From Storytelling to Story-playing
Intertextuality and Contexts of Production in Game Adaptation
This paper proposal is based on a study of game production in the context of cross-media strategies, and follows the adaptation journey of the Muddle Earth IP from a children’s book, into a BBC TV series, and finally into a game.
The research looks at the text and its production, drawing on empirical data from game-playing, interviews with producers and the analysis of design and production documents.
Game adaptations of narratives from other media are based not just hypertextually on their source texts, but also intertextually on other games and games conventions. Besides textual influences, game adaptations are also strongly shaped by ‘extratextual’ conditions of production (budgets, technology, editorial guidelines), all of which influence the ways in which game adaptations translate existing narratives.
The paper explores how storytelling devices in games both remediate older forms of media, but also create new ways of telling (or playing) stories. In this process, different source narrative elements are reused, enhanced or discarded – and mixed with ludic elements – through decisions shaped by commercial, editorial and other criteria, which ultimately define the final game text.
Steering away from outdated notions of ‘fidelity’ in adaptation studies, the paper proposes the concept of ‘brand consistency’ as an essential requirement of cross-media strategies, to achieve seamless audience experiences and maximize IP audiences across media.
The theoretical framework is derived from game studies, adaptation studies, intertextuality theory, narrative theory, and political economy.
Hybrid Publishing Lab - Contec - Frankfurt Book Fair. Oct 2013Simon Worthington
The Hybrid Publishing Consortium is the technology arm of the lab and is made up of a team of six researchers, developing software for multi-format publishing. The Consortium has two goals–creating robust public infrastructures for publishing and lowering the cost of digital innovation for publishers.
We employ a dual approached to digital workflows to achieve these goals–single source and dynamic publishing.
Single source publishing
Single source is the key to unlocking multi-format conversion, allowing for conversion to almost any format, like converting to formats for–eReaders, tablets or print-on-demand.
For most publishers multi-format publishing is still a nightmare. The technology available is either inefficient or too expensive.
How does single source work? At the core its about document structure. Firstly having a document that is machine readable. Secondly using open standards to keep the document components separate–content, layout and metadata. This way they can be independently edited or made use of by a user or computational process.
In partnership with the company LShift we are developing a single source software framework, called, Academic Typesetr, based on LShift’s existing technology. LShift are one of the top software companies from London’s, Tech City.
For the system our design mantra is, ‘leave the user in their natural habitat’. For the writer this is Word or Google Docs and for the graphic designer, InDesign.
Academic Typesetr will be released as Free Software before the end of the year, with the lab running a series of dynamic publishing prototypes over 2014.
Dynamic publishing
Once you have a machine readable document, then you can start further automation of the workflow–distribution, rights management, and reading analytics–to name a few areas.
With automated distribution the idea of ‘publishing-on-demand’ is introduced, where the user makes a request to a repository via an API to access content for reuse and re-mixing. The user can be a library or Web 2.0 reading platform. This model enables bulk distribution into teaching and education for the BYOD market. An example being the US publisher, Flat World Knowledge.
We view dynamic publishing as a place where scholars and publishers can finally turn the corner with digital publishing, to access new audiences and new revenues.
Managing and Monitoring Application PerformanceSebastian Marek
Writing your application is one thing. Making the application to perform well is another. We usually forget there is somebody else on the other side of the screen, that becomes very frustrated and upset when he needs to wait until this one page finally loads. It requires a lot of experience to predict specific behaviour and to know what kind of things to avoid. And even with that there is so many different factors that can affect the end user experience. During this talk I will talk about tools and techniques you can use to measure and monitor your application performance.

perut bagian bawah kanan. Klien berkata, setiap kali
dia buang air besar, nyerinya terasa ringan. Klien juga
mengatakan dia sering muntah, tidak nafsu
makan, sembelit.
berlebihan. Klien berkata dia merasa takut dengan
penyakitnya, dan klien juga takut jangan sampai
penyakitnya dapat menyebabkan kematian
4. B. DIAGNOSA KEPERAWATAN
a. Resiko berkurangnya volume cairan berhubungan
dengan adanya rasa mual dan muntah.
b. Resiko terjadinya infeksi berhubungan dengan
tidak adekuatnya pertahanan tubuh.
c. Nyeri berhubungan dengan distensi jaringan
intestinal.
d. Kurangnya pengetahuan tentang proses
penyakitnya berhubungan dengan informasi
kurang.
5. C. PERENCANAAN
Rencana tujuan dan intervensi disesuaikan dengan
diagnosis dan prioritas masalah keperawatan.
a. Resiko kekurangan volume cairan berhubungan dengan
adanya rasa mual dan muntah, ditandai dengan :
• Kadang-kadang diare.
• Distensi abdomen.
• Tegang.
• Nafsu makan berkurang.
• Ada rasa mual dan muntah.
6. 1. Tujuan : Mempertahankan keseimbangan volume cairan dengan kriteria :
• Klien tidak diare.
• Nafsu makan baik.
• Klien tidak mual dan muntah.
2. Intervensi :
a. Monitor tanda-tanda vital.
Rasional :
Merupakan indicator secara dini tentang hypovolemia.
b. Monitor intake dan out put dan konsentrasi urine.
Rasional :
• Frekuensi pernapasan meningkat.
• Distensi abdomen.
• Nyeri tekan daerah titik Mc. Burney
• Leuco > 10.000/mm3
panas, kemerahan).
8. 2. Intervensi :
a. Bersihkan lapangan operasi dari beberapa organisme yang
mungkin ada melalui prinsip-prinsip pencukuran.
Rasional :
timbulnya mikro organisme.
d. HE tentang pentingnya kebersihan diri klien.
Rasional :
Burney
• Gelisah.
• Klien mengeluh rasa sakit pada perut bagian kanan bawah.
1. Tujuan : Rasa nyeri akan teratasi dengan kriteria :
Pernapasan normal.
Sirkulasi normal.
11. 2. Intervensi :
a. Kaji tingkat nyeri, lokasi dan karasteristik nyeri.
Rasional :
Untuk mengetahui sejauh mana tingkat nyeri dan
merupakan indiaktor secara dini untuk dapat
memberikan tindakan selanjutnya.
b. Anjurkan pernapasan dalam.
Rasional :
Pernapasan yang dalam dapat menghirup O2
secara adekuat sehingga otot-otot menjadi
relaksasi sehingga dapat mengurangi rasa nyeri.
12. c. Lakukan gate control.
Rasional :
Dengan gate control saraf yang berdiameter besar
merangsang saraf yang berdiameter kecil sehingga
rangsangan nyeri tidak diteruskan ke hypothalamus.
b. Beri analgetik.
Rasional :
Sebagai profilaksis untuk dapat menghilangkan rasa nyeri
(apabila sudah mengetahui gejala pasti).
13. 4. Kurangnya pengetahuan tentang proses penyakitnya
berhubungan dengan informasi kurang.
• Gelisah.
• Wajah murung.
• Klien sering menanyakan tentang penyakitnya.
• Klien mengeluh rasa sakit.
• Klien mengeluh sulit tidur
1. Tujuan : Klien akan memahami manfaat perawatan post
operatif dan pengobatannya.
14. 2. Intervensi :
a. Jelaskan pada klien tentang latihan-latihan yang akan
digunakan setelah operasi.
Rasional :
Klien dapat memahami dan dapat merencanakan serta
dapat melaksanakan setelah operasi, sehingga dapat
mengembalikan fungsi-fungsi optimal alat-alat tubuh.
b. Menganjurkan aktivitas yang progresif dan sabar
menghadapi periode istirahat setelah operasi.
Rasional :
Mencegah luka baring dan dapat mempercepat
penyembuhan.
15. c. Disukusikan kebersihan insisi yang meliputi
pergantian verband, pembatasan mandi, dan
penyembuhan latihan.
Rasional :
Mengerti dan mau bekerja sama melalui
teraupeutik dapat mempercepat proses
penyembuhan.
