The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and zoology at Johns
Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was hired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, where she worked most of her life.
Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wild, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but sales were
poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us, which proved a fascinating look
beneath the Ocean’s Surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine biology. Her imaginary and
language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources. She had voluminous correspondence
and frequent discussion with experts in the field. However, she always realized the limitations of her non-technical
readers.
In 1962, Carson published Silent Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved how much harm
was done by uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison the food supply of animals, killed
birds and fish, and contaminate human food. At the time, spokemen for the chemical industry mounted personal attacks
against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her finding was flawed. However, her work was vindicated by a
1963 report of the President’s Science Advisory Committee.

Read the text and choose the best answer to each of the questions below
When the early settlers, especially the English, arrived in the New World, the hardships and dangers awaiting
them were totally unexpected. Had it not been for some friendly Indians, the colonists never would have survived the
terrible winters. They knew nothing about planting crops, hunting animals, building sod houses, or making clothing from
animal skins. Life in England had been much simpler, and this new life was not like what the Spanish explorers had
reported.
The settlers did introduce iron tools, muskets for hunting, domesticated animals, and political ways to the Indians.
In exchange, the settlers learned to build canoes for water transportation and snowshoes and toboggans for winter
travelling. The Indians also taught them blaze trails through the forest, to hunt large animals and trap smaller ones, and to
spear fish in the lakes and streams.
The natives also introduced to the settlers typical foods such as turkey, corn, squash, beans, and pumpkin.
Everything possible was done in order to make their new settlement resemble the homes they had left behind.
36.
Which of the following did the new settlers teach the Indians?
A. new political ways B. new method of fishing C. new means of water travel D. how to trap animals
37.
What can we assume about corn, squash and pumpkin?
A. They were plentiful in England.

would not be so difficult?

Nowadays, we are all aware of the fact that we (11) ______ be eating a healthy diet. We get advice from

find all this advice a little confusing, then there is now a much simpler solution, dieting by colour. The colour Diet is (12)
______ on the theory that the natural colour of food reflects (13) ______ nutritional content. For example green food such
as broccoli, spinach and lettuce (14) ______ high levels of beta carotene and glucose. These help reduce the risk of
cancer, are a good source of iron and act as powerful antioxidants, while yellow foods like bananas, corn and lemons have
potassium and vitamin C which can reduce the pain of arthritis, reduce stress and be a good source of energy. The
principles of the colour diet are very easy to follow. Make sure that each metal contains a (15) ______ of colours, and you
will be eating a balanced, healthy diet. But remember, the colours have to be natural. Eating a packet of Smarties a day

SOLAR ECLIPSES
It's the middle of the afternoon, but suddenly it is very dark outside. Terrified, people look up into the sky and see
a black sun. What is happening? It is an eclipse. An eclipse happens when the moon passes in front of the sun and blocks
its light. This makes it look like the sun has gone dark, but really it is just the shadow of the moon.
Today, eclipses are not terrifying events because we understand their causes, but for thousands of years, many
people feared eclipses. For example, the ancient Chinese believed eclipses were caused by a dragon eating the sun. They
believed that if they made lots of noise and shot arrows into the sky, they could scare the dragon away. This was so
important to them that the Chinese emperor had two astronomers. Their job was to forecast when an eclipse would
happen. When the two astronomers failed to forecast one eclipse, the Chinese emperor was so angry he had them killed.
The ancient Greeks thought their gods caused eclipses when they got angry. One time, two Greek armies, the Lydians and
Medes, were fighting a bloody war. During the battle, there was an eclipse. The two armies were so frightened that they
stopped fighting and made peace.
Today, we know that these beliefs are not true, but they are still very valuable. Ancient societies did not have
good calendars. But they were afraid of eclipses, and they recorded them in their histories. Today we can use eclipses to
learn the exact dates of events in history. For example, we know that the war between the Lydians and Medes ended in
585 B.C. because we know the eclipse happened in that year.

Our demand for water is constantly increasing. Every year there are more and more people in the world. Factories
turn out more and more products and need more and more water. We live in a world of water. But almost all of it - about
97%-is in the oceans. This water is too salty to be used for drinking, farming, and manufacturing. Only about 3% of the
world's water is fresh. Most of this water is not easily available to man because it is locked in glaciers and icecaps.
There is as much water on earth today as there ever was or will ever be. Most of the water we use finds its way to
the oceans. There, it is evaporated by the sun. It then falls back to the earth as rain. Water is used and reused over again. It
is never used up. Although the world as a whole has plenty of fresh water, some regions have a water shortage. Rain does
not fall evenly over the earth. Some regions are always too dry, and others too wet. A region that usually gets enough rain
may suddenly have a serious dry spell and another region may be flooded with too much rain.

The loss of the jobs and persistent unemployment in the industrial countries is due mainly to changes in technology.
It is thought to be misleading to blame job losses on the shift of corporations from the industrial countries to the Third
World.
The present technological developments have been compared to a Third Industrial Revolution. The first coming in
the 19th century was characterized by the steam engine and the use of coal. In the 1920s the second emerged with the use
of oil and the electrodynamo. The third, the present one, is driven by computers, biotechnology and information
technology.
However, there can be seen weaknesses in the newest of industrial revolutions. The technology is advancing so fast
and productivity is rising so fast that we are left with a big problem. Because of the loss in jobs, caused largely by this
new technology, there will not be enough people with money to buy all these products.
Technology as definitely enhanced our standard of living, even our quality of life. But as the capacity to produce
expands and the lack of purchasing power and consequent demand diminish, there can be overproduction and recession,
and what happens to our standard of living?
41.
What is the main point the author is making?
a. That the industrial countries have more unemployment than the Third World.
b. That technology is the main cause of unemployment.
c. That corporations have shifted' to the Third World.
d. That the present situation is like in the Industrial Revolution.
42.
Which of the following is not a characteristic of one of the industrial revolutions?
a. The use of oil
b. The use of computer
c. The use of electricity
d. The use of coal
43.
What is stated as being the main weakness of the Third Industrial Revolution?
a. There will be too few people who can afford to buy things. b. There will not be enough money around.
c. There won't be enough products for everyone to buy.
d. There will be too many machines in the factories.
44.
Why does the author think that there won't be enough people to buy the products?
a. People will not be able to keep up with technology.
b. Productivity will not be high enough.
c. There will be too many products.
d. Many people will be unemployed
45.
What do we infer is the author's attitude to the technology?
a. It has improved our purchasing power
b. It has improved our quality of life.
c. It has created more jobs
d. It is not responsible for the recession.
