GraphQL enables API consumers to retrieve data from backend services by defining the specific data needed in a query. This contrasts with REST APIs where the resource structure is defined by the provider. While GraphQL gives consumers more control, it also requires management of queries' impact on backend systems. API management solutions can enforce throttling, rate limits, access controls and pricing models for GraphQL APIs to provide threat protection and differentiated API plans.

GlueCon 2015 - Publish your SQL data as web APIsRestlet
With increasing demand for universal access to data, web APIs are an easy way to provide data sets to partners, customers, or even the entire world! For many businesses, bridging the gap between SQL databases and web APIs is not as easy as it looks. There are however simple ways to create data-driven APIs without programming. We’ll provide an overview of the technical challenges and how to overcome them. We’ll also show example deployments of APIs that provide access to SQL data.

Tabtale story: Building a publishing and monitoring mobile games architecture...Tikal Knowledge
At Tabtale we are setting up an entire server side for the all the publishing services. These services include dynamic game configurations, error collection, analytics, social services and more.Tabtale is among the world’s top app publishers with millions of downloads so we are putting a great deal of effort in creating an extremely highly scalable and fault tolerant architecture. In this talk I will go over the architecture decisions taken to support the scalability and diversity that is required from the server side services while keeping the management of this infrastructure sane.

Serverless computing is one of the hottest trends in software second only to containers. But most serverless function platforms suffer from vendor lock-in and a poor developer experience. Ideally, companies should be able to run their functions on any cloud choosing the one that offers the best value with the knowledge that they could change providers if need be. Developers should be able to build and test on their laptops knowing that the functions platform they’re developing on locally is same platform that’s running in the cloud—not some approximation or emulation. The purpose of the recently announced Fn project is to respond to these needs and to deliver an open source Apache 2.0 licensed functions platform that can run anywhere: laptop, server, cloud. In this session we’ll introduce Fn, its polyglot function support, and its Docker-based architecture that allows it to run on any platform and with any scheduler including Kubernetes, Mesos, and Swarm.
Tear It Down, Build It Back Up: Empowering Developers with Amazon CloudFormationJames Andrew Vaughn
As a product grows, and the infrastructure becomes more complex, the Operations team traditionally shoulders the burden of maintaining this infrastructure while deploying code from Software Engineers. Code is sometimes given to Operations with little to no information regarding how it should run or what the criteria for successful deployment is. This is not due to lack of caring, Software Engineers often lack the context themselves to provide production deployment instructions. To Software Engineers, production can be like a walled off city, filled with pathways and rooms not to be explored, guarded by Operations.
This presentation aims to provide a solution to this problem. We will address how the traditional separation of Operations and Software Engineers slows innovation, and redefine their relationship -- blending responsibilities. We will examine the transition of two real teams, an Operations team and Engineering team, from complete isolation, to closer environments through virtual machines, to one cloud environment shared by all and managed with CloudFormation.

Implementing OpenAPI and GraphQL services with gRPCTim Burks
Behind every API there's code. REST and GraphQL are powerful interface abstractions but are not so great for writing code (we’re still looking for the programming language where every command is a GET, POST, PUT, or DELETE). When programmers work, they are usually making function calls, and an RPC framework like gRPC allows those functions to be written in a mixture of languages and distributed among many servers. This means that gRPC can be a great way to implement REST and GraphQL APIs at scale. We’ll share open source projects from Google that can be used to implement OpenAPI and GraphQL services with gRPC and give you hands-on experience with both.

Implementing OpenAPI and GraphQL Services with gRPC
Tim Burks, Software Engineer at Google
GraphQL is an emerging API standard that provides a more flexible and alternative approach for data intensive operations. It is particularly good for querying and retrieving data in optimized forms that make applications more efficient and optimal. While GraphQL focuses on what it does best, we still need to ensure that our GraphQL services are exposed in a secure, controlled, monitored, and sometimes even in a monetized environment. This is where the inclusion of an API gateway that understands GraphQL queries, mutations, and subscriptions can add significant value.
This deck explores the following:
- Introduction to GraphQL
- Exposing GraphQL services as managed APIs
- Authentication
- Authorization
- Rate limiting
- Invoking GraphQL APIs exposed via WSO2 API Manager

Amazon API Gateway is a fully managed service that makes it easy for developers to create, publish, maintain, monitor, and secure APIs at any scale. With a few clicks in the AWS Management Console, you can create an API that acts as a “front door” for applications to access data, business logic, or functionality from your back-end services, such as workloads running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), code running on AWS Lambda, or any Web application.

GlueCon 2015 - How REST APIs can glue all types of devices togetherRestlet
An exploding variety of devices need to communicate with the software you're developing today or soon in the future. What's your plan to handle access from mobile phones, thermostats, heart rate monitors, health and temp sensors, desktop computers, tablets, smart watches, and more? The key to gluing everything together is to use APIs. Data and code logic can be published as APIs, making your application much more flexible. In this session, Jerome will do a technical deep into how to use open source and free to-use tools for API design, development, management, deployment, version control, and documentation. He will also explain the acute problem with API management today, evolution, and future direction.
Automating SDK generation - London Mobile Forum 2.0Thong Nguyen
A talk given at London Mobile Form 2.0 on Automating SDK generation.
If you are writing your mobile apps using multiple languages then automating SDK generation using codegen can bridge the gap between the backend and your front end clients; helping you develop your mobile apps far more rapidly. Remote Procedures should not be any harder to call than local calls and your mobile front-end developers should not need to know manually write networking or serialisation code.
By integrating such codegen tools into your automated (CI) development process, the resistance to adding new APIs and features is essentially removed. Your front-end and back-end teams can add features far more rapidly than they could before.
GraphQL is an application layer query language from Facebook. With GraphQL, you can define your backend as a well-defined graph-based schema. Then client applications can query your dataset as they are needed. GraphQL’s power comes from a simple idea — instead of defining the structure of responses on the server, the flexibility is given to the client. Will GraphQL do to REST what REST did to SOAP?

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*

2. API History 101
• Do we really need
GraphQL?
• Technology is always
providing developers
new solutions to
existing problems
• Lets step back and
understand how we got
here
3. API 1.0 a.k.a SOA
• API interface represent the
“contract” (ie WSDL) created by
the API Provider
• API Provider: exposes contract to
API consumer
• API Consumer: tries to consume
service based on “contract”
4. API 1.0 - SOA
Advantage: API Provider
API Provider API Consumer
• API Provider controls the
service interface
• API Consumer does not have
much input into the design
of the “contract”
5. API 2.0 a.k.a REST
• API interface is
represented by modern
contract (ie “OpenAPI”)
• API Provider: exposes
RESTful interface
• API Consumer: self-service
discovery via developer
portals & simplified
consumption
6. API 2.0 - REST
Advantage: Tie
• API Provider provides
simpler interface of service
implementation
• API Consumer able to self-
discover and use modern
standards to invoke API
7. API 3.0 a.k.a
GraphQL
• Query language and
implementation paradigm
for data-centric APIs
• API Consumer define the
data they need (and
nothing more)
• API Provider: Handles
complexity of obtaining
data from backend
systems
8. API 3.0 - GraphQL
Advantage: API
Consumer
• API Consumer maintains
control over the data
independent of the data
structure within backend
systems
9. GraphQL vs REST
§ In GraphQL, profiles, or resource access
rules depend on the query:
POST ../graphql
{ me { name, age }}
POST ../graphql
mutation {
createK8Cluster (name: "c1"){
clusterId
}
}
vs.
GET …/profiles/me
vs.
POST …/resources/k8cluster
§ In REST APIs, profiles, or resource access
rules are defined for endpoints:
Q: Is GraphQL replacing REST?
A: No. REST APIs are well-defined interfaces with standard error codes, easily
cached and optimized for the HTTP protocol.
GraphQL provides an alternative query-based approach, optimized for data-
intensive operations
10. GraphQL
Endpoints
• Single GraphQL transaction
may invoke multiple backends
POST /sports/graphql? HTTP/1.1
query {
Players (name: "John T") {
name
league
team {
name
arena {
name
…
}
city
}
}
}
Server
1. GET …/players/
2. GET …/team/player.name=?
3. GET …/arena/team.name=?
11. Understanding
Queries
• What can we learn from
other query languages (ie
SQL)
• How can a “Bad Query”
from an API consumer
overwhelm backend
systems
• Bad queries can be
malicious (ie SQL
Injection) or unintentional
(bad programming)
Select * From Transactions
SELECT cust.name, address.name, …. {infinite
attributes}
FROM cust, address, … {infinite tables},
WHERE cust.name = address.name AND …. {infinite
joins}
Selecting all data from a database
Complex and nested queries with multiple table joins
12. Throttling &
Rate Limits
• Throttling: Protect backends when
system usage spike
• Single transaction can trigger
multiple nested backend calls on
GraphQL server
• Manage transaction calls based on
backend service calls to reflect
compute time
• Rate Limits: Consumer X is allowed
access to Y transactions
Server
16. Threat
Protection
• Detect and reject requests with
complex nesting
• Pre-calculate load to determine if
query will overwhelm backends
• GitHub GraphQL API uses a point
system to individually calculate cost
for different query parameters
18. API Plans (2 of 2)
PREMIUM
GOLD
Levels = 10
Levels = 100
19. Summary
• GraphQL enables API
consumer to easily
retrieve data from data-
intensive services
• GraphQL management
requires insight into the
impact of a query on
backend systems
• API Management of
GraphQL APIs enables
differentiated API plans &
new threat protection
policies
