APA format 2 pages with 3 refences 2 from walden university library Due Friday June 30,2017 at 2200 For this discussion, I decided to search for quantitative research studies on depression in the college freshman. After searching the Walden database, I found multiple articles but selected two. First Article The first article discusses the role of family support in college freshman, leading to their depression. For this study, the researchers used a descriptive research approach. A descriptive research is used to “observe, describe and document aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs and sometimes to serve as a starting point for hypothesis generation or theory development (Polit&Beck,2017, pg 206).” More specifically, I would classify this study as a descriptive correlation research. This means that the study was designed based off diagnosis and assessment questions (Polit, et al. 2017, pg 206). During this study, the participants filled out two questionnaires for the researchers. The first questionnaire was about their demographics and the second was about their depressive symptoms and family support (Levens, Elrahal, Sagui, 2016, pg 4). After analyzing the data collected, the researchers discovered that under stress, those who had family support developed less depressive symptoms (Livens, et al. 2016). I believe that the descriptive correlation research was the most appropriate research approach for this study. This allowed the researchers to compare the data and develop a result. Second Article The second article I found involved 308 college freshmen. The research was done to determine if adult attachment, social self-efficacy, self-disclosure and loneliness lead to depression. This study was also a descriptive correlation study. To obtain the results the researchers had the participants answer a survey. The survey was based off The Experiences in Close Relationship Scale and had answers ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree (Wei, Russell, Zakalik, 2005, pg 4). This survey was used to measure romantic relationships, fear of abandonment and rejection along with avoidance of intimacy, discomfort with closeness and self-reliance. This helped the researchers measure self-efficiency, self-disclosure and loneliness. The results of the study showed that social self-efficiency plays a factor in anxiety, loneliness and depression in college freshmen (Wei, et al. 2005). I believe that the researchers of this article used the correct research method. By having the participants fill out a survey, they could measure how many college freshmen felt socially self-efficient and how many did not, which may have led to their anxiety, loneliness and depression. Baras and Toro (1999) sought to assess the social support of homeless populations by using two
commonly used instruments: The Interpersonal Support Evaluation (ISEL) and the Social Network
Interview (SNL). In comparing the instruments, the ISEL was found to be useful in indicating a
participant’s psychological well-being, while the SNL helped to assess stress-buffering effects.
More details regarding the instrument items would have been more helpful for the use of this
paper. However, the study’s results substantiate the concept that the presence of social support
for the homeless should support physical and psychological health in the way that it cushions the
effects of stressful events. These instruments yielded results indicating that larger nonfamily
social networks are a predictor for recurring homelessness, as well as mental illness.

three most frequently used drugs among homeless women. The impact of social networks on
adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms that influence drug use were measured through a
version of the Jalowiec Coping Scale, part of a multi-item instrument. Depression, current drug
use, drug problems and physical drug dependence were assessed, in other parts of the
instrument. Current drug use was found to predict negative social support, depression and less
use of positive coping strategies. Homelessness may diminish a woman’s capability to establish
and maintain positive social support. This article was very informative in that it gives clearly

mechanisms for homeless children. Many of the child participants were resilient despite

possessions, these children often engaged in fantastical play that portrayed one particular

methods used in this study are primarily interviewing and observation, and were part of an

For my final project I am choosing the environmental influences on personality particularly about childhood experiences and their effect on an individual’s personalities. I am contrasting childhood experiences that are caused by their environment to the effect on their personality, I will use the correlation research method. A questionnaire will be used in order to obtain the information I would need. This method would admit me to have a larger sample base, have a better image of the relationship, and numerous variables providing for better research circumstances down the road. The disadvantage to this technique would be, I would not have a personal relationship from those apart of the study and this could cause a lack of dishonesty. Second, establishing a questionnaire that was both dependable and accurate could be an issue. Lastly, I would only get a view at what those in the group went through.
Ethically, I would run into a problem of confidentiality and making sure all of the questionnaires were kept secret and those taking them were offered secrecy. Anyone who take part in the activity would be able to eliminate themselves from the research if they wanted to and if they left the documents it would be destroyed. I would maintain their best interest and would be real and honest with them regarding what the study is being used for and why it was being done. Still, because there isn’t a personal relationship but just general on this could be difficult to prove and cause doubt and that could be an ethical crisis.

There are various definitions of self-esteem as described by different authors in the field of psychological research. It can also be defined as the general or typical feeling that an individual has about himself in a certain context and time (Heimpel et al., 2006). Andreassen et al. (2017), stated that self-esteem is an individual’s sense of worth or the level at which an individual likes or values himself. Self-esteem is individuals’ personal evaluation regarding their capabilities, importance, value, or worth (Pizzolli & Strapparava, 2019). Personality refers to the consistent set of behaviors that form a person’s distinctive character. These behaviors have emotional and cognitive patterns that have unique characteristics. An individual’s self-esteem is largely determined by their inherent personality traits, which include extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness (Pizzolli & Strapparava, 2019). Previous research has linked personality with self-esteem but didn’t establish the extent to which self-esteem is influenced by personality. This research seeks to establish how individual personality traits influence an individual’s self-esteem.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this research is to establish the relationship between personality and self-esteem and determine the extent to which personality traits can be used to predict an individual’s level of self-esteem. The personality traits, which include extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, are usually referred to as the Big Five and are described in the five personality traits model. Each trait individually affects an individual’s self-esteem, but the most dominant traits determine an individual’s level of self-esteem.
Significance of the Study
Understanding the relationship between personality and self-esteem is important because it would enable psychologists to establish the psychological outcomes associated with various personality traits which would be helpful in the prediction of outcomes such as personality disorders, job performance, divorce, and academic achievement. Also, personality traits determine the temperament level of an individual and their overall behavioral tendencies. For example, individuals with low temperament are likely to be negative about themselves, thus, have low self-esteem. The findings of this study would enable therapists to precisely predict the patient outcomes based on their personality traits and understand the type of therapy that would suit their personality. For instance, individuals with low self-esteem may not respond to therapeutic sessions that are offered in group sessions since they cannot actively participate in that context.

Depression affects over 20% of adolescents. It is a disorder that disturbs their mood,
causes a loss of interest or pleasure in activities they should enjoy, and makes them
irritable. Several things are thought to be correlated with depression in adolescents.
Some examples include, a failure to individuate, insecure attachments, negative parental
representations, etc (Milne & Lancaster, 2001; Olsson, Nordstrom, Arinell, & Knor-
ring, 1999). In the present paper, the role of attachment plays in adolescent depression
is investigated. It is hypothesized that insecurely attached adolescents, (ambivalent or
avoidant), will display higher levels of depression related symptoms and behaviors than
securely attached adolescents. The following five literature review attempt to demon-
strate and support this hypothesis.
In a research article by Salzman (1996), two specific questions were addressed for guid-
ing the study. First, would the age group (18-21) being investigated correspond in fre-
quency and quality to attachment patterns reported by other researchers? Second, would
personality characteristics of secure adolescent attachments correlate with personality
characteristics of infant and child studies? The focus of the investigation was on
late adolescent female attachment patterns, specifically maternal, using a semi
structured interview. It is hypothesized that secretly attached females will have a
strong positive identification with their mother, higher self-esteem ratings, and lower
depression scores, wile ambivalent and avoidant females will have a more negative
identification with their mother, lower self-esteem ratings, and higher depressions scores.
The sample consisted originally of 1001 random psychology students at a college, but
through screening procedures and the importance to have approximately equal numbers
in all categories of attachment, it was reduced to 28 who were used in the study.

From the results, the researches show the importance of family and friends in enhancing the recovery of people living with mental challenges. How fast or slowly people recover from mental health issues is dependent majorly on the social support they get from friends and family. These are the closest people that the patient has with them. The findings from the five studies brought out a great insight into the role played by family and friends in helping people with different mental disorders like depression.
The results supported the primary hypothesis that family and friends have been the most important components in supporting the people suffering from mental health problems. From the sampled research articles, social support for those with mental disorders is majorly provided by family and friends. People who have mental issues and lack social support take long to recover even when therapies are being undertaken. They also find it hard to associate with other people. By looking at the university students presented by Alsubaie et al (2020), family and friends support can evade people from mental health challenges. From the sample, the university students who have mental health issues lack social support from their families and friends. These students end up in depression and stress which becomes a major setback to their mental health. Additionally, those who have mental health issues take long time to recover when they lack social support.
Lack of social support is majorly quantified as stigmatization. People with mental health problems feel stigmatized and left out of families and friends groups if these people are not close to them. These people may sometimes feel like they are not accepted. The feeling of being segregated makes them think more of their mental conditions resulting into more instances of depression. The preference for mental health issues among those who receive social support from their families and friends is very low. This shows that the families and friends have a great role to play in mental health of those either with mental disorders or those at risk of getting these diseases. This help should be rendered at all times to increase the rate of recovery for those already affected. One of the best ways of reducing the instances of new mental health issues in the community is by offering social support to those already suffering from these disorders in order to recover faster. Additionally, when those in the verge of getting these disorders, especially the adolescents and the young adults are given this support, their chances of getting the disorders will be low and in that case, the community will be safe from mental disorders. The results thus support the hypothesis that of the research that family and friends support is important for mental health.

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between depression from heartbreak and the effects of cognitive development, more specifically, reaction time in individuals who range from 14-24 years of age. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were used to examine school-level
differences in the relations between school belonging and various outcomes. In Study 1, predictors of
belonging were examined. Results indicated that belonging was lower in urban schools than in suburban
schools, and lower in schools that used busing practices than those that did not. In Study 2, the relations
between belonging and psychological outcomes were examined. The relations varied depending on the
unit of analysis (individual vs. aggregated measures of belonging). Whereas individual students’
perceptions of belonging were inversely related to depression, social rejection, and school problems,
aggregated belonging was related to greater reports of social rejection and school problems and to higher
grade point average.
Research on school-level differences during adolescence often
has focused on nonpsychological outcomes, such as academic
achievement and behavioral issues, instead of on psychological
outcomes (Roeser, 1998). Indeed, research on school-level differ-
ences in nonacademic variables is quite rare. The purpose of the
present research was to examine school-level differences in a
variety of psychological outcomes, using a large nationally repre-
sentative sample of adolescents.
School Effects on Student Outcomes
Although there is an abundant literature on effective schools,
most of the research in this literature has focused on academic
variables, such as achievement, dropping out, and grade point
average (GPA; e.g., Edmonds, 1979; Miller, 1985; Murphy, Weil,
Hallinger, & Mitman, 1985). This literature generally indicates
that schools that are academically effective have certain recogniz-
able characteristics.
Some of these studies have examined differences between pub-
lic schools and other types of schools. For example, some research
indicates that students who attend public schools achieve more
academically than do students who attend other types of schools
(e.g., Coleman & Hoffer, 1987). Other research suggests that there
may be a benefit in terms of academic achievement for students
who attend Catholic schools compared with non-Catholic schools
(Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). Lee and her colleagues (Lee,
Chow-Hoy, Burkam, Geverdt, & Smerdon, 1998) found that stu-
dents who attended private schools took more advanced math
courses than did students who attended public schools. However,
they also found specific benefits for Catholic schools: Specifically,
in Catholic schools, there was greater school influence on the
courses that students took, and the social distribution of course
enrollment was found to be particularly equitable.

I am contrasting childhood experiences that are caused by their environment to the effect on their personality, I will use the correlation research method. A questionnaire will be used in order to obtain the information I would need. This method would admit me to have a larger sample base, have a better image of the relationship, and numerous variables providing for better research circumstances down the road. The disadvantage to this technique would be, I would not have a personal relationship from those apart of the study and this could cause a lack of dishonesty. Second, establishing a questionnaire that was both dependable and accurate could be an issue. Lastly, I would only get a view at what those in the group went through.
Ethically, I would run into a problem of confidentiality and making sure all of the questionnaires were kept secret and those taking them were offered secrecy. Anyone who take part in the activity would be able to eliminate themselves from the research if they wanted to and if they left the documents it would be destroyed. I would maintain their best interest and would be real and honest with them regarding what the study is being used for and why it was being done. Still, because there isn’t a personal relationship but just general on this could be difficult to prove and cause doubt and that could be an ethical crisis.

There are various definitions of self-esteem as described by different authors in the field of psychological research. It can also be defined as the general or typical feeling that an individual has about himself in a certain context and time (Heimpel et al., 2006). Andreassen et al. (2017), stated that self-esteem is an individual’s sense of worth or the level at which an individual likes or values himself. Self-esteem is individuals’ personal evaluation regarding their capabilities, importance, value, or worth (Pizzolli & Strapparava, 2019). Personality refers to the consistent set of behaviors that form a person’s distinctive character. These behaviors have emotional and cognitive patterns that have unique characteristics. An individual’s self-esteem is largely determined by their inherent personality traits, which include extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness (Pizzolli & Strapparava, 2019). Previous research has linked personality with self-esteem but didn’t establish the extent to which self-esteem is influenced by personality. This research seeks to establish how individual personality traits influence an individual’s self-esteem.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this research is to establish the relationship between personality and self-esteem and determine the extent to which personality traits can be used to predict an individual’s level of self-esteem. The personality traits, which include extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, are usually referred to as the Big Five and are described in the five personality traits model. Each trait individually affects an individual’s self-esteem, but the most dominant traits determine an individual’s level of self-esteem.
Significance of the Study
Understanding the relationship between personality and self-esteem is important because it would enable psychologists to establish the psychological outcomes associated with various personality traits which would be helpful in the prediction of outcomes such as personality disorders, job performance, divorce, and academic achievement. Also, personality traits determine the temperament level of an individual and their overall behavioral tendencies. For example, individuals with low temperament are likely to be negative about themselves, thus, have low self-esteem. The findings of this study would enable therapists to precisely predict the patient outcomes based on their personality traits and understand the type of therapy that would suit their personality. For instance, individuals with low self-esteem may not respond to therapeutic sessions that are offered in group sessions since they cannot actively participate in that context.

Depression affects over 20% of adolescents. It is a disorder that disturbs their mood,
causes a loss of interest or pleasure in activities they should enjoy, and makes them
irritable. Several things are thought to be correlated with depression in adolescents.
Some examples include, a failure to individuate, insecure attachments, negative parental
representations, etc (Milne & Lancaster, 2001; Olsson, Nordstrom, Arinell, & Knor-
ring, 1999). In the present paper, the role of attachment plays in adolescent depression
is investigated. It is hypothesized that insecurely attached adolescents, (ambivalent or
avoidant), will display higher levels of depression related symptoms and behaviors than
securely attached adolescents. The following five literature review attempt to demon-
strate and support this hypothesis.
In a research article by Salzman (1996), two specific questions were addressed for guid-
ing the study. First, would the age group (18-21) being investigated correspond in fre-
quency and quality to attachment patterns reported by other researchers? Second, would
personality characteristics of secure adolescent attachments correlate with personality
characteristics of infant and child studies? The focus of the investigation was on
late adolescent female attachment patterns, specifically maternal, using a semi
structured interview. It is hypothesized that secretly attached females will have a
strong positive identification with their mother, higher self-esteem ratings, and lower
depression scores, wile ambivalent and avoidant females will have a more negative
identification with their mother, lower self-esteem ratings, and higher depressions scores.
The sample consisted originally of 1001 random psychology students at a college, but
through screening procedures and the importance to have approximately equal numbers
in all categories of attachment, it was reduced to 28 who were used in the study.

The contribution of friends and family in mental health is crucial. From the results, the researches show the importance of family and friends in enhancing the recovery of people living with mental challenges. How fast or slowly people recover from mental health issues is dependent majorly on the social support they get from friends and family. These are the closest people that the patient has with them. The findings from the five studies brought out a great insight into the role played by family and friends in helping people with different mental disorders like depression.
The results supported the primary hypothesis that family and friends have been the most important components in supporting the people suffering from mental health problems. From the sampled research articles, social support for those with mental disorders is majorly provided by family and friends. People who have mental issues and lack social support take long to recover even when therapies are being undertaken. They also find it hard to associate with other people. By looking at the university students presented by Alsubaie et al (2020), family and friends support can evade people from mental health challenges. From the sample, the university students who have mental health issues lack social support from their families and friends. These students end up in depression and stress which becomes a major setback to their mental health. Additionally, those who have mental health issues take long time to recover when they lack social support.
Lack of social support is majorly quantified as stigmatization. People with mental health problems feel stigmatized and left out of families and friends groups if these people are not close to them. These people may sometimes feel like they are not accepted. The feeling of being segregated makes them think more of their mental conditions resulting into more instances of depression. The preference for mental health issues among those who receive social support from their families and friends is very low. This shows that the families and friends have a great role to play in mental health of those either with mental disorders or those at risk of getting these diseases. This help should be rendered at all times to increase the rate of recovery for those already affected. One of the best ways of reducing the instances of new mental health issues in the community is by offering social support to those already suffering from these disorders in order to recover faster. Additionally, when those in the verge of getting these disorders, especially the adolescents and the young adults are given this support, their chances of getting the disorders will be low and in that case, the community will be safe from mental disorders. The results thus support the hypothesis that of the research that family and friends support is important for mental health.

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between depression from heartbreak and the effects of cognitive development, more specifically, reaction time in individuals who range from 14-24 years of age. Research on school-level differences during adolescence often
has focused on nonpsychological outcomes, such as academic
achievement and behavioral issues, instead of on psychological
outcomes (Roeser, 1998). Indeed, research on school-level differ-
ences in nonacademic variables is quite rare. The purpose of the
present research was to examine school-level differences in a
variety of psychological outcomes, using a large nationally repre-
sentative sample of adolescents.
School Effects on Student Outcomes
Although there is an abundant literature on effective schools,
most of the research in this literature has focused on academic
variables, such as achievement, dropping out, and grade point
average (GPA; e.g., Edmonds, 1979; Miller, 1985; Murphy, Weil,
Hallinger, & Mitman, 1985). This literature generally indicates
that schools that are academically effective have certain recogniz-
able characteristics.
Some of these studies have examined differences between pub-
lic schools and other types of schools. For example, some research
indicates that students who attend public schools achieve more
academically than do students who attend other types of schools
(e.g., Coleman & Hoffer, 1987). Other research suggests that there
may be a benefit in terms of academic achievement for students
who attend Catholic schools compared with non-Catholic schools
(Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). Lee and her colleagues (Lee,
Chow-Hoy, Burkam, Geverdt, & Smerdon, 1998) found that stu-
dents who attended private schools took more advanced math
courses than did students who attended public schools. However,
they also found specific benefits for Catholic schools: Specifically,
in Catholic schools, there was greater school influence on the
courses that students took, and the social distribution of course
enrollment was found to be particularly equitable.
In recent years, psychologists have started to become interested
in the effects of schooling on mental health outcomes (e.g., Boe-
kaerts, 1993; Cowen, 1991; Roeser, Eccles, & Strobel, 1998;

Abstract: Parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a life-long developmental disorder, responded to an online survey considering their stress experience, affective symptoms and marital satisfaction. As these parents sourced different programs for their children, type of program was used to assign parents to different groups in order to consider their stress, affective symptoms and marital satisfaction. The type of programs parents used included the Applied Behaviour Analysis (n=15); Early Intervention Centre (n=13) and no formal program (n=16). Parents of children with ASD in the ABA group reported significantly lower parental stress scores, lower affective symptoms scores and higher marital satisfaction scores compared to the other two groups. APA format 2 pages with 3 refences 2 from walden university library Due Friday June 30,2017 at 2200 For this discussion, I decided to search for quantitative research studies on depression in the college freshman. After searching the Walden database, I found multiple articles but selected two. First Article The first article discusses the role of family support in college freshman, leading to their depression. For this study, the researchers used a descriptive research approach. A descriptive research is used to “observe, describe and document aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs and sometimes to serve as a starting point for hypothesis generation or theory development (Polit&Beck,2017, pg 206).” More specifically, I would classify this study as a descriptive correlation research. This means that the study was designed based off diagnosis and assessment questions (Polit, et al. 2017, pg 206). During this study, the participants filled out two questionnaires for the researchers. The first questionnaire was about their demographics and the second was about their depressive symptoms and family support (Levens, Elrahal, Sagui, 2016, pg 4). After analyzing the data collected, the researchers discovered that under stress, those who had family support developed less depressive symptoms (Livens, et al. 2016). I believe that the descriptive correlation research was the most appropriate research approach for this study. This allowed the researchers to compare the data and develop a result. Second Article The second article I found involved 308 college freshmen. The research was done to determine if adult attachment, social self- efficacy, self-disclosure and loneliness lead to depression. This study was also a descriptive correlation study. To obtain the results the researchers had the participants answer a survey. The survey was based off The Experiences in Close Relationship Scale and had answers ranging from strongly disagree to
- 2. strongly agree (Wei, Russell, Zakalik, 2005, pg 4). This survey was used to measure romantic relationships, fear of abandonment and rejection along with avoidance of intimacy, discomfort with closeness and self-reliance. This helped the researchers measure self-efficiency, self-disclosure and loneliness. The results of the study showed that social self- efficiency plays a factor in anxiety, loneliness and depression in college freshmen (Wei, et al. 2005). I believe that the researchers of this article used the correct research method. By having the participants fill out a survey, they could measure how many college freshmen felt socially self-efficient and how many did not, which may have led to their anxiety, loneliness and depression.
