The wolf is the largest member of the canine family, ranging in color from gray to white. Wolves live in packs of 4-7, hunt large hoofed mammals like deer and elk for food, and mate between January and February. There are approximately 7,000-11,200 wolves in Alaska and over 5,000 in the lower 48 US states, with their range reduced to parts of Canada, Alaska, and some western US states. Wolves were once common throughout North America but were killed off in most areas by the 1930s, making them now endangered.
