Anthony the Great was a Christian monk in Egypt in the 3rd-4th century CE who is considered the founder of monasticism. He gave away his possessions to live as an ascetic and helped other hermits in the desert in their spiritual lives. Though he attracted many disciples and helped establish some monastic communities, he preferred a solitary hermit life himself, retiring deep into the desert near the Red Sea. His biography helped spread the concept of monasticism throughout Christianity.
