The Mah Meri is an ethnic group native to western part of Peninsular Malaysia. „Mah‟ is the
word for people and „Meri‟ refers to the forest, so they are generally known as „orang hutan‟
in Malay, means forest people. Nature is the main belief of their tribe, as they practise
animism.
With the idea of conservative the nature, the design utilised the space in between the trees,
running through and forms a fluid form. The building is elevated from the ground in order not
to disturb the growing tree roof and also have the benefit of cooling the building. The
opening along the wall to the roof functioning as natural illuminator and offer a feeling of
embracing by nature. The shade of existing trees enhanced the atmosphere of the wide and
poetic corridor, which also improved the quality of spatial experience, the visitor can walk
freely and enjoy the nature and shading without obstruction. Moreover, the use of timber has
intention to integrate the site and the initial idea, which is emphasize the importance of
nature towards to Mah Meri and unity of the tribe, so the culture of Mah Meri will be continue
practiced and introduce to more people.

The target user is a farmer, has a regular daily timeline, always enjoyed
his free time at this retreat house after work. Also, the farmer has a
personality of easy-going and generous, the design tends to be simple
and peaceful.
The concept begins from a tropical tree found on site, as known as sea
almond (Terminalia Cattapa, local name in Malay), that will produce
editable fruit. The spreading and vase shape of the branches creates
good shade and interesting when the leaves turn pinkish=reddish before
failing. Besides that, the site is surrounded by deep density of trees that
increase the privacy to a open plan and also cooling the site.

The circular form is concentrate splining from the ground to the top. A big and open living
space is located at starting point, so he can enjoys the happy time with his friend and the
peaceful environment. The privacy level of spaces tend to increase after the living area, the
further it is, the more private it will be. The functions of spaces expressed the calmness and
self-cultivation of the user, as he favours tranquil and meditative activities. At the end of the
journey, where is a big roof walkway, user can pluck the fruits and enjoy the breeze bring by
mother nature. Also, the use of timber as construction material is because texture of timber is
as friendly as the environment and good in heat dissipation. So the whole building will remain
fresh and cool, especially in dry-season.

“You Are So Near Yet So Far” is the concept behind of this
project, that represent the hard feeling between the death of
victim in sinking of MV Sewol and their family. By using different
height of walls and place randomly, it disconnected the
connection of visitors with walls within the memorial, yet they
still can feel the existence of each other. The different material
of surfaces offer different experiences of the journey, rough
surface represent the hardship and the smooth surface is
reflected the joyous before the tragedy occurred.

Opening is enhanced the mystery of the spatial
experience, a flash off moment will be occur when
people quickly passing by, it expressed the feeling of
“You are so near, yet so far”, as we can not see clearly
and can not catch the shadow.

A maze created a feeling

Visitors at different spaces are actually close to each
other, but being separated by the barrier, which
reflect the relationship between the victims with their
family and rescuers from the incident of MV Sewol
20. Language, a tool of people use for communication, is the main concept of this
project. Based on the analysis, there are two major user from this site, local
resident and tourist. However, they are only active in their own district, namely
tourist district and local district. In order to encourage these two group of
people communicate and intergrade to connect the disconnection, language is
the way. On the other, there are few traditional language is endangered in
Malacca, such as baba Malay and krisranpang by Portuguese, so they will be
introduced in the programs offered.
The design is developed from an axis point and with the concern of direct
attention from public. So all the public space is designed to be as open as
possible, wide open space higher the chance of people bump into each other
and also big open space sometime provide invisible privacy. The building has
two entrances which response to the street‟s circulation pattern , where is the
pedestrian walkway along the river and another one is from red building. The
site is a strategy location where it sits in the middle of the districts, nearby the
red building is a forfeit by Portugal, as known as “ Bastion Victoria”. It is located
within our site and a suspended viewing platform is design on it for people
experience walking on it and observe it clearly.
The double skinned facade is inspired by the tree along the site, that create
shade but also provide transparency to the street, that make indoor activity can
be visible by street people and attract their attendance. Besides that, the lattice
of wood pattern offer people a friendly and approachable feel.
