An overview of applying to other major destinations for JIS students.
1. Welcome
The following presentation is a brief overview of the
application procedure for applying to universities in
destinations common to our students, other than in
the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand.
3. USA
Yr 12 gather information and take the SAT test
Academic calendar Sept – May
Choice – flexibility – you can change your mind.
Double majors and Double degrees
Costs vary – State universities typically between 22,000
– and 28,000 USD per annum some as low as 6,000
USD
Stanford = 36,000 USD
Living expenses = 9,000 – 15,000 USD
Pay careful attention to visa requirements

5. USA – Application forms.
Common App. Accepted by more than 414 universities
Set up account in Yr 12. Deadline for applications is
January 1st.
Available at www.commonapp.org
Many other universities have forms on their website
Many state universities don’t require an essay
6. USA – SAT test
3.5 hour exam given 6 times a year at JIS
Critical reading (200-800)
Maths (200-800)
Writing (200-800)
Typical application has 500 on each section or a 1,500
total
Register 6 weeks before test, so for 7th May 2011 test
you should register in Term 2 break.
Highly selective (Ivy League) universities require a SAT
of >2100

Draft an essay or personal statement
Jan, May or Jun: Take 1st SAT test (you should then take
the 2nd SAT early in Year 13)
8. Canada

9. Canada
No country centralised application process
Association of Canadian universities (aucc.ca) is the
most authoritative central information bank for
research

Other provinces apply directly to the university
Universities will send an application pack
Majority of application deadlines fall in February (mid
Jan for McGill)
10. Canada
Check application and supporting document
requirements and deadlines carefully. They differ for
each university and vary widely.
Most universities require a comprehensive school
reference. Individual teacher references are not usually
required.
Application essays or personal statements are very
important.

12. Malaysia
Public universities wholly or partly subsidised by
government include, private universities and branch

Singapore has a number of leading foreign universities and
partnerships, including: Uof Chicago, Duke, MIT, Stanford, Cornell

16. Singapore – Application procedure
Students need to apply to each university individually
Many universities will not accept students on
predicted grades. Check carefully as some courses
(medicine) will only admit on official results.
Application dates are typically open October – March
of the year prior to entry.
17. Singapore- Admissions
Some universities will admit on the basis of SAT
results. If you want to take this option be sure to
register for the tests well in advance.
Singapore fees range from 11,00 SGD to 31,000 SGD
Plus living costs of between 10-30 K SGD
18. India
You can apply as NRI (Non resident Indian) or PIO
(People of Indian Origin). Most universities have an
NRI quota
Cost to study medicine if privately funded is USD100 –
150K for the degree. If admitted by sitting and passing
a highly competitive entrance exam fees are heavily
subsidised.
Most (medical) courses start in July /August and most
universities will only admit on final grades, not
predicted grades. There are some exceptions to this.
Research each university for requirements.
19. India – Application procedure
Students doing A Levels need to obtain an
“equivalence certificate” ask HE staff for details
Some deemed universities have their own entrance
exams (for medicine). Check each university.

21. Deadlines and documentation
Please research deadlines and required documentation
very carefully.
Please appreciate that it takes time to coordinate with
all teachers on the writing of a considered reference.
You will need to allow at least one month for the
school to provide references and other letters of
recommendation.
