Holidays Calendar
MAY, 2020
SOCIONADO
The merry month of May
celebrates spring in full
swing, and boasts a
number of seasonal,
foodie, and pop culture
days. At Socionado we
love celebrating 75 May
holidays!
01 MAY DAY
Today, specifically in the United States as other countries, it
is a celebration of the season of Spring. We’ve got the best
tips to make sure that your May Day is one to remember!
MAY 1
02 INTERNATIONAL SPACE DAY
Space Day gives you the opportunity participate in the
excitement and fascination of space. It's a topic of
interest to millions, old and young alike.
03 SAVE THE RHINO DAY
Native to Africa, this leftover from the age of Dinosaurs was
hunted to near extinction. Hunters on safaris, killed Rhinos
just for sport. Poachers hunted them for their horn.
02 NATIONAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS DAY
Today is dedicated to the people who (we hope) made your
childhood memorable — your siblings. They’ve been there for you
during the good times. And they haven’t left your side through the
bad (even if they created it by getting you in trouble).
MAY 2
01 FREE COMIC BOOK DAY
Free Comic Book Day arrives every first Saturday of May (May
2.) Iconic publishers like DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Dark
Horse Comics — along with others — join forces to make free
comics available at more than 2,300 stores across the country.

 0I STAR WARS DAY
The 1977 release of “Star Wars” changed Hollywood forever. Four
decades later we’re still enthralled. Just last December, “Star
Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker”, was released in
theaters. Following the previous two movies of the sequel trilogy,
“The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi”, the main Star Wars film
franchise has come to a conclusion. So — Happy Star Wars Day
this May 4!
02 NATIONAL BIRD DAY
National Bird Day was established by bird activists. It calls upon
people to recognize the plight of captive birds. It also draws
attention to exploitation of birds in the U.S. pet industry. On this
day, organizers suggest we reflect upon the conditions of birds
held in captivity.
MAY 4
01 CINCO DE MAYO
On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at
the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat
of a European colonial power, and a victory for the Mexican
people. Cinco De Mayo is celebrated by Mexicans, and especially
the Hispanic community in the U.S. It is a time of song, dance,
partying, and in general a time to be proud to be of Hispanic
descent.
02 NATIONAL TEACHER DAY
Today, the official national day celebrates teachers by gift-giving
and the showering of accolades from students and parents alike.
The hashtags #TeacherAppreciationDay and
#NationalTeachersDay are used on social media to show teachers
making a difference to the world at large.
MAY 5
01 NATIONAL NURSES DAY
If you think nurses are only found in hospitals, then think again!
The majority of registered nurses (59%) practice elsewhere, such
as a nursing home or on home visits. They work across
communities to keep people worldwide happy and healthy, and
National Nurses Day is the perfect opportunity to show your
appreciation for their important work!
02 NO DIET DAY
International No Diet Day is a good opportunity to re-assess and
evaluate your weight management goals and perspective, and to
make certain your efforts to be thin don't come at a risk to your
health. If you decide that continuing your diet is right for you, then
use today to take a one day break.
MAY 6
02 NATIONAL DAY OF
PRAYER
According to the National Day of
Prayer website, there’s a need for
every individual to take time to
personal repentance and prayer
and to mobilize the Christian
community. However, there’s no
laws saying National Day of Prayer
can’t be celebrated by all cultures,
beliefs, and religions, and as
America grew to become a
multicultural nation, it is widely
celebrated by more than just those
in the Christian community.
01 NATIONAL
TOURISM DAY
If you are a tourist venue, use this
day to really spread the word on
what you are all about. As a
tourist, use today in search of a
new, exciting, and interesting
place to go. And, look for deals
that may be offered today. Don't
just browse and dream. Book your
travel plans today!
03 WORLD
PASSWORD DAY
Intel created World Password Day
— the first Thursday of May (May
7) — to address the critical need
for solid passwords. It’s simple,
really. Most operating systems
offer an easy way to create and
store passwords. Apple’s
“Keychain Access” is one
example. You can also go online
to generate passwords which are
practically hacker-proof.
MAY 7
02 MILITARY SPOUSES DAY
Military Spouses Day is a day to recognize and honor the real
backbone of the military..... the spouses of our soldiers. This day
recognizes the contributions made by military spouses to the spirit and
well being of soldiers and military communities. Where would military
moral be without their spouses behind them?
MAY 8
01 CHILD CARE PROVIDER DAY
Use today to let your child care provider know how much they are
appreciated. Give them a card, and a big thank you. Small gifts are
acceptable, but not a requirement.
02 NATIONAL TRAIN DAY
On May 9, 1869 the tracks of the two railroad companies met up at
Promontory Summit, Utah. A golden spike was driven into the final
connection of the two tracks. The first Continental rail line was 1,776 miles
long. Towns, big and small, would soon sprout up along the route.
MAY 9
01 NATIONAL MOSCATO DAY
Grab a glass of vino and toast to National Moscato Day! Every May 9,
we celebrate the tasty white wine we can’t help but love. Moscato is
historically known as a dessert wine (no wonder it’s so delicious) and
is originally from Piedmont, Italy. When you uncork a bottle, you can
expect a blend of peachy, orangey, and nectarine flavors. In our
book, a drink like that is definitely worth celebrating. Cheers!
02 NATIONAL SHRIMP DAY
Shrimp fans all across the country can come together to honor their love
for the shellfish, commonly called the “fruit of the sea.” Shrimp are
interesting characters, and some can even glow in the dark!
MAY 10
01 MOTHER'S DAY
The first Mother's Day was May 10, 1908 in Philadelphia.You can't do
wrong in Mom's eyes. When you are hurt, or not feeling well....there is no
one else that can help you more than Mom.First and foremost, spend
time with her. If you absolutely can not be there, take time for a long
phone call. Flowers, cards, candy and gifts are all part of the day. But,
mom wants some time with you far more than anything else.
02 TWILIGHT ZONE DAY
Twilight Zone Day is mysterious, weird, surreal and perhaps a little
scary. We can think of many other adjectives, but I think you get the
picture. Every once in a while, you have a day like this. And, today is
designed to be that day.
MAY 11
01 EAT WHAT YOU WANT DAY
What would you like to have to eat today? Okay, great.....health
permitting, go ahead and have any and all of your favorite foods and
snacks. Because today is Eat What You Want Day.
01 LIMERICK DAY
This day is a time to enjoy and get your fill of
Limerick poems.A Limerick is a humorous
verse or poem. It is five lines longs. It's name
come from the city of Limerick, Ireland. The
first two lines rhyme with the fifth line rhyme.
The third and fourth lines rhyme.
02 NATIONAL FATIGUE
SYNDROME DAY
Today recognizes the fact that
sometimes life is just too tiring.
Perhaps you're tired because you
are not getting enough sleep.
Perhaps, you're stressed out. Some
people experience chronic fatigue
from worrying, or due to problems.
These are all common causes of
persistent fatigue. Whatever the
cause, use today to identify it, and
to correct it.
MAY 12
01 NATIONAL APPLE PIE DAY
Apple pie has been around since the Middle Ages. A Dutch
cookbook dated 1514 lists a recipe for Appeltaart. It called for a
standard pie crust, slices of soft seedless apples, and a few tasty
spices—specifically cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove,
mace, and sugar—all cooked up in a traditional Dutch oven.
02 FAIR TRADE DAY
On May 13, Fair Trade Day will honor the movement for a world in
which all laborers are paid more fairly for the work they do and
the products they create. Fair trade aims to create a more equal
and positive working situation for laborers around the world.
MAY 13
01 NATIONAL BUTTERMILK BISCUIT DAY
There’s nothing quite like a flaky, buttermilk biscuit paired with
jam, honey, maple syrup, or butter to send your taste buds into
overdrive. What better way to celebrate a long-standing Southern
tradition than by commemorating National Buttermilk Biscuit Day
on May 14?
02 DANCE LIKE A CHICKEN DAY
It's tradition at every wedding reception to play and to dance the
Chicken Dance. It gets people of all ages up dancing and
mingling. It puts a smile on everyone's face.
MAY 14
01 NATIONAL PIZZA PARTY DAY
Having a blast on National Pizza Party Day is no pie-in-the-sky
idea. Pizza’s the very definition of a good time and your May 15
options are plentiful.
02 NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP DAY
03 INTERTIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES
National Chocolate Chip Day celebrates and enjoys sweet, tasty
chocolate chips. Chocolate chips are a great invention, and
certainly deserve a little recognition. After all, where would
chocolate chip cookies, cakes and muffins be without the
chocolate chip!?
Families—both traditional and non-traditional—are the foundation
of society. Some of the most formative years of our lives are spent
growing up with our families, so they should be celebrated!
MAY 15
01 NATIONAL ARMED FORCES DAY
Armed Forces Day is a special holiday for people all over the
world to come together and thank the men and women of the
United States Armed Forces. First conceived by President Harry S.
Truman, the holiday was established in 1949.
02 NATIONAL MIMOSA DAY
Brunch enthusiasts and cocktail fanatics mark your calendars —
May 16 is National Mimosa Day! This classic mixed drink, which is
equal parts brut champagne and fruit juice (usually orange juice),
has become a brunch staple and a popular drink at weddings.
MAY 16
01 NATIONAL WALNUT DAY
They may not be as popular as almonds or peanuts,
but let’s show walnuts some respect: they’re great for
your heart, your brain, and your bones; you can
incorporate them into any meal; and they’ve literally
been around for almost 10,000 years.
MAY 17
01 NATIONAL NO DIRTY
DISHES DAY
Whether you’re a mother, father, sister,
brother, or roommate, no one likes dirty
dishes. That is why on May 18, we celebrate
National No Dirty Dishes Day.
02 INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM
DAY
International Museum Day is a good
opportunity to visit, appreciate, and support
your local museum. The goals of International
Museum Day are to give museum
professionals the opportunity to meet the
public, and to make the public aware of
challenges faced by museums. Each year, a
different theme is promoted.
MAY 18
MAY 19
01 NATIONAL ENDANGERED SPECIES DAY
Animal lovers and conservationists unite: May 19 is
National Endangered Species Day. This is a day to
consider the dwindling populations of certain
animals and work together to help.
MAY 20
01 NATIONAL BE A MILLIONAIRE DAY
When you think of being a millionaire, what’s the first thing that comes
to your mind? It could be the ability to buy whatever you want, travel
the world, practice philanthropy on a grand scale, or just eliminating
debt. Whatever your personal dreams may be, let’s all celebrate
National Be a Millionaire Day on May 20, by doing at least one thing
that makes us feel like a million. The point is, while you’re on your way
to becoming a  millionaire, focus now on whatever it is that makes
you feel rich!
02 PICK STRAWBERRIES DAY
Pick Strawberries Day is a sweet, tasty way to enjoy a late spring day.
If your mom or dad ever took you picking fresh strawberries, you have a
wonderful childhood memory.
MAY 21
01 NATIONAL WAITSTAFF DAY
Just for a minute, think about all the people who serve you food and
drinks: the barista that remembers just how you like your incredibly
complicated coffee drink, the waiter at the sandwich spot who helps
sort out all your large group’s orders, the bartender who serves your gin
and tonic with a side of English distillery history. Now put yourself in their
hopefully very comfortable shoes. Yep, that’s what we though. On May
21, National Waitstaff Day, let’s turn the tables, and serve these special
people a super-sized helping of our appreciation.
02 NATIONAL MEMO DAY
Take a memo... Today is National Memo Day. What is it for? Who created it?
Why? These are questions awaiting an answer that may never come. Every
once in a while, we discover a special day with no known history or
description.
MAY 22
01 INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL
DIVERSITY
If you’re looking for a day to show your love for our planet, why
not celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity on May
22? This is a day dedicated to making sure that Earth remains a
place where all creatures—no matter what environment they
depend on—can not only survive, but also thrive
02 HARVEY MILK DAY
On May 22, we honor the life and legacy of Harvey Milk, the first
openly gay politician in California and a leader of the American Civil
Rights Movement. Milk was not only an advocate for the LGBT
community, but for all minorities. He believed in safe, strong
neighborhoods and supported public education, affordable
childcare, and equal rights for all.
MAY 23
01 NATIONAL JAZZ DAY
Enjoy International Jazz Day by sitting back and listening to your
favorite Jazz tunes. Preferably, listen to them today as they are
being played by a live jazz band
02 NATIONAL TAFFY DAY
On May 23, we celebrate our favorite sweet and chewy treat on
National Taffy Day. Taffy has a long history as one of America’s
native sweets. Common lore has it that in the 1880s, a Jersey Shore
candy shop got flooded, soaking the shop’s taffy stock with
Atlantic salt water.
01 NATIONAL BROHTER'S DAY
May 24 is National Brother’s Day, so call your
brother and tell him you love him, even
though he’ll say you‘re weird afterwards.
When you were younger, you argued over
LEGOs or whose turn it was to sit in the front
seat. Yet in some strange way, those
childhood squabbles served to make you
closer over the years.
02 NATIONAL
SCAVENGER HUNT DAY
Scavenger hunting, which originally
evolved from folk games, became
especially popular in the U.S. during
the 1930s, and regular events are still
held today, notably at schools like the
University of Chicago.Whatever style
appeals to you, celebrate National
Scavenger Hunt Day on May 24 by
either participating in a hunt, or
planning one of your own!
MAY 24
01 MEMORIAL DAY
Memorial Day, May 25, for many Americans, conjures up images
of hamburgers, hot dogs, swimming pools, and summertime . But
the last Monday in May serves, most importantly, as a time to
honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces.
It’s a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition.
The day actually began as “Decoration Day,” following the Civil
War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and
Confederate soldiers. Yes, Memorial Day has also come to
signify the “unofficial” start of summer, but let’s remember the
heroes who made it all possible.
02 NATIONAL WINE DAY
We don’t typically need an “official” reason to celebrate over a
bottle of wine but today we have one – it’s National Wine Day,
celebrated annually on May 25.
MAY 25
01 NATIONAL PAPER PLANE DAY
The day is usually celebrated with contests in two basic flight
categories: distance and time in air. The practice of constructing
paper planes is sometimes referred to as aerogami, after origami,
the Japanese art of paper folding.
02 SALLY RIDE DAY
Sally Ride Day honors the first American woman astronaut to go
into space. Dr. Ride accomplished this feat as a mission specialist
aboard STS-7, the second flight of the Space Shuttle
"Challenger". STS-7 was launched from Kennedy Space Center,
Florida, on June 18, 1983.
MAY 26
01 NATIONAL SUNSCREEN DAY
Don’t fry today! National Sunscreen Day (also known as “Don’t Fry
Day”) happens on May 27 in 2020. It’s a perfect time to get in the
habit. The day reminds us that the sun’s harmful UV rays pose
threats to our skin — and our health. Dont forget to practice social
distancing when outside!
MAY 27
01 NATIONAL BRISKET DAY
Unless you live in Texas, you might not have too much
experience with the cut of beef known as brisket, but May 28 is
a fine day to change that. Brisket is good for so much more than
just barbecue or corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day.
02 SHAVUOT
02 NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY
Shavuot—or the Feast of Weeks—is a Jewish holiday, celebrated
between May 28-30 on the Gregorian calendar. The holiday has
both an agricultural and biblical significance. Agriculturally, it
marks the wheat harvest in Israel. Biblically, it commemorates
the day God gave the nation of Israel the Torah on Mount Sinai.
Every May 28, National Hamburger Day celebrates
America’s most iconic food. Americans eat over 50 billion
burgers a year, so it’s only fitting we set aside a whole day
for these special sandwiches
MAY 28
01 LEARN ABOUT COMPOSTING DAY
May 29 is National Learn About Composting Day! We all
want to do our part to conserve natural resources and
reduce our carbon footprint. Composting is not only an
environmentally safe fertilizer but it can help you save
water, energy, fuel, and money! It also keeps toxins from
getting in our run-off and groundwater through the use of
chemical- based commercial fertilizers. The use of a
natural fertilizer made from compost will make your
garden hospitable to wildlife helpers like honeybees,
hummingbirds and of course, worms!
MAY 29
01 MINT JULEP DAY
Today is Mint Julep Day. It's a day to enjoy and savor this frosty
and refreshing southern classic drink.Mint Julep is an bourbon
based alcoholic beverage. A related version of it, is gin based. It
originated and is very popular today in areas south of the Mason-
Dixon line in the United States.
02 WATER A FLOWER DAY
Don't you just love May? The weather has turned ideal, and the
month is filled with garden related holidays. Today is another
great one. It's Water a Flower Day. This special day exists to
reminder you to water your flowers...all of them.
MAY 30
01 WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY
Each year, the World Health Organization (WHO) holds World
No Tobacco Day on May 31. Their goal is to spread awareness
about the risks of tobacco use and how we can make the
world tobacco free. Roughly 6 million people die from
tobacco-related ailments every year. And that number is
projected to rise to over 8 million by 2030. But this is by no
means a guarantee. The Sustainable Development Agenda
aims to reduce deaths from noninfectious diseases by a third.
Diseases linked to tobacco are on the list, so if we hit the
target, 2030 will be a year to celebrate (oh yea!)—not only for
our health, but the size of our wallets. Your average smoker
drops around $4,000 on cigarettes annually. Imagine all of
the other cool holidays you could enjoy with that money (we
have a few suggestions, just saying). So let’s use World No
Tobacco Day as a launching pad to a brighter and less
smokey future!

Just last December, “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker”, was released in theaters. Following the previous two movies of the sequel trilogy, “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi”, the main Star Wars film franchise has come to a conclusion. So — Happy Star Wars Day this May 4! 02 NATIONAL BIRD DAY  National Bird Day was established by bird activists. It calls upon people to recognize the plight of captive birds. It also draws attention to exploitation of birds in the U.S. pet industry. On this day, organizers suggest we reflect upon the conditions of birds held in captivity. MAY 4
  • 7. 01 CINCO DE MAYO On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power, and a victory for the Mexican people. Cinco De Mayo is celebrated by Mexicans, and especially the Hispanic community in the U.S. It is a time of song, dance, partying, and in general a time to be proud to be of Hispanic descent. 02 NATIONAL TEACHER DAY Today, the official national day celebrates teachers by gift-giving and the showering of accolades from students and parents alike. The hashtags #TeacherAppreciationDay and #NationalTeachersDay are used on social media to show teachers making a difference to the world at large. MAY 5

If you decide that continuing your diet is right for you, then use today to take a one day break. MAY 6
  • 9. 02 NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER According to the National Day of Prayer website, there’s a need for every individual to take time to personal repentance and prayer and to mobilize the Christian community. However, there’s no laws saying National Day of Prayer can’t be celebrated by all cultures, beliefs, and religions, and as America grew to become a multicultural nation, it is widely celebrated by more than just those in the Christian community. 01 NATIONAL TOURISM DAY If you are a tourist venue, use this day to really spread the word on what you are all about. The first Continental rail line was 1,776 miles long. Towns, big and small, would soon sprout up along the route. MAY 9 01 NATIONAL MOSCATO DAY Grab a glass of vino and toast to National Moscato Day! Every May 9, we celebrate the tasty white wine we can’t help but love. Moscato is historically known as a dessert wine (no wonder it’s so delicious) and is originally from Piedmont, Italy. When you uncork a bottle, you can expect a blend of peachy, orangey, and nectarine flavors. In our book, a drink like that is definitely worth celebrating. Cheers!
  • 12. 02 NATIONAL SHRIMP DAY Shrimp fans all across the country can come together to honor their love for the shellfish, commonly called the “fruit of the sea.” Shrimp are interesting characters, and some can even glow in the dark! MAY 10 01 MOTHER'S DAY The first Mother's Day was May 10, 1908 in Philadelphia. You can't do wrong in Mom's eyes. When you are hurt, or not feeling well....there is no one else that can help you more than Mom.First and foremost, spend time with her. If you absolutely can not be there, take time for a long phone call. Flowers, cards, candy and gifts are all part of the day. But, mom wants some time with you far more than anything else.
  • 13. 02 TWILIGHT ZONE DAY Twilight Zone Day is mysterious, weird, surreal and perhaps a little scary. We can think of many other adjectives, but I think you get the picture. Every once in a while, you have a day like this. And, today is designed to be that day. MAY 11 01 EAT WHAT YOU WANT DAY What would you like to have to eat today? It could be the ability to buy whatever you want, travel the world, practice philanthropy on a grand scale, or just eliminating debt. Whatever your personal dreams may be, let’s all celebrate National Be a Millionaire Day on May 20, by doing at least one thing that makes us feel like a million. • 26. 01 NATIONAL BROHTER'S DAY May 24 is National Brother’s Day, so call your brother and tell him you love him, even though he’ll say you‘re weird afterwards. Yet in some strange way, those childhood squabbles served to make you closer over the years. 02 NATIONAL SCAVENGER HUNT DAY Scavenger hunting, which originally evolved from folk games, became especially popular in the U.S. during the 1930s, and regular events are still held today, notably at schools like the University of Chicago.Whatever style appeals to you, celebrate National Scavenger Hunt Day on May 24 by either participating in a hunt, or planning one of your own! MAY 24
  • 27. 01 MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day, May 25, for many Americans, conjures up images of hamburgers, hot dogs, swimming pools, and summertime . But the last Monday in May serves, most importantly, as a time to honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. The day actually began as “Decoration Day,” following the Civil War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Yes, Memorial Day has also come to signify the “unofficial” start of summer, but let’s remember the heroes who made it all possible. 02 NATIONAL WINE DAY We don’t typically need an “official” reason to celebrate over a bottle of wine but today we have one – it’s National Wine Day, celebrated annually on May 25. MAY 25

  • 33. 01 WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY Each year, the World Health Organization (WHO) holds World No Tobacco Day on May 31. Their goal is to spread awareness about the risks of tobacco use and how we can make the world tobacco free. Roughly 6 million people die from tobacco-related ailments every year. And that number is projected to rise to over 8 million by 2030. But this is by no means a guarantee. The Sustainable Development Agenda aims to reduce deaths from noninfectious diseases by a third. Diseases linked to tobacco are on the list, so if we hit the target, 2030 will be a year to celebrate (oh yea!)—not only for our health, but the size of our wallets. Your average smoker drops around $4,000 on cigarettes annually. Imagine all of the other cool holidays you could enjoy with that money (we have a few suggestions, just saying). So let’s use World No Tobacco Day as a launching pad to a brighter and less smokey future! MAY 31
