Underground Transmission Cable Monitoring – Lessons Learned at AEP
As part of its system and asset health monitoring initiative, American Electric Power (AEP) has deployed several new online health monitoring systems on its cross-linked polyethylene power cables. Two different types of monitoring systems have been deployed, including partial discharge monitoring and distributed temperature sensing monitoring on a total of 4 different 138kV power cable circuits and 1 69kV power cable circuit. These continuous health monitors provide multiple indicators about the power cable assisting in the health assessment of an otherwise invisible asset. The first of these installations was completed in 2016, with the latest installation being completed in 2019. The nature of the monitoring systems, the possible benefits, as well as some of AEP’s lessons learned from these pilot installations will be discussed in the following paper.

This paper presents an adaptive control algorithm called improved linear sinusoidal tracer (ILST) for a three-phase distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) to perform different functions like power factor correction, harmonics elimination, load balancing, and voltage regulation under linear and nonlinear loads. A prototype DSTATCOM is developed using a digital signal processor to test the control algorithm in real-time. The performance of the DSTATCOM with the proposed ILST control algorithm is found to be satisfactory under various load conditions.

CONTROL OF THREE AREA INTERCONNECTED POWER SYSTEM USING SLIDING MODE CONTROLLER

The idea of ‘Wireless Sensor Network’ (WSN) is the basic building block of a water quality monitoring using wireless sensor network (WSN) technology. To monitor water quality over different sites as a real-time application, an excellent system architecture constituted by distributing sensor nodes and a base station is suggested. The nodes and base station are connected using WSN technology like Zigbee. Base stations are connected via Ethernet. Design and implementation of a prototype model using WSN technology are the challenging work. Data collected by various sensors on the node side such as pH, turbidity and oxygen level is sent via WSN to the base station. Data collected from the remote site can be displayed in visual format as well as it can be analyzed using different simulation tools at the base station. This novel system has advantages such as no carbon emission, low power consumption, more flexible to deploy at remote sites and so on.

CONTROL OF THREE AREA INTERCONNECTED POWER SYSTEM USING SLIDING MODE CONTROLLER
This document summarizes a paper that proposes a sliding mode controller (SMC) for load frequency control (LFC) in a three-area interconnected power system. The paper models the dynamic behavior of each area and designs an SMC to keep frequency deviations and tie-line power deviations near zero despite load variations. The idea of ‘Wireless Sensor Network’ (WSN) is the basic building block of a water quality monitoring using wireless sensor network (WSN) technology. To monitor water quality over different sites as a real-time application, an excellent system architecture constituted by distributing sensor nodes and a base station is suggested. The nodes and base station are connected using WSN technology like Zigbee. Base stations are connected via Ethernet. Design and implementation of a prototype model using WSN technology are the challenging work. Data collected by various sensors on the node side such as pH, turbidity and oxygen level is sent via WSN to the base station. Data collected from the remote site can be displayed in visual format as well as it can be analyzed using different simulation tools at the base station. This novel system has advantages such as no carbon emission, low power consumption, more flexible to deploy at remote sites and so on.

To eliminate the adverse effect from parameter variations as well as distorted grid conditions, a current control scheme of an LCL-filtered grid-connected inverter using a discrete integral sliding mode control (ISMC) and resonant compensation is presented. The proposed scheme is constructed based on the cascaded multiloop structure, in which three control loops are composed of grid-side current control, capacitor voltage control, and inverter-side current control. An active damping to suppress the resonance caused by LCL filter can be effectively realized by means of the inverter-side feedback control loop. Furthermore, the seamless transfer operation between the grid-connected mode and islanded mode is achieved by the capacitor voltage control loop. To retain a high tracking performance and robustness of the ISMC as well as an excellent harmonic compensation capability of the resonant control (RC) scheme at the same time, two control methods are combined in the proposed current controller. As a result, the proposed scheme yields a high quality of the injected grid currents and fast dynamic response even under distorted grid conditions. Furthermore, to reduce the number of sensors, a discrete-time reduced-order state observer is introduced. Simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.Sensor simulations
This document proposes an air pollution monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks. The system uses sensor nodes equipped with CO, SO2, and dust sensors that transmit pollution data via Zigbee to a central server. The simulation results show the sensor nodes successfully measuring pollution levels from two areas and transmitting the data via Zigbee to be displayed on the central server in real-time. The system is designed to remotely monitor industrial air pollution and could be deployed in production industries in Tanzania to provide pollution data for decision makers.

Various fall-detection solutions have been previously proposed to create a reliable surveillance system for elderly people with high requirements on accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. In this paper, an enhanced fall detection system is proposed for elderly person monitoring that is based on smart sensors worn on the body and operating through consumer home networks. With treble thresholds, accidental falls can be detected in the home healthcare environment. By utilizing information gathered from an accelerometer, cardiotachometer and smart sensors, the impacts of falls can be logged and distinguished from normal daily activities. The proposed system have to be analyzed in a prototype system as detailed in this paper. From a test group of 30 healthy participants, it was found that the proposed fall detection system can achieve a high detection accuracy of 97.5%, while the sensitivity and specificity are 96.8% and 98.1% respectively. Therefore, this system can reliably be developed and deployed into a consumer product for use as an elderly person monitoring device with high accuracy and a low false positive rate.

This document presents the development of a microgrid central controller and hierarchical control system in the Intelligent Microgrid Lab at Aalborg University. The lab contains several inverter-based microgrid setups that can operate independently or be interconnected. Local primary control is implemented on dSPACE controllers while a LabVIEW-based central controller coordinates secondary and tertiary control functions. An example case of voltage/frequency restoration and voltage unbalance compensation is tested using hierarchical control across the different levels. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the overall control system.

- 1. AN APPARATUS IN MONITORING THE ENERGY CHARGING SYSTEM ABSTRACT: In this article the implementation of an uninterrupted solar energy surveillance system is compl. The completed system is comprised of three major sub-systems that include a charging sub-system, a control sub-system and a display sub-system. Based on several transmission standards, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Zigbee capability combined with wireless transmission techniques, the proposed surveillance system is designed for monitoring a solar energy system. The performance of the simulated WSSs is evaluated using statistical report results. The proposed surveillance system can be fully extended to several different kinds of applications, such as, health care and environmental inspection. The experimental measurement results significantly show that channel fading over the propagation channel dominates the developed system performance
