The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is a collection of annals in Old English chronicling the history of the Anglo-Saxons from 60 BC to 1154 AD. It was initially created in the late 9th century in Wessex during the reign of King Alfred the Great. Multiple manuscripts were independently updated and distributed to monasteries across England. Nine manuscripts survive today providing different accounts, as the scribes added their own biases from the places they were written. It is considered an important primary source for understanding English history during the Anglo-Saxon period.
