African wild dogs live in packs that typically include an alpha male and female and their offspring, and they hunt antelope, zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle across grasslands and open woodlands in sub-Saharan Africa. However, the population of African wild dogs has declined to only 2,000-5,000 individuals due mostly to habitat loss and other threats, and many now live only in nature preserves.
