National Burrito Day is celebrated on the first Thursday of April (this
year on April 2) — a day to pay homage to the delicious tortillas stuffed
with meat, cheese, beans, rice, vegetables, and sauces. The day
celebrates everyone’s appreciation for burritos. The Mexican dish is
popular all over the world, but it has only been offered in American
restaurants since the 1930s.

The Jewish holiday commemorates the Biblical story of Exodus —
where God freed the Israelites from Egypt. Passover, celebrated for
eight days, begins with an evening Seder — a traditional dinner with
very specific foods and wine.This meal includes readings from the
“Haggadah,” which tells the holiday’s story. Themes include family,
Jewish history, social justice, and freedom.

Christians mark Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the Last

Mysteries in various traditions. Maundy refers to the foot-washing
Jesus provided the apostles prior to the Last Supper. Christians
around the world, especially Catholics, mark the day with a special
mass and prayers.

It’s now growing into a nationwide day of both remembrance and
celebration. Most, if not all, states have issued gubernatorial proclamations
to observe this day on April 10. Three U.S. presidents have recognized the
event — most recently, President Obama in 2016.

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) sponsors the Day of
Silence, held annually on a Friday in April. It’s a time when students across the
country take a solemn stand against the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay,

More than one billion people speak Chinese as their first language —
that’s more than any other population in the world! UNESCO (part of
the United Nations) first created Chinese Language Day in 2010 to
celebrate Chinese as one of the six official languages of the United
Nations. We’ve enjoyed it every year since on April 20.
02 NATIONAL LOOK-ALIKE DAY
Ever heard the saying “there’s someone else out there who has the
same face as you”? According to you, it’s probably Bradley Cooper or
Beyoncé. But in all likelihood, it’s a normal person you’ll never meet
(with 7.4 billion people on the planet, there’s bound to be someone
else out there who shares some of your features). Regardless, on April

Marvel employees created National Superhero Day on April 28,
1995. That’s Marvel, as in Marvel Comics, the creators of “The

02 INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY DAY
Astronomy Day is a day to look up to the stars. It was established
to promote astronomy to the general public. Astronomy clubs and
groups use this day to help teach the people about the stars, and
other celestial bodies in the universe. These groups take
advantage of this day to offer people a view of the stars through
a telescope, if possible.There is also an Astronomy Week. It begins
the Monday before Astronomy Day.

The Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute
created this day in 1982 to highlight the amazing diversity and
talent of dancers all over the globe on April 29. It marks the
birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern
ballet.
02 NATIONAL SHRIMP SCAMPI DAY
Shrimp scampi has different meanings around the world. In the
U.S. “shrimp scampi” is the “menu name” for shrimp in Italian-
American cuisine. Scampi’s served in garlic butter, dry white wine,
and parmesan cheese — either with bread, or over pasta or rice —
although sometimes just the shrimp alone. Most variants of
“shrimp scampi” come on pasta. Consider National Shrimp
Scampi Day on April 29 your opportunity to have this dish any way
you like.

All. That. Jazz. Many consider it “America’s classical music.” After
all, jazz began in New Orleans over 100 years ago. Legendary jazz

the world as this day promotes jazz’s roots and intercultural
influence every April 30.
