Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu to a poor family. He excelled in his education despite financial difficulties. After graduating with a degree in aeronautical engineering from Madras Institute of Technology, he joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation and Indian Space Research Organisation where he worked on development of ballistic missiles and satellites. He served as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and oversaw nuclear weapons tests in 1998, earning him the title of "Missile Man of India".
