Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Gausemeier (Chairman)
In a dynamic, competitive arena, businesses
need to act strategically and continuously
reinvent themselves. Developments in markets,
business environments and technologies as well
as the progressive digitalization of the economy
are creating promising opportunities for success.
Two aspects are of particular importance to our
customers: innovative and strategic products,
services and business models, as well as
efficiency in their operative business.
UNITY is continuously at the forefront of key
areas such as Industrie 4.0, data-driven services,
business model innovations, systems engineering
for intelligent networked systems and IT
management. This stems from its close alliance with
the Heinz Nixdorf Institute and the Frauenhofer
Institution for Mechatronic Systems Design as well
as the Leading-Edge Cluster “Intelligent Technical
Systems Ost-WestfalenLippe” (it’s OWL). This
collaboration results in valuable knowledge
regarding new technologies and their possible
applications – technologies that will create
new markets and decisively shape the service
offerings of tomorrow. UNITY will always be a
particularly attractive partner in regards to the
strategic development of a company, as well as

The Executive Board, March 2018
We can look back on a very successful fiscal
year in 2016/2017: With 28% growth and €36
million in revenue both in Germany and abroad.
UNITY continues to advance in the consulting
market. We are profiting from a combined
favorable economic environment, increasing
uncertainty in a volatile world and the need
for business and industry to modernize that is
driven by digitalization. Many companies and
organizations are adapting their business models,
products, processes or organizational structures
to meet digital requirements and therefore need
consulting support.
Our positioning as the management consultancy
for innovation and digital transformation is well
received by UNITY customers. We deliver much
more than just buzzwords and strategies. UNITY
consultants design and implement new business
models and excellent business processes. They
also utilize the opportunities that the latest digital
technologies provide. We are proud of the fact
that many of our customers are digital leaders in
their industries.
Digital transformation is also presenting UNITY
with challenges. Our new company focus is
presented on pages 10 to 15. In addition to our
existing services, we present the services that we
use specifically to shape the digital transformation
of our customers. #UNITYdigitalHub is our new
organizational model that allows us to shape
our consulting business in the context of digital
transformation both quickly and flexibly.
UNITY is valued as an independent source of
impulse in industry that designs cross-hierarchical
organizations and supports the implementation

In collaboration with acatech, the study “IT Plat-
forms for the Smart Service World” and the Matu-
rity Index were developed in 2017. The Maturity
Index enables companies to make an overall
assessment of their Industrie 4.0 maturity level.
In the context of digital transformation, UNITY customers profit not only from the expertise and experience
of our consultants, but also from our comprehensive partner network. This includes research institutions and
projects, universities, companies and associations that are taking on and making progress in digitalization.
Here are some highlights and results of this work:
In the national competition “Digital City,“ the city
of Paderborn achieved 2nd place. With UNITY’s
continued support, the model-region is now imple-
menting its digitalization strategy.
In close cooperation with Prof. Gausemeier (HNI)
and Prof. Dumitrescu (Fraunhofer IEM), we are cur-
rently working on new topics in strategic product
planning and Advanced Systems Engineering.
Based on business model patterns, a tool was
created to develop business models in the context
of Industrie 4.0. The publication of the project was
released in 2017.
Sven-Olaf Schulze, Senior Manager at UNITY,
was re-elected for another two years for his out-
standing achievements as a Chairman of the
Board of the Society for Systems Engineering.
In order for companies to evaluate their perfor-
mance in the area of Industrie 4.0, the research
project INLUMIA released free software that ena-
bles comparisons to other companies.
With € 1.3 million, UNITY is one of the largest
financiers of the Technology Fund OWL. Tomas
Pfänder, member of the UNITY executive board,
is a member of the investment committee.
UNITY has joined the IDSA. This association ad-
vocates international standards in the context of
industrial data space and supports certifiable
software solutions and business models.
Meik Eusterholz, Business Area Leader at UNITY,
has been chosen as a consultant for the “Entschei-
derfabrik” and supports the project “Computer-Inter-
pretable Guidelines – Supporting clinical decisions,
reducing errors, improving clinical results”.
The Leading Edge Cluster, in which UNITY is a core
company, has received continued funding. Based
on the successful work of the past few years, an
additional € 50 million have been approved.

UNITY offers its customers comprehensive consulting for digital change. The
advantage is that key competencies all come from one source. Traditional
consulting approaches, such as pure strategy consulting, fall short of the
complex challenges that digital transformation presents. UNITY, however,
combines an in-depth understanding of technology and the competencies
that are required for successful digital transformation: We innovate,
integrate and transform.
INNOVATOR
We provide impulses for innovation and operative excellence. Together with
our customers, we develop innovative solutions for their digital transformation
such as future-oriented services and products, smart factories or innovative
business models. With our industry, technology and methodology experts,
we put the best teams together to meet our customers‘ needs.
INTEGRATOR
We combine top-down and bottom-up approaches and integrate all the
competencies and hierarchical levels that are necessary for project success.
By working in close cooperation with our customers, we are successful in
operationalizing their strategic goals.
TRANSFORMER
We empower our customers to conduct successful transformation processes
and we support the implementation. UNITY customers particularly
appreciate our hands-on mentality. We empower their teams and are
focused on achieving the individual goals of our customers.

Innovations are an essential prerequisite for sustainable growth at
GEA Group. The new organizational structure “OneGEA” enables the
company to develop innovations beyond locations and functional areas.
GEA had already commissioned UNITY in 2015 to conduct an innovation
inventory for the collection and evaluation of all innovation activities
and structures. Based on the resulting recommendations for action, GEA
began an initiative to develop its global and company-wide innovation
management in mid-2016. This was conducted by UNITY from the
development to the rollout of the innovation program. Among others, a
valid, company-wide innovation process was defined, and methods and
tools to generate and further develop ideas were developed and piloted in
specific projects. In addition, an IT platform was selected, configured and
implemented to support innovation management.
The new innovation organization takes not only the specific characteristics
of 20 organizational units into consideration, but also the requirements of
a central innovation management office. Within the scope of the rollout,
UNITY supported GEA by linking all locations – for example adapting
the organizational model locally, developing and conducting training,
selecting and implementing formats of communication, drawing up initial
idea campaigns, as well as organizing roll-out events.

“We set a very challenging goal for ourselves in the realization of innovation
management across GEA. The expertise of UNITY’s consultants helped us to
start this comprehensive innovation program and process it in a structured
manner. In particular, the use and implementation of innovation tools,

In order to secure and further expand its leading role in the aviation industry
for the future, Lufthansa and UNITY conducted a group-wide foresight
process. Alternative future scenarios were developed through the year 2030
for each of the four business segments: Aviation (consisting of Lufthansa
Passage, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines), Catering
(LSG Sky Chefs), Logistics (Lufthansa Cargo) as well as Bonus Programs
(Miles & More). Based on this, future business opportunities, areas of risk
and customer needs were identified for each individual business segment
and they were used to derive six to ten strategic innovation fields. In the
projects, Lufthansa benefited from the use of the scenario technique which
is a systematic methodology that is used to predict future developments.
This set the foundation for future-oriented strategy development and
innovation planning. Then in phase 2, ideas were generated in a structured
manner and systematic qualification processes for disruptive and highly
promising ideas were established. UNITY supported the innovation process
from creating business cases to developing decision gates. Some of the
ideas have now been fully implemented and successfully introduced to the
market. Moreover, the culture of innovation was further promoted and a
uniform understanding of relevant framework conditions for the future was
created across all business segments.

Digitalization and Industrie 4.0 impact not only production, but most
importantly, the way we will work in the future. When formulating Work
4.0 in regard to content, Miele was primarily concerned with the interaction
of different areas such as competences, work flexibility, society, data
protection, collaboration models and technology. In the scenario project
Work 4.0, Miele profited from the methods and content related impulses
that were provided by UNITY’s foresight and digitalization experts.
Together, the drivers of transformation were successfully identified, thereby
reducing the complexity of this strategic issue. Alternative future possibilities
were subsequently worked out for these drivers and established ways of
thinking were critically questioned. Building upon that, three consistent future
environment scenarios were created. These served as an anchor for further
strategic shaping and communication. Based on internal factors specific to
Miele, such as organizational structure, corporate culture and leadership,
five business scenarios were then created. These scenarios contributed to
defining the concept of Work 4.0. The project team developed a common
vision across varying functions and areas for the year 2025 and aligned
different management perspectives. The course for Work 4.0 has now been
set through nine strategic action areas and specific measures.

RUAG is standardizing support processes in the business areas of
purchasing, finance/controlling and HR to enable shared services and
harmonizing master data management through its group-wide change
program called “Magellan.” The implementation of lean and standardized
processes allows RUAG to enforce the market power by focusing on its
core business. UNITY has been consulting RUAG in the areas of business
transformation and PMO (Project Management Office) since 2015.
This includes, among others, identifying and coordinating dependencies of
individual business streams, roadmap development and coordinating the
critical path. Further tasks include internal communication as a key element
of change management and developing a basis for making decisions for
the steering committee. In addition, UNITY is responsible for all aspects of
the Magellan PMO, including program budgeting and controlling.
After cross-divisional development of process blueprints, the technical
foundation was setup as a SAP S/4 HANA ERP platform with optimized user
interfaces. Then the commonly defined support processes were successfully
implemented for the first division. Now, the path is clear to integrate
additional divisions on this ERP platform with their support and to some
extent their core processes. At the same time, master data management is
being implemented step-by-step and a global HR system for the centralized
management of employee data is being rolled-out.

SHINRY Technologies decision to set up a new factory in Jiading, a
suburban district of Shanghai, is extremely significant as it will enable
SHINRY to meet the immense demands for new energy vehicles in China
and the rest of the world. Simulataneously, SHINRY is using the opportunity
to increase its market share and achieve qualitative progress, as well as
improve product development, operational management, service and other
areas. Already an industry leader in the domestic market for power supply
and control in new energy vehicles, SHINRY is also striving to become a
worldwide industry leader. During project planning of the new factory in
Jiading, UNITY upheld its guiding principles of meeting all possible customer
demands and overcoming challenges in a short period of time. Faced
with a difficult task, UNITY consultants used their expertise and effective
methods for factory planning and based on lean principles, they planned
essential functions such as the production line as well as logistics. UNITY
also introduced new methodologies, new concepts and new perspectives
in advanced production technology and logistics technology. SHINRY
gained valuable knowledge in advanced production management, quality
management skills and future-oriented smart manufacturing.
Furthermore, the implementation of new methods, concepts and perspectives
was integrated when considering the new factory planning. Thus, SHINRY’s
project requirements for planning the new factory were met through
professionalism, foresight and management. The result of the project is of
significant importance for SHINRY in making a step towards their goal
of becoming a worldwide industry leader. UNITY’s professional values of
high efficiency, resilience and innovativeness were proven in this project.

“Healthcare 4.0 is not just a buzzword, it’s the future. We have to prepare
ourselves by developing modern concepts for hospitals – particularly with
regard to the commissioning of the new hospital in Bolzano. Among other
things, we made use of UNITY’s extensive know-how. Together, we have
come a major step closer to our goal of providing patient-centered care
through technological support and networking.”

S. TYROLEAN
HEALTHCARE
SERVICE
The South Tyrolean Healthcare Service
is a network of 7 public hospitals, 20
healthcare districts with more than
10,000 employees. It is responsible
for the medical care of over 520,000
residents in South Tyrol and about
100,000 tourists per day.
The hospital in Bolzano is to become a pioneer for “Digitalization
in Hospitals” so that in the future high quality care for patients can be
guaranteed as well as simultaneously achieving a competitive advantage.
The first step in attaining this goal is the commissioning of a new building
for emergency and acute medicine in late 2018.
UNITY‘s first task was to work with doctors, nurses, medical engineers,
construction planners and IT staff of the South Tyrolean Healthcare Service
to develop a vision for a hospital of the future in South Tyrol. More than
100 trends from the clinical environment were evaluated and identified for
the central hospital in Bolzano through workshops and interviews. One
important finding of the workshops was that, in particular, the networking
of the sectors offers opportunities for new business models and a better
provision of services to citizens. Thus, it is not only a matter of “Hospital
4.0,” rather it is more about the topic of “Health 4.0.” In conclusion, an
implementation roadmap was derived from the common vision.
In addition, the vision was used to derive future demands on the infrastructure.
In turn, the demands were used to evaluate the current construction plan with
regard to its future viability, particularly the aspect of IT infrastructure. UNITY
was able to provide valuable impulses in areas such as: distribution of mobile
services, WLAN and Bluetooth infrastructure, which all have to be taken into
account during the planning and construction phases of the hospital.

Using benefit-oriented and pragmatic approaches that include the entire
organization from structure to culture and processes – this is the core
challenge that companies need to overcome in digital transformation.
Numerous new technologies are making it possible for companies to
improve their own value creation through small- and large-scale digitalization
solutions. It is always important to think of digitalization holistically, as the
integration of upstream and downstream processes creates many benefits.
UNITY was tasked with identifying digitalization potentials along the
end-to-end processes based on selected pilot locations in the steel trade,
and defining specific digitalization projects for rollout across many locations.
Most importantly, an integrative approach was used to ensure the economic
benefits for all of the locations that were taken into consideration. Furthermore,
the requirements necessary for digital transformation were identified.
Finally, a decision-making basis was presented to the management with 14
specific digitalization projects including business cases. This selected
approach ensured fast and visible effects that are in alignment with the
company’s business model and needs.

“Together with UNITY, we were successful in identifying specific digitalization
solutions to optimize value creation that we will implement at our locations in
the future. In this complex project environment, a significant factor for success
was the early involvement of all major participants across many levels of
hierarchy and different areas of the company. Thus, we were successful in
developing concepts that were highly accepted within the organization.”

  • 15. 15 In collaboration with acatech, the study “IT Plat- forms for the Smart Service World” and the Matu- rity Index were developed in 2017. The Maturity Index enables companies to make an overall assessment of their Industrie 4.0 maturity level. In the context of digital transformation, UNITY customers profit not only from the expertise and experience of our consultants, but also from our comprehensive partner network. This includes research institutions and projects, universities, companies and associations that are taking on and making progress in digitalization. Here are some highlights and results of this work: In the national competition “Digital City,“ the city of Paderborn achieved 2nd place. With UNITY’s continued support, the model-region is now imple- menting its digitalization strategy. In close cooperation with Prof. Gausemeier (HNI) and Prof. Dumitrescu (Fraunhofer IEM), we are cur- rently working on new topics in strategic product planning and Advanced Systems Engineering. Based on business model patterns, a tool was created to develop business models in the context of Industrie 4.0. The publication of the project was released in 2017. Sven-Olaf Schulze, Senior Manager at UNITY, was re-elected for another two years for his out- standing achievements as a Chairman of the Board of the Society for Systems Engineering. • 20. Innovations are an essential prerequisite for sustainable growth at GEA Group. The new organizational structure “OneGEA” enables the company to develop innovations beyond locations and functional areas. GEA had already commissioned UNITY in 2015 to conduct an innovation inventory for the collection and evaluation of all innovation activities and structures. Based on the resulting recommendations for action, GEA began an initiative to develop its global and company-wide innovation management in mid-2016. This was conducted by UNITY from the development to the rollout of the innovation program. Among others, a valid, company-wide innovation process was defined, and methods and tools to generate and further develop ideas were developed and piloted in specific projects. In addition, an IT platform was selected, configured and implemented to support innovation management. The new innovation organization takes not only the specific characteristics of 20 organizational units into consideration, but also the requirements of a central innovation management office. Within the scope of the rollout, UNITY supported GEA by linking all locations – for example adapting the organizational model locally, developing and conducting training, selecting and implementing formats of communication, drawing up initial idea campaigns, as well as organizing roll-out events. The international technology group focuses on process technology and components for sophisticated pro- duction processes in various end-user markets. With 17,000 employees worldwide, GEA generated EUR 4.5 billion in 2016. “We set a very challenging goal for ourselves in the realization of innovation management across GEA. The expertise of UNITY’s consultants helped us to start this comprehensive innovation program and process it in a structured manner. In particular, the use and implementation of innovation tools, processes and structures in specific pilot projects ensured a high level of acceptance for innovation management in all areas of the organization.” Heinrich Meintrup, Executive Vice President and Head of Technology Centers (upper); Dr. Armin Tietjen, Executive Vice President Product Engineering & Development (lower), GEA Group Find out more in this video:

  • 23. 23 In order to secure and further expand its leading role in the aviation industry for the future, Lufthansa and UNITY conducted a group-wide foresight process. Alternative future scenarios were developed through the year 2030 for each of the four business segments: Aviation (consisting of Lufthansa Passage, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines), Catering (LSG Sky Chefs), Logistics (Lufthansa Cargo) as well as Bonus Programs (Miles & More). Based on this, future business opportunities, areas of risk and customer needs were identified for each individual business segment and they were used to derive six to ten strategic innovation fields. In the projects, Lufthansa benefited from the use of the scenario technique which is a systematic methodology that is used to predict future developments. This set the foundation for future-oriented strategy development and innovation planning. Then in phase 2, ideas were generated in a structured manner and systematic qualification processes for disruptive and highly promising ideas were established. UNITY supported the innovation process from creating business cases to developing decision gates. Some of the ideas have now been fully implemented and successfully introduced to the market. Moreover, the culture of innovation was further promoted and a uniform understanding of relevant framework conditions for the future was created across all business segments. • 24. Digitalization and Industrie 4.0 impact not only production, but most importantly, the way we will work in the future. When formulating Work 4.0 in regard to content, Miele was primarily concerned with the interaction of different areas such as competences, work flexibility, society, data protection, collaboration models and technology. In the scenario project Work 4.0, Miele profited from the methods and content related impulses that were provided by UNITY’s foresight and digitalization experts. Together, the drivers of transformation were successfully identified, thereby reducing the complexity of this strategic issue. Alternative future possibilities were subsequently worked out for these drivers and established ways of thinking were critically questioned. Building upon that, three consistent future environment scenarios were created. These served as an anchor for further strategic shaping and communication. Based on internal factors specific to Miele, such as organizational structure, corporate culture and leadership, five business scenarios were then created. These scenarios contributed to defining the concept of Work 4.0. The project team developed a common vision across varying functions and areas for the year 2025 and aligned different management perspectives. The course for Work 4.0 has now been set through nine strategic action areas and specific measures. UNITY Project Manager: Dennis R. • 29. 29 RUAG is standardizing support processes in the business areas of purchasing, finance/controlling and HR to enable shared services and harmonizing master data management through its group-wide change program called “Magellan.” The implementation of lean and standardized processes allows RUAG to enforce the market power by focusing on its core business. UNITY has been consulting RUAG in the areas of business transformation and PMO (Project Management Office) since 2015. This includes, among others, identifying and coordinating dependencies of individual business streams, roadmap development and coordinating the critical path. Further tasks include internal communication as a key element of change management and developing a basis for making decisions for the steering committee. In addition, UNITY is responsible for all aspects of the Magellan PMO, including program budgeting and controlling. After cross-divisional development of process blueprints, the technical foundation was setup as a SAP S/4 HANA ERP platform with optimized user interfaces. Then the commonly defined support processes were successfully implemented for the first division. Now, the path is clear to integrate additional divisions on this ERP platform with their support and to some extent their core processes. At the same time, master data management is being implemented step-by-step and a global HR system for the centralized management of employee data is being rolled-out. We have to prepare ourselves by developing modern concepts for hospitals – particularly with regard to the commissioning of the new hospital in Bolzano. Together, we have come a major step closer to our goal of providing patient-centered care through technological support and networking.” Dr. Thomas Schael, General Manager, South Tyrolean Healthcare Service Schlanders Meran Sterzing E-Prescriptions Real-time Data Personalized Therapy Central Warehouse Telemedicine Digital Data Transfer 105-70 72 36,2° LIVE Meran Locating Accidents Brixen Cloud 3D Printing Integrated Patient Records Homecare terapia intensiva Health 4.0
  • 33. 33 S. TYROLEAN HEALTHCARE SERVICE The South Tyrolean Healthcare Service is a network of 7 public hospitals, 20 healthcare districts with more than 10,000 employees. It is responsible for the medical care of over 520,000 residents in South Tyrol and about 100,000 tourists per day. The hospital in Bolzano is to become a pioneer for “Digitalization in Hospitals” so that in the future high quality care for patients can be guaranteed as well as simultaneously achieving a competitive advantage. The first step in attaining this goal is the commissioning of a new building for emergency and acute medicine in late 2018. UNITY‘s first task was to work with doctors, nurses, medical engineers, construction planners and IT staff of the South Tyrolean Healthcare Service to develop a vision for a hospital of the future in South Tyrol. More than 100 trends from the clinical environment were evaluated and identified for the central hospital in Bolzano through workshops and interviews. One important finding of the workshops was that, in particular, the networking of the sectors offers opportunities for new business models and a better provision of services to citizens. Thus, it is not only a matter of “Hospital 4.0,” rather it is more about the topic of “Health 4.0.” In conclusion, an implementation roadmap was derived from the common vision. In addition, the vision was used to derive future demands on the infrastructure. In turn, the demands were used to evaluate the current construction plan with regard to its future viability, particularly the aspect of IT infrastructure. UNITY was able to provide valuable impulses in areas such as: distribution of mobile services, WLAN and Bluetooth infrastructure, which all have to be taken into account during the planning and construction phases of the hospital. Using benefit-oriented and pragmatic approaches that include the entire organization from structure to culture and processes – this is the core challenge that companies need to overcome in digital transformation. Numerous new technologies are making it possible for companies to improve their own value creation through small- and large-scale digitalization solutions. It is always important to think of digitalization holistically, as the integration of upstream and downstream processes creates many benefits. UNITY was tasked with identifying digitalization potentials along the end-to-end processes based on selected pilot locations in the steel trade, and defining specific digitalization projects for rollout across many locations. Most importantly, an integrative approach was used to ensure the economic benefits for all of the locations that were taken into consideration. Furthermore, the requirements necessary for digital transformation were identified. Finally, a decision-making basis was presented to the management with 14 specific digitalization projects including business cases. This selected approach ensured fast and visible effects that are in alignment with the company’s business model and needs.
