students constantly and likes Expeditions, but wishes there was some way to turn
him from a LECTURER….to a FACILITATOR.

Editor's Notes

  1. Mr. Leitner starts the day by mapping the room from the “Leader’s device” The area is split into 3 seperate resource maps. Depending on where the kids are seated, they are instantly a part of that region, and teams are formed. We’ll call these teams Poly, Classrooms, and Blocks. The students then take on one of 5 roles for each team: Workshop, Scientists, Trader, Miner, or Farmer.
  2. Now each kid can do their part. Let’s see what the miner’s screen looks like
  3. Here we see what a miner might see. 2 deposits, ready to mine. So let’s just view what tools the miner has available to them. They’ve only just started so the pickaxe which will provide pretty low yield gems and metals for the class, is all they have available. With everyone working together though, those metals can eventually become a Bulldozer for the miner, which will allow them to supply the classroom with a lot more. They’re going to need it, because as the land continues to be surveyed by the Scientists, they’ll find out that there’s more beyond the surface.
  4. Now over to the student in charge of trading! Poly team’s miner is a bit low on Food, but has plenty of Materials. They’ve bartered with the Classroom team’s Workshop to send them 3 Materials in exchange for some money to buy more Food from Farmers
  5. At this point. Imagine you’re a student. You’ve been playing the game for about 20 minutes or so. Achieving the flow state of the game. The class is doing pretty well for itself. Managing resources. Everyone has lots of money and food, two of the main resources of the game. Once all of the requisites are met for a scenario, the teacher receives an alert indicating that they can launch a scenario!
  6. Scenarios might also include: Prevent flooding! Send food to a neighboring colony. And more!
  7. Why do this? It has the potential to be a suite tool that works with Expeditions and the upcoming Astroturf. It can be the platform for change. Instead of bringing technology to students, bring students to the technology! Provide them with something they want that makes teachers happy. It uses the latest technology that we’re currently experimenting with, and gives AR something that it desperately needs. Every single asset in this deck was either made in Blocks VR or taken from Poly The only metric for failure when making a game, is that the game isn’t fun or engaging. This is designed using tried and true game mechanics that assure success. This project simply cannot fail. At worst, we get back tons of feedback from our users on how to improve UX. Tons and tons of data on student engagement. This information can be used to dole out improvements through patching. Most of all, the whole thing would be FUN! Fun to design, fun to make, fun to play! There just is no way to lose! Also, we already make games!
  8. When Google wants to teach you something new, whether it’s about the history of Hip Hop, or coding, we present you with a game! The natural progression of EDU is to make an interactive simulation that engages students and allows them to learn in ways that technology allows for.
