Archivematica is an open-source digital preservation system that normalizes, sanitizes, and packages digital content for long-term preservation. It was first developed in 2007 and is based on standards like BagIt, PREMIS, and METS. Archivematica helps ensure authenticity through the use of checksums, metadata, and unique identifiers in its METS files. While it can't alone ensure digital preservation for the necessary time period, it creates format-agnostic packages that can be stored and migrated between systems. Archivematica is one part of a digital preservation system and must be combined with storage, access, and other tools to fully meet criteria for a trusted digital repository according to ISO 16363.

These slides are the basis of an Open Repositories 2015 talk about Archivematica integration.
Abstract: The open repository ecosystem consists of many interlocking systems which satisfy needs at different points in content management workflows, and these differ within and among institutions. Archivematica is a digital preservation system which aims to integrate with existing repository, storage and access systems in order to leverage the resources that institutions have invested towards building their repository over time. The presentation will cover every integration the Archivematica project has completed thus far, including Dspace and DuraCloud, LOCKSS, Islandora/Fedora, Archivists' Toolkit, AccessToMemory (AtoM), CONTENTdm, Arkivum, HP Trim, and OpenStack, as well as ongoing projects with ArchivesSpace, Dataverse, and BitCurator. Each of these projects has had its own set of limitations in scope because of the requirements of the project sponsor and/or the limitations of other system, so in many ways several of them are not, and may never be 'complete' integrations. The discussion will explore what that means and strategies for expanding the functional capabilities of integration work over time. It will address scoping integration workflows and building requirements with limitations on functionality and resources. We will examine how systems can be built and enhanced in ways that accommodate diverse workflows and varied interlocking endpoints.

Message to White House to take Cyber Security seriously - from MITDavid Sweigert

Dave Sweigert
In light of increasingly apparent, potentially catastrophic online threats to national security, experts from around the country and globe are emphasizing the government's need to act, and invest, accordingly.
This week, cross-disciplinary leaders in security research have come forward to urge the Trump administration to start fortifying U.S. cybersecurity before it's too late, starting with our key infrastructure. In a collaborative report by MIT’s Internet Policy Research Initiative at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) with the Center for International Studies, experts outlined a variety of steps and considerations for helping protect Americans on the digital front, where the cost of attacks has been soaring [PDF].
Based in part on a series of industry-led workshops exploring the concerns of various large U.S. firms, the report warns government that skimping on investment and innovation in cybersecurity for American infrastructure could be very costly business soon. “The nation will require a coordinated, multi-year effort to address deep strategic weaknesses in the architecture of critical systems, in how those systems are operated, and in the devices that connect to them,” the authors commented in in a press release. “But we must begin now. Our goal is action, both immediate and long-term.”

UBC Library's Digital Preservation StrategyUBC Library
Presented by Bronwen Sprout & Sarah Romkey, UBC Library.
In early 2011, UBC Library began work on creating a digital preservation strategy in collaboration with Vancouver-based Artefactual Systems. Based on the results of a number of pilot projects, the strategy developed for UBC Library consists of using the open-source Archivematica digital preservation system to provide preservation functionality for the Library’s digitized and born-digital holdings. In addition, the strategy identifies the software requirements, existing and new system components, staffing and business processes that can be implemented to establish operational digital preservation systems and processes. They will discuss the strategy generally and cover three areas of implementation in greater detail: UBC Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections, cIRcle, a DSpace-based institutional repository, and CONTENTdm, UBC Library’s access system for digitized objects.

The Oxford Common File Layout (OCFL) is an emerging data standard that describes an application-independent approach to the storage of digital information in a structured, transparent and predictable manner. With the most recent release, v1.1, OCFL implementations are becoming increasingly popular within institutions looking for long-term preservation solutions that are robust against corruption, offer storage diversity and are easily transportable between storage vendors, thus protecting their content into the foreseeable future.
In this presentation we will discuss the specific design goals and methodologies involved in developing and maintaining the OCFL specification as well as explore different ways institutions are implementing OCFL as part of their digital preservation programs. Implementers will speak about their use case requirements for their individual institutions and reasoning behind selecting OCFL as well as discuss their desired outcomes.

The talk examines the question of the Capacity Gap - why is it that we have so many tools, services, standards, models, and metrics to support digital preservation, but so many organizations feel they do not have the capacity or capability to begin tackling digital preservation within their institution?
The presentation offers a different take based on Dan's experience working as an analyst and consultant for a software development company engaging with many different types of organizations and individuals in the cultural heritage sector. While acknowledging that the under-resourced nature of cultural heritage work plays a key role, this presentation examines some oft-encountered perceptual or cognitive barriers to getting started with digital preservation. It then provides some suggestions on how to overcome these barriers, acknowledging that anything is better than nothing when it comes to DP, and that sometimes perfect can be the enemy of good.

2. Archivematica
● Free, open source software for normalizing, sanitizing,
and packaging digital content for long-term preservation
● Supports hundreds of file formats
● Customizable
● Integrated with third-party systems
● Based on standards like BagIt, PREMIS, and METS
3. History of Archivematica
First developed by Artefactual in 2007 as a back-end for
ICA-AtoM (Access to Memory) and called Qubit-OAIS.
Qubit-OAIS was based on standards published by the
International Council on Archives, who were key partners in
the development of ICA-AtoM.
4. History of Archivematica
“Over time ... the [Artefactual] development team recognized
that the direct association with ICA-AtoM may be too
exclusive, obscuring the larger goal to allow Archivematica to
integrate with other systems.”

Challenges, pg. 3

5. History of Archivematica
The City of Vancouver Archives (CVA) was one of the first
institutions to allocate resources for Archivematica
development.
Working with CVA staff, Artefactual developers developed a
workflow that aligned with the Reference Model for an Open
Archival Information System (OAIS), a best practices
framework developed by the astronomical community for
data preservation.
6. History of Archivematica
● Almost 10 years after Qubit-OAIS was developed,
Archivematica is now in version 1.5.1.
● It continues to grow every year through sponsored
development from institutions all over the world.
● It has an active user community, and this year we offered
the first ever Archivematica Camp - an intensive four-day
workshop all about Archivematica.
10. RDC-Arq
● Diretrizes para a Implementação de Repositórios
Arquivísticos Digitais Confiáveis1
○ In English: Guideline for the Implementation of Trusted Digital
Archival Repositories
○ Defines how to design, build, and deploy a repository that stores
archival documents for long-term preservation
○ Promotes authenticity (identity and integrity), confidentiality,
access, and preservation
● A Trusted Digital Archival Repository provides
preservation AND access to documents for the long term
11. The repository must manage
documents and metadata in
accordance with archival principles
and best practices, specifically
related to document management,
multilevel archival description, and
preservation.2
13. Standards-based architecture
BagIt
● Standard for packaging multilevel, hierarchical content,
developed by the Library of Congress (USA)
METS
● XML schema for encoding descriptive, administrative,
and technical metadata, also developed by the Library of
Congress
14. Standards-based architecture
PREMIS
● Standard for defining preservation metadata, such as
formats, implementation, hardware requirements,
agents, and rights, developed by the Library of Congress
Dublin Core (ISO 15836:2009)
● Standard for capturing descriptive metadata, developed
by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative
15. Standards-based architecture
PRONOM
● Technical registry providing impartial and definitive
information about file formats, software products and
other technical components required to support
long-term access to electronic records, developed and
maintained by the National Archives of the UK.
17. The repository must protect the
archival characteristics of the
document, in particular authenticity
(integrity and identity) and organic
relationships.2
18. Authenticity
METS.xml (including PREMIS-in-METS)
● The METS.xml is the statement of record for an
Archivematica AIP
● It describes the initial state of the transfer, the changes
that took place while Archivematica was running, and the
final state of the transfer
● Everything that happens to a file is recorded in the
METS.XML
19. Authenticity
Checksums
● A checksum is a calculation of each unit of data in a file
● Archivematica generates checksums early in the transfer
process, ensuring that file integrity is captured at the
beginning of the workflow
● If you created checksums prior to transferring your
material into Archivematica, you can add them to a
transfer. Archivematica will verify them and use them
going forward.
20. Authenticity
UUIDs
● Unique universal identifiers ensure that every file
transferred into Archivematica is identifiable
● UUIDs are applied to files, directories, and packages
21. Relationships
METS.xml structmap
● The METS structmap describes the arrangement of the
SIP and the AIP, preserving contextual relationships even
if the files are moved
Metadata
● Information included in the Dublin Core metadata
dc.relations field will be written to the METS as well
22. The repository must preserve and
provide access to authentic digital
archival documents for the necessary
amount of time.2
23. Format agnostic packages
● Archivematica creates content and format agnostic AIPs,
meaning that you do not require a particular system to
store and read AIPs in the future
● AIPs can be stored in any file system that permits
packaged formats (.tar files, .zip files)
● You can migrate AIPs between systems just like any
other type of file or package
24. Hosted and local storage
● The Archivematica team has completed storage
integrations with Amazon Web Services (S3 and Glacier),
Microsoft Azure
● There are full integrations with systems like Arkivum and
DuraCloud
25. Store files where it makes sense
● Whatever storage system you choose to use, you can
implement tools to run checksum validation, virus scans,
and other authentication tools.
● Systems like Arkivum and DuraCloud are intended for
long-term storage and have built-in authentication tools.
● Ensuring that your data is regularly backed up and
verified happens outside of Archivematica, but is critical
for meeting this requirement.
26. Providing access
● Archivematica has integrations with AtoM,
ArchivesSpace (and Archivists’ Toolkit), and DSpace - you
can automatically upload DIPs to these systems to make
them accessible to the public.
● DIPs are also system-agnostic, so developing integrations
with other open-source platforms is easy - or the
contents can be uploaded manually.
27. The repository must comply with ISO
16363: 2012, which lists the criteria
that a trusted digital repository must
meet.2
28. ISO 16363:2012
● Audit and certification of trustworthy digital repositories
– sets out comprehensive metrics for what an archive
must do
● Based on the OAIS functional model
● Archivematica fulfills many of digital object management
criteria in ISO 16363, but other aspects must be fulfilled
using complementary systems
33. And ensuring that the
system is content
agnostic, open source,
and interoperable...
34. Gives us the best
opportunity to
preserve our digital
content.
35. Archivematica
With Archivematica, we’ve tried to build a tool that is robust
enough that takes care of a lot of the more difficult aspects of
digital preservation, like checksum creation and validation,
format identification, and file normalization.
But we’ve also tried to build a tool that is customizable and
extensible enough to work with use cases in many different
kinds of institutions, all over the world.
36. Archivematica
Adding new tools, removing obsolete tools, and adapting the
system to reflect best practices in digital preservation is key
to making sure that Archivematica continues to be a leader in
digital preservation.
Archivematica is built for and by a community of dedicated
users and digital preservation experts.
