Magento 2 - An Intro to a Modern PHP-Based System - Northeast PHP 2015Joshua Warren
Over 200,000 companies use the Magento 1 platform to power their eCommerce needs. So when they set out to build a major new version, the Magento team had significant pressure to deliver a modern, well-designed PHP-based system. Pulling in some of the best of the PHP world through tools like Composer, phpunit and more, I believe they met that goal. In this talk, we’ll take a look at the design and architecture of Magento 2, including it’s use of dependency injections, interceptors and service contracts to provide numerous ways for developers to extend and customize the system.

Apache Sling as a Microservices Gateway
---
Microservices are definitely the hot topic _du jour_ . Everyone ( and their dog ) is using microservices or migrating towards them. However, there is a gap between the enthusiam for microservices and the ability to create and maintain the infrastructure and culture to effectively use microservices.
Apache Sling is an innovative web framework built on top of the Java Content Repository (JCR), that uses OSGi for its component model and fosters RESTful application design. And, as we will see, it is also perfect match for a microservices gateway.
In this talk we will review the pros and cons of microservices and monoliths, and look for middle road that smaller organisations that follow to use services productively. One of the approaches we will outline and demo is an API gateway built on top of Apache Sling, used to adress the cross-cutting concerns that would otherwise be reimplemented by all microservices.

Performance matters and probably everyone hears that 1-second delay in page response can result in a 7% reduction in conversion, translating it to sales, potentially you are going to lose $2.5 million every year if your store is making $100.000 per day.
Even the best-optimized back-end solution can be ruined by the bunch of JavaScript libraries or even just not optimised images. It’s really easy to forget about front-end performance or let you clients ruin it just by adding unoptimized content and tons of tracking scripts.
I’ll show you a way to easily measure the Magento 2 front-end performance and how to find and eliminate bottlenecks. The talk will also cover common mistakes and show how different configuration options will affect page load and user experience.
Frontend asset management with Bower and Gulp.jsRenan Gonçalves
Leverage Bower as your package manager for the front-end assets of your CakePHP application. Define your packages once (jQuery, Bootstrap, and what not?), and let it download everything for you and check for compatibilities among them. No more committing third-party assets to your repository.
And also utilizing Gulp.js, the streaming build system, for automating repetitive front-end related tasks like converting LESS to CSS, CoffeeScript to JavaScript, concatenating files, minifying them, etc with just a single command.

Enabling Microservice @ Orbitz - GOTO Chicago 2016Steve Hoffman
In this talk we will discuss how we enabled decomposition of one of our 500+ system components into a continuously deployed microservice cluster. Our platform is comprised of Apache Mesos/Marathon, Docker, and a number of local services including Consul for service discovery, Logstash for diskless logging, and a custom metrics forwarder to Graphite. Building on this, we'll detail our CI pipeline using Jenkins workflows to build and publish microservices as Docker images, test and deploy via Marathon/Mesos, and automated change tickets. Finally, we'll discuss lessons learned from building our own enterprise PaaS and scaling it out to a large organization.

This presentation will discuss the experiences of a skilled, enterprise, J2EE team moving to Amazon Web Services to build a new “serverless” solution. This will include motivation for choosing and experience using specific technology (Java, Lambda, S3, RDS, API Gateway, VPC, …) The talk will qualitatively explain the productivity improvement achieved by going “serverless” relative to a more traditional application server design. We will also identify the top three helpful technologies, the three biggest hurdles and our wish list for three new capabilities.

Similar to Amped for AMP at Pubcon Las Vegas 2016 (20)
This presentation was given at Pubcon Pro, in Las Vegas NV on October 17, 2018. In the presentation I explain the steps I took to protect myself and become compliant with a WordPress website.
Presented at last weeks Travel Portland event, geared towards local travel and tourism businesses, like hotels, restaurants, car services, etc. Good basic info with an invaluable and downloadable "business worksheet" that I created myself.
Tonight I'm speaking to a group of non IM folks, just brick and mortar business owners, most of them members of the East Portland Chamber of Commerce.
It's SUPER basic, and even includes instructions on how to copy& paste and how to make a secure password.
It's not to be considered "SEO education" by any means, but I worked hard on it so thought I'd share.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
