The America21 Project aims to promote inclusive competitiveness through STEM education, entrepreneurship, and investment. It seeks to connect disadvantaged citizens to innovation clusters and emerging industries. Inclusive competitiveness measures how diverse populations perform within innovation ecosystems and emerging sectors to improve overall economic competitiveness. It is supported by education, entrepreneurship, and capital formation. America21 aims to diffuse inclusive competitiveness throughout regional, national, and global economies.

KRI Brown Bag Seminar #1 which was held on the 15 February 2017 hosted guest speaker, Professor Saadiah Mohamad, who discussed the developments in social finance and provided a case for structuring Shariah-compliant products with social impact.
Her presentation acknowledged the claim among critics that there is an inherent weakness in the present-day Islamic banking and finance industry in terms of its underdeveloped social sector. She thus explored a framework for a socially responsible investment sukuk and social impact bonds (SIB) in the social finance space, and came up with recommendations for structuring a Shariah-compliant SIB or social sukuk.
Professor Saadiah’s arguments are based on her latest journal publication “A Case for an Islamic Social Impact Bond”, under the ACRN Oxford Journal of Finance and Risk Perspectives.
Since about one year, the Haitian government is aiming at attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). This same government is also aiming at developing entrepreneurship. So far, the government has failed to attract significant FDI due to the negative image of Haiti. At the moment entrepreneurship appears has a more probable option for the development of the country.
Many academic papers have been written about the Haitian economic situation. One of the latest is the paper written by Junia Barreau (2012) entitled: ‘FDI: The difficult situation of Haiti’. However, hardly any academic paper has been written about entrepreneurship in the tourism sector in Haiti as a potential source of economic development. This article aims to contribute to the body of meta-literature in this area.
Starting with a review of academic papers on entrepreneurship and then initiatives from the private and public sector to develop entrepreneurship in Haiti, this article adopts a progressive approach successively presenting the tourism industry as the way forward for Haiti and entrepreneurship as a vector.
Methodologically, this article builds on the academic critical literature on entrepreneurship and tourist. Then, based on case studies we are going to see how the development of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) can contribute to the development of entrepreneurship and to poverty reduction by providing poor people access to financial service. Last but not least, we are going to explain why the tourism sector should be the pilot for this type of scheme

Presentation to the Mid-Atlantic Community Development Institute on definitions of economic development, trends impacting the need for economic development, and frameworks for acting on local economic development.
America needs more innovators, entrepreneurs and job creators to bolster the nation's economic competitiveness. ScaleUp America sees a multicultural society filled with talented innovators contributing to a knowledge-based, tech-driven, globally competitive innovation economy.
ScaleUp America's Inclusive Competitiveness Summit series will introduce a new economic narrative across the national landscape that combines economic inclusion and economic competitiveness into a 21st century national bipartisan vision of Inclusive Competitiveness. We seek to catalyze conversation around this national economic imperative and help target regions develop inclusive economic frameworks through collaboration of willing local and national stakeholders interested in channeling resources to the local level to scale up what's working and shore up holes in the infrastructure by connecting disconnected communities to their local innovation ecosystems.
Our formula for engaging America is through a series of public Town Hall events followed by a next-day gathering of stakeholders in the local innovation ecosystem.
We know it's nobody's job in each region to catalyze collaboration across the stakeholder communities and develop new inclusive economic frameworks that benefit all of the region collectively. ScaleUp America has made a commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative to take on the responsibility of assisting willing regions to incorporate more of their diverse communities into the pipeline-to-productivity framework to increase job growth, wealth creation and overall economic competitiveness of the region utilizing all of the region's talent.
The Inclusive Competitiveness Summit Series is the first step in this long process.
ScaleUp Partners is America's only economic development consultancy focused on inculcating Inclusive Competitiveness: improving the competitive performance of underrepresented populations in the innovation economy.
Our approach relies upon three priorities:
1. Changing the economic narrative across underrepresented populations in urban and rural regions
2. Inculcating Inclusive Competitiveness policies and strategies in regions across the U.S.
3. Connecting economically disconnected communities to local innovation ecosystems and economic opportunity
We believe:
STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) is a critical educational prerequisite to access the dual pipelines of productivity:
A. High-wage, tech-based workforce
B. High-growth, tech-driven entrepreneurship
ScaleUp Partners assists regions in achieving their economic competitiveness goals through development of Inclusive Competitiveness strategies and frameworks.
We work with educational institutions, foundations, policymakers, elected leadership, tech-based economic development organizations, community development organizations, small businesses, entrepreneurs, funders and equity investors, and regional development organizations nationwide.

(Inclusive Competitiveness: empowering underrepresented populations to compete in the innovation economy)
The top priorities of the nation in every presidential election are the economy and jobs. This election is no exception. But summit asks the question, who will create the jobs of tomorrow? The answer is surprising. Minority entrepreneurs (i.e. women, black and Hispanic Americans) represent the fastest rate of entrepreneurial growth in America. These prospective job creators remain disconnected from valuable resources they need to scale up their efforts and produce successful businesses that grow jobs. This summit introduces solutions to this economic problem.

What is Inclusive Competitiveness and why is it possibly the defining issue of a 21st century generation? The term competitiveness is ubiquitous in its use among economic development planners and policymakers, yet virtually unheard of outside of sports. But the demographic shifts of the nation require raised awareness of why economic competitiveness must now become more inclusive.
Journalism That Matters and the University of Oregon Agora Journalism Center have partnered with Mike Green, co-founder of ScaleUp Partners, to produce the first-ever Conversation on Inclusive Competitiveness (empowering underrepresented populations to compete in the Innovation Economy). The intersection of important community issues and the journalists who tell these stories creates quite a conversation around what's important to communities and what appears in media (or doesn't).
What are the conditions for success for 3 million black kids ages 10-13 in public school today? African American students are consistently struggling to overcome systemic problems inherent in broken systems that influence and impact them daily: family, schools and churches. As innocent victims of adult systemic biases, these kids seek brighter futures. But how can we help? Here's food for thought.
Inclusive Competitiveness: Empowering underrepresented populations to improve their productivity performance to compete in the 21st century innovation economy.
The US is facing a growing economic inclusion crisis. Ironically, Mississippi may be able to provide leadership, given it has a long history of experience with a growing minority-majority population against a backdrop of economic exclusion and low levels of access to opportunity. If we can resolve the economic crisis in Mississippi, we can avert a looming economic crisis in America.

Nearly every major metro region in America is experiencing great economic stress. Amazingly, stakeholders in every region are disconnected, disjointed and unable to effectively communicate. There exists no common vision, strategy or framework for including and empowering all of the region's residents.
Local innovation ecosystems are fragmented, with leaders operating in their own independent silos. And historically underserved and disconnected peoples and communities are so far behind they are losing ground daily as the explosive growth of innovation hubs and the startup culture threatens to leave them behind permanently.
The Innovation Economy Epiphany Workshop introduces the BIG PICTURE in a way that all audiences can clearly understand. In this workshop, the key issues of a common local vision, common understanding, common strategies, inclusive frameworks and open collaboration are threaded throughout.
But how do we develop a common vision, common understanding, and a strategic approach toward economic inclusion and increased regional competitiveness?
How do we empower those who have fallen far behind to not only participate in the innovation economy but become productive in job growth and wealth creation?
And how can we identify and scale up what's working in each local region?
What role does education play in the "economic future" of each region?
And how do we get local stakeholders to break down the walls of competitive silos to collaborate for the benefit of each generation?
This workshop is an innovative approach to aligning the disjointed, connecting the disconnected and empowering individuals, communities and regions to develop a sustainable pipeline to productivity process that increases job growth and regional economic competitiveness through the framework of local innovation, inclusion and impact.
You will emerge from this workshop with a significantly greater understanding of how your local innovation ecosystem works, your role in it and an understanding of how you can be part of the solution to the challenges your region faces.
This workshop is step one of a process that will open your eyes to a 21st century economic imperative and national vision of Inclusive Competitiveness. It is a must-attend event for anyone concerned about the economic future of their community, region and state.

America needs to cultivate all of its talent to reach its highest economic competitiveness goals in the 21st century. The STEM Diversity Summit is focused on developing pathways to prosperity through inclusive competitiveness, starting with the STEM education pipeline.
Minorities are underrepresented in the 21st century knowledge-based, tech-driven globally competitive innovation economy. Mike Green seeks to change that by empowering the disconnected and informing the well-connected.

America21 - Inclusive Competitiveness: Glossary of terms
1. Inclusive Competitiveness: Glossary of Concepts and Terms
The America21 Project (America21)
America21 is a nationally networked and regionally focused social enterprise whose mission is to
inculcate a new 21st century economic narrative that connects disconnected citizens to Innovation
Economy clusters, ecosystems and emerging industry sectors through STEM education, high-growth
entrepreneurship and risk capital formation and investment.
The approach is grounded in principles of economic competitiveness and inclusion – Inclusive
Competitiveness – and further extends proven innovation- and technology-based economic
development strategies to seed the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and employees
within urban communities and metropolitan centers.
Innovation Economy
The time period of the late 20th and early 21st centuries marked by radical socioeconomic changes
brought about by further globalized commerce, democratized information and access, accelerated
new knowledge creation and exponential growth in entrepreneurship.
Inclusive Competitiveness
Targeted metrics and strategies to measure and improve characteristic performance levels of diverse
populations within innovation ecosystems and clusters, emerging industry sectors and other areas
critical to overall economic competitiveness.
Inclusive Competitiveness neither alters nor replaces, but rather complements and enhances existing
and emerging economic competitiveness metrics and strategies, exclusively focusing on the
characteristic performance of diverse populations.
3 Inclusive Competitiveness Pillars
Inclusive Competitiveness is girded by three pillars:
education, specifically STEM (science, technology, engineering and math),
entrepreneurship, especially high-growth,
capital formation and investment, including equity, debt and credit.
“T.A.P.I.M.” Progression
Inclusive Competitiveness responds to the same needs and follows the same “T.A.P.I.M.” Progression
that created the existing innovation ecosystems and clusters:
Thought, Advocacy, Policy, Investment, Market
• New Thought and Advocacy produce a new economic narrative
• New economic narrative breaks through to form new Policy
• New Policy is adopted to attract new Investment
• New Investment is offered to incent new Market reactions
Changing the Economic Narrative • Promoting Inclusive Competitiveness • Connecting the Economically Disconnected
Email: info@blackinnovation.com • Blog: http://blackinnovation.org
2. Innovation Ecosystem
Like the natural world, everything in the Innovation Economy is connected. An innovation ecosystem
is an interconnected, interdependent and balanced community of assets:
people and talent (entrepreneurs/management/workforce);
capital (equity/credit/debt);
education institutions (K-12/higher education);
research and commercialization resources (universities/corporations/tech transfer);
customers (marquee);
philanthropy (community wealth);
government (local/state/federal)
professional services (legal/accounting/intermediary organizations)
Assets within the ecosystem work together to create new enterprises, jobs, wealth and economic
prosperity. However, unlike natural ecosystems that are organically created, innovation ecosystems
must be intentionally created.
Inclusive Competitiveness Diffusion
As innovation ecosystems and clusters help create more economically competitive regions; Inclusive
Competitiveness helps create more economically competitive regional innovation ecosystems and
clusters by connecting Disconnected Citizens to new opportunities. Thus, improving ecosystem and
cluster performance and leading to more successful overall economic competitiveness outcomes.

Law of Economic Competitiveness
No region can sustainably increase economic competitiveness without growing enough of the right
people to create and take advantage of that increased economic competitiveness.
If your region’s economic competitiveness goals consistently outpace your growth rate in the right
people, you simply will not – indeed cannot – build a resilient, economically competitive region.

3. Equity Citizens
Equity Citizens are Americans with economic ownership holdings or interests in the United States.
Equity Citizens are entitled and able to access an equitable proportion of the nation’s best
opportunities to achieve economic empowerment. The term is used to distinguish from
Constitutional Citizens.
Constitutional Citizens
Constitutional Citizens are Americans by birthright enshrined in the Constitution or by acquisition
through naturalization. Constitutional Citizens are full and equal citizens under law, but do not
necessarily have much, if any, underlying economic ownership holdings or interests in the U.S. They
are entitled to, but not able to access, the nation’s best opportunities to achieve economic
empowerment. The term is used to distinguish from Equity Citizens.
Economic Empowerment
Economic Empowerment is self-active, innovative and competitive, able to bring about a sustainable
state of economic growth and development — rooted in education, capital formation and
investment, entrepreneurship and employment.
Innovation Economy Squeeze
Innovation Economy Squeeze is the dramatically increasing level of U.S. business productivity,
enabled by efficiency gains from new technology adoption and integration (and far fewer
employees), combined with the increasingly “flat world,” (where competition for new jobs is global),
that squeezes Americans in unprecedented ways.
Fewer Americans are needed to produce more goods and services; and billions of new workers
around the world are now competing with Americans for new jobs in diverse geographic regions.
Connected Citizens
Connected Citizens are Americans with the awareness of innovation ecosystems, skills, competencies
and access to economic networks, and characteristic performance levels required to successfully
connect to innovation clusters, ecosystems and emerging industry sector opportunities.
Disconnected Citizens
Disconnected Citizens are Americans lacking some or all of the following: awareness of innovation
ecosystems, requisite skills and competencies, access to economic networks, and characteristic
performance levels necessary to successfully connect to innovation clusters, ecosystems and
emerging industry sector opportunities.
Trim Tabbers
Trim Tabbers are persons whose capabilities provide the higher leverage leadership needed to turn a
matter of importance in the desired direction. Their actions significantly increase the achievement
potential of the group, considerably enhancing the probability of mission success — achieving
exponential impact, rather than incremental outcomes.

4. Trim Tab Organizations
Trim Tab Organizations are entities demonstrating an operational
approach to mission impact based on aggregating key resources,
organizing those resources into actionable, collaborative forms
and highly leveraging them to achieve exponential impact, rather
than incremental outcomes.
Trim Tab Movement
The Trim Tab Movement is a series of high-leverage, organized actions and events of national or
global scale, yet local in implementation and impact, that take place over an extended period of time,
working to achieve exponential impact, rather than incremental outcomes.
