes to acute kidney injury and its receptor is a potential therapeutic target.

Stem cell therapy was examined for early stage avascular necrosis of the femoral head in pre-clinical and clinical studies:
- Pre-clinical studies using animal models found stem cell therapy improved bone formation and angiogenesis compared to core decompression alone, based on histological and imaging analyses.
- Clinical studies including randomized controlled trials and case series found stem cell therapy improved patient reported outcomes compared to core decompression alone, but did not significantly impact time to hip replacement. However, studies had inconsistencies in stem cell dose and disease severity assessed.
- Routine use of stem cell therapy will require further research optimizing dose and quality of treatment, as well as confirming delays in hip replacement.

Mercurius is named after the roman god mercurius, the god of trade and science. The planet mercurius is named after the same god. Mercurius is sometimes called hydrargyrum, means ‘watery silver’. Its shine and colour are very similar to silver, but mercury is a fluid at room temperatures. The name quick silver is a translation of hydrargyrum, where the word quick describes its tendency to scatter away in all directions.
The droplets have a tendency to conglomerate to one big mass, but on being shaken they fall apart into countless little droplets again. It is used to ignite explosives, like mercury fulminate, the explosive character is one of its general themes.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Renal replacement therapy (RRT) for acute renal failure (ARF) may be provided in many
settings within the hospital. Such patients require a high level of care and often have a poor
prognosis. No prospective studies have accurately defined this population, making the prediction
of necessary resources and the planning of services difficult.
AIM:
3. To ascertain the incidence, causes and outcomes of acute renal failure requiring renal
replacement therapy in Scotland.
DESIGN:
A prospective observational census of all clinical areas providing renal replacement therapy in
three Scottish health boards (Grampian, Highland, Tayside).
METHODS:
Patients were identified by liaison with each unit providing RRT. Factors precipitating renal
failure and reasons for RRT were recorded at the time of initiation. Comorbid disease burden
was scored using the Charlson index. Patient status at 90 days was assessed from case-notes,
contacting general practitioners where necessary.
RESULTS:
375 patients per million population per year received RRT; 203 per million per year for either
ARF or acute-on-chronic renal failure. 73.5% of patients receiving RRT for ARF died within 90
days, 23.5% became independent of RRT. The median duration of hospital admission was 19
days.
DISCUSSION:
The annual incidence of ARF requiring RRT is just over 200 per million population, almost
twice that of end-stage renal disease requiring RRT. Such treatment places high demands upon
health care resources.
