Community-based conservation efforts in eastern Nepal aim to protect bamboo forests which are crucial for sustaining the region's red panda population. Key threats include habitat loss and fragmentation from unsustainable bamboo harvesting as well as poaching. The program works with local communities to regulate bamboo use, conduct conservation patrols, and educate about red pandas' dependence on bamboo. By conserving bamboo across a large landscape and empowering community "forest guardians", the goal is to create a protected community forest habitat for long-term red panda conservation.
