Rachel Carson studied biology and zoology and worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She published several books including Under the Sea Wild in 1941, The Sea Around Us in 1952, and Silent Spring in 1962. Silent Spring sparked controversy by detailing the harm caused by uncontrolled use of insecticides, including poisoning animals and contaminating food supplies. While the chemical industry attacked Carson, a 1963 government report vindicated her findings about the dangers of misusing pesticides.

The passage discusses animal behavior and consciousness. Some scientists argue that certain animals can remember events, anticipate the future, make plans and coordinate group activities, though these scientists are cautious about claiming animals have true consciousness. The passage gives the example of honeybees communicating the location of food sources through an intricate dance, though most researchers assume this ability is innate rather than showing special intelligence. However, one study found that when the location of the food source was changed, the bees were able to modify their dances, questioning the assumption that the behavior is entirely instinctual.

A YOUNG BUSINESSMAN
Although he is only twelve, James Harries has his own antiques business and a flower shop. "He has a good eye
for a bargain," says his mother. "He was, only 8 when he bought that for 5p." She points to a china statuette worth $4,000.
"James gets most of his stock of antiques from jumble sales. Last year he bought a necklace for 10p which turned out to
be valuable. He sold it for “$8,000.”
James didn't get on at school so his parents hired a private tutor. "Other children think I'm strange because I earn
my own living and I don't want to join in their games."
James explains the success of his flower shop: "My prices have risen less than those of my competitors this year.
Also I've got a special offer for wedding parties. I give them a Rolls-Royce for the day if they spend more than $100 on
flowers. My employees don't particularly like working for a 12-year-old, but I pay their wages so they can't complain!"

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and zoology at Johns
Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was hired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, where she worked most of her life.
Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wild, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but sales were
poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us, which proved a fascinating look
beneath the Ocean’s Surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine biology. Her imaginary and
language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources. She had voluminous correspondence
and frequent discussion with experts in the field. However, she always realized the limitations of her non-technical
readers.
In 1962, Carson published Silent Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved how much harm
was done by uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison the food supply of animals, killed
birds and fish, and contaminate human food. At the time, spokemen for the chemical industry mounted personal attacks
against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her finding was flawed. However, her work was vindicated by a
1963 report of the President’s Science Advisory Committee.

When the early settlers, especially the English, arrived in the New World, the hardships and dangers awaiting
them were totally unexpected. Had it not been for some friendly Indians, the colonists never would have survived the
terrible winters. They knew nothing about planting crops, hunting animals, building sod houses, or making clothing from
animal skins. Life in England had been much simpler, and this new life was not like what the Spanish explorers had
reported.
The settlers did introduce iron tools, muskets for hunting, domesticated animals, and political ways to the Indians.
In exchange, the settlers learned to build canoes for water transportation and snowshoes and toboggans for winter
travelling. The Indians also taught them blaze trails through the forest, to hunt large animals and trap smaller ones, and to
spear fish in the lakes and streams.
The natives also introduced to the settlers typical foods such as turkey, corn, squash, beans, and pumpkin.
Everything possible was done in order to make their new settlement resemble the homes they had left behind.

III/. Read the passage and choose the best answer:
Winter is dangerous because it's so difficult to know what is going to happen and accidents take place so easily.
Fog can be waiting to meet you over the top of a hill. Ice might be hiding beneath the melting snow, waiting to send you
off the road. The car coming towards you may suddenly slide across the road.
Rule Number One for driving on icy roads is to drive smoothly. Uneven movements can make a car suddenly
very difficult to control. So every time you either turn the wheel, touch the brakes or increase your speed, you must be as
gentle and slow as possible. Imagine you are driving with a full cup of hot coffee on the seat next to you. Drive so that
you wouldn't spill it.
Rule Number Two is to pay attention to what might happen. The more ice there is, the further down the road you
have to look. Test how long it takes to stop by gently braking. Remember that you may be driving more quickly than you
think. In general, allow double your normal stopping distance when the road is wet, three times this distance on snow, and
even more on ice. Try to stay in control of your car at all times and you will avoid trouble.

Nowadays, we are all aware of the fact that we (36) ______ be eating a healthy diet. We get advice from
everywhere: TV, radio, magazines, books, videos and the Internet as well as friends, colleagues and family. Well, if you
find all this advice a little confusing, then there is now a much simpler solution, dieting by colour. The colour Diet is (37)
______ on the theory that the natural colour of food reflects (38) ______ nutritional content. For example green food such
as broccoli, spinach and lettuce (39) ______ high levels of beta carotene and glucose. These help reduce the risk of
cancer, are a good source of iron and act as powerful antioxidants, while yellow foods like bananas, corn and lemons have

principles of the colour diet are very easy to follow. Make sure that each metal contains a (40) ______ of colours, and you

Read the passage and choose the best answer:
Isn't it amazing how much time we spend talking about food? "Have you ever eaten...?" "What did you have for
lunch?" and so on. And yet when you travel from one country to another, you find that people have quite different feelings
about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most parts
of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East,
bread is the main part of every meal. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change.
Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians
drink large amounts of beer, and the French drink wine every day.
The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious
in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The
Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat because if its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish.
So it seems that although eating is a topic that we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in
what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to
change our eating habits.

A. people's different attitudes to food B. the importance of meat C. strange dishes in the world D. food and life

A. it doesn't smell
B. it is special for them C. it is well boiled
D. it is not good to have fish cooked
45.

A. we can spend few hours talking about food C. there is very little common sense in what we say about the eating habits
B. there is very little common sense in talking about food D. we should do much to change our eating habits
