Parse Server Open Source
Parse Server is an open source backend as a service (BaaS) framework that allows developers to use the Parse API with their own infrastructure. It was created by Parse to allow developers to continue using the Parse API and migrating apps from Parse after it shuts down. Parse Server allows for more flexibility than Parse.com by allowing hosting anywhere, local development/testing, no preset query limits, custom databases/indexes, live queries, and functionality like Push Notifications, Pointer Permissions, and Config that have been added. Developers can get started by following Parse's migration guide and using Parse Server is expected to continue improving over time as an open source project.
Benchmarking at Parse
The document discusses Parse's process for benchmarking MongoDB upgrades by replaying recorded production workloads on test servers. They found a 33-75% drop in throughput when upgrading from 2.4.10 to 2.6.3 due to query planner bugs. Working with MongoDB, they identified and helped fix several bugs, improving performance in 2.6.5 but still below 2.4.10 levels initially. Further optimization work increased throughput above 2.4.10 levels when testing with more workers and operations.

Django deployment with PaaS
This presentation was given at the Boston Django meetup on November 16, and surveyed several leading PaaS providers including Stackato, Dotcloud, OpenShift and Heroku.
For each PaaS provider, I documented the steps necessary to deploy Mezzanine, a popular Django-based CMS and blogging platform.
At the end of the presentation, I do a wrap-up of the different providers and provide a comparison matrix showing which providers have which features. This matrix is likely to go out-of-date quickly because these providers are adding new features all the time.

Code testing and Continuous Integration are just the first step in a source code to production process. Combined with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Puppet the whole process can be automated, and tested!

Rust & Python : Python WA October meetup
RustPython is a project that implements the Python programming language in Rust. It started in May 2018 and released version 0.3 in September 2023. The standard library has been written in Rust and pip package management works. RustPython can compile to WebAssembly to run Python code in web browsers and has an experimental just-in-time compiler. Several popular Python packages were tested with varying results, with some packages like Django and others not working due to missing Python modules or compiler issues. Packaging Python modules that use Rust is becoming increasingly common using tools like PyO3, with over 50,000 downloads per day of related projects.
How to go the extra mile on monitoring
This document provides instructions for monitoring additional metrics from clusters and applications using Grafana, Prometheus, JMX, and PushGateway. It includes steps to export JMX metrics from Kafka and NiFi, setup and use PushGateway to collect and expose custom metrics, and create Grafana dashboards to visualize the metrics.

Bare Metal to OpenStack with Razor and Chef
Razor is an open source provisioning tool that was originally developed by EMC and Puppet Labs. It can discover hardware, select images to deploy, and provision nodes using model-based provisioning. The demo showed setting up a Razor appliance, adding images, models, policies, and brokers. It then deployed an OpenStack all-in-one environment to a new VM using Razor and Chef. The OpenStack cookbook walkthrough explained the roles, environments, and cookbooks used to deploy and configure OpenStack components using Chef.
Getting Started with OpenStack Development
Michael Still gave a presentation on how to get started with OpenStack development. He covered setting up accounts on Launchpad and Gerrit, signing the CLA, testing code changes using tox and pep8, and submitting changes for review on Gerrit. The goal was to guide attendees through the entire process from their first patch submission to answering questions. After the session, attendees would understand how to participate in OpenStack development.

This proactive approach allows manufacturers to identify and fix weaknesses, significantly enhancing system security.
This presentation delves into the development of a system designed to mimic Galileo's Open Service signal using software-defined radio (SDR) technology. We'll begin with a foundational overview of both Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and the intricacies of digital signal processing.
The presentation culminates in a live demonstration. We'll showcase the manipulation of Galileo's Open Service pilot signal, simulating an attack on various software and hardware systems. This practical demonstration serves to highlight the potential consequences of unaddressed vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of offensive security practices in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications.
