Analyses of two news stories and discuss the ethics involved:
Celebrity privacy
I have been asked to write an essay writing two analysis’s for two different news stories. The first
article is about celebrity privacy and the second one is a sensational and hard hitting.
When it comes to story priority it depends what the news outlets decide. Most news outlets would
use hard news as their main priority, whereas tabloid newspapers and commercial radio stations
that are aimed at teenagers would use celebrity news as their main priority.
In terms of immediacy, whether its celebrity news or hard hitting news, the quickest way we would
find news out nowadays would be over social networks. For example when the tsunami hit Thailand
in 2004 the ways of people getting the information across was by sending videos and photos over to
news outlets. Now, people can send videos and photos to news outlets and they will post them
straight to their twitter/Facebook pages. Whereas in the past they would have had to send out a
news reporter and crew to go and film the report.

As you can see the sky news twitter page are doing regular posts with the stories that are going on
around the world. As the page is verified we can trust this to be a reliable source.
The second quickest way to get news would be on the radio. This is because they have regular news
announcements. Also because they can change their schedule and stop whatever they are talking
about to announce the news. After the radio, TV is the next most popular way of getting news. This
is because the TV can switch and announce some breaking news if it’s big enough. And finally the
final way to get news the quickest would be to read the newspaper. This is because readers have to
wait for the next day to find out the breaking news.
The two news stories I am covering are from newspaper articles therefor there isn’t any availability
of audio. But if the stories were to be covered on the TV or radio then it would all be audio. Teams
would have to go out and record interviews and news reports.
Each media outlet has its own news room policy. For example radio stations like Key103 and Capital
would write news about celebrities whereas radio BBC 2 would report the hard news and
sensational stories. The tabloids write the more ‘sensational’ headlines, because they want the
ratings, even if the stories aren’t always what you think the headlines are. Whereas broadsheets
write the truth.
Human interest stories are stories that make you feel good. They are stories that have a happy
ending, we could class the missing girl story as a human interest because it sort of has a happy
ending. Public interest agenda is the general public’s opinion.
