Cauterization is an ancient medical practice involving burning the body to remove or close off a body part. It was commonly used among early Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, and Mayan civilizations. In Unani medicine, cauterization is considered an indispensable regimen known as Amle-Kai. The instrument used should ideally be made of gold and applied superficially under direct observation, or deeper within the body using a speculum coated in talcum powder or paste to protect surrounding tissues from damage during treatment, especially for issues like hemorrhaging.

Ansari * Tanveer Alam<br />ABSTRACT<br />Cauterization is a medical term describing the burning of the body to remove or close a part of it. Or The act of coagulating blood and destroying tissue with a hot iron or caustic agent. Ibne Sina has mentioned near about 36 regimes in his book Alquanoon Fil Tib, among which Amle kai is an indispensable and effective regimen. It is one of the oldest medical practices, having been practiced among the diverse ancient people, including the Mesopotamians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Mayans. The instrument for cautery is best made of gold. Cautery is used in areas which are superficial and can be directly observed. It is sometimes applied to deeper tissues as in the nose, mouth and anus. In such cases, the instrument should be introduced through a speculum, coated with talcum or a paste prepared with Armenian bole and vinegar and wrapped with a piece of muslin. The speculum is cooled by dipping in rose-water or some other suitable liquid. The area should be visualized through the speculum, and then a thin Cautery introduced without touching the sides. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the neighbouring tissues, especially the nerves, fasciae and ligaments. In the treatment of haemorrhage.
