Production Log
Today we did a lot of filming for our film trailer. We managed to complete all the filming
in one day because we thought it was better to spend a whole day filming instead of
filming bits every day. So we did a bit of filming in school, and filmed the rest of the
scenes outside of school. We had to wait for the sky to get dark because some scenes
were at night. We spent most of our day filming; we started at around 12 and finished at
7. Our filming had to be done today because we were behind schedule. Other
classmates had uploaded all their footages onto the Macs.
Everyone had their own roles. I had two roles, which were the camera person and the
director. I was chosen to be the director because we used my ideas for the trailer. My
group thought my story line was the best and most interesting and they thought the
name of my film ‘Who am I?’ was very effective. The director has many responsibilities. I
had to visualize the script for the trailer because it was my story and I knew exactly what
was happening and who said what. I directed the cast and crew, so I told them what
they needed to do. I made creative decisions and tried my best to overcome any
problems there were. I decided where the filming was going to be located etc. I
coordinated the cast and ensured the deadlines were met.
The camera person has a lot of responsibilities too. I set up the camera by attached the
tripod to the camera and made sure everything was fine. I took care of the camera and
made sure nothing was wrong. As the camera person it was my job to ensure we used
effective camera angles. I was also responsible for the movement of the camera. I made
sure I wasn’t just filming one spot, I moved the camera around to show everything that
was happening. So for example if the actor was walking to the other side of the room,
the camera would follow him. I used different shot types because without this the trailer
would not look effective. For example I used an extreme close up (ECU) in one of my
scenes so the audience could see the facial expression of the actor. I made sure the right
shots were used for the right scenes, so for example if there was a scene where there
was a fight, I would use a long shot (LS) or an extreme long shot (ELS) to show what’s
happening in the scene. I wouldn’t use an extreme clos up (ECU) because not everything
would show. I also did the same work with shot lengths. And finally I tried my best to
overcome any problems or issues.
Time of filming Scenes
12:10pm
Classroomscene
The scene in the classroomwas filmed in the library because
we couldn’t use an actual classroom, there were no classes
available. We filmed this scene during our free period. For
this scene I positioned the camera to take Long shot because
there were a lot of people acting in this scene so I had to
make sure everyone was shown.
5:00pm
Window scene
For this scene we needed it to be dark so we waited for the
sun to go down. We made sure the face of the actor wasn’t
seen properly by making him wear a hoody. For this scene I
positioned the camera to take a low angle shot of the guy in
the hoody. I did this to make him look intimidating.
5:15pm
Typing “missing
people”
This scene was filmed a few times even though it was
extremely short because we used different angles to see
which one looks better and more effective. We decided
which one at the end. For this scene I positioned the camera
to take an extremely close up in order for the audience to
see what Katie is typing and researching.
5:45pm
Comparing photo to
girl in article
It took us quite some time to filmthis footage as well
because we needed to repeat the filming a few times. We
had to make sure the laptop screen, Katie and the
photograph in her hand were all shown in the camera. We
also had to make sure that the audience could see what was
on the laptop screen. So we had to go back and watch the
footage ourselves then film the scene again if anything went
wrong or wasn’t as good enough. For this scene I positioned
the camera to take a longshot in order for the audience to
see Katie and her facial expression, and the photograph in
her hand. At first I wanted the camera to be positioned to
take an over the shoulder shot, but then the audience would
not have been able to see the reaction and facial expression
of Katie. I tried out many shots and I thought the Long shot
was the best.
6:15pm
Finding the diary
For this scene I positioned the camera to take a close up shot
in order for the audience to see that Katie is reading her
mums diary and see her facial expression. Katie’s facial
expression is really important in this scene because she is
crying. It took us quite some time to film this scene because
we had to make sure the crying looked real. We had to make
sure Katie looked traumatized. I kept changing angles for this
scene to see which angle looked better. So I filmed from
different angle a few times and then we decided which angle
we thought was best later as a team.
6:45pm
Not being able to sleep
This piece of footage took the longest for us to film. Things
kept on going wrong at this stage especially the lighting. For
this scene I tried different shots. Firstly we decided to
position the camera to take an extreme close up so the
audience could see her facial expression but then we
realized that it would be better if the audience also saw her
body language so we decided to position the camera to take
a full shot. Near the end the camera was running out of
charge so let the camera charge for abit and then used it.
We didn’t need a lot charge because this was our last scene
that we needed to film.
