1. Analysis- The Strangers
Camerawork
Establishing shot- helps show the setting to the audience whichis a conventional
isolated house, therefore they can identify the nature of their surroundings.
Twoshot when the characters are hugging shows the relationship between them. We
learn that they are in a relationship and this emphasises the fragility of each individual.
Shot Composition- the womanis standing and is placed underneath the deer’s head. This
is used to accentuate death and suggests that they are being hunted, a hierarchy is
created.
Close up is used to emphasise the fear of the characters and pass that fear on into the
audience.
Mise-en-scene
Masks are used, this is a stereotypical horror film prop which is used to de-humanise
characters and make them seem monster like, this increases the fear of the audience as
they cannot relate to the characters.
Weapons such as an axe are used to give the antagonists an unfair advantage making the
protagonists inferior and increase their vulnerability.
Iconography-the deer’s head suggests that they are being hunted and has connotations
of death.
The isolated cabin is a conventional setting used as it emphasises their helplessness to
the audience.
