DEFORESTATION
What’s deforestation? :
● Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land. Throughout history and into modern times,
forests have been razed to make space for agriculture and animal grazing, and to obtain wood for fuel,
manufacturing, and construction. Deforestation has greatly altered landscapes around the world.
● Deforestation can rob a country of potential renewable revenues while replacing valuable productive
lands with virtually useless scrub and grassland. Tropical forests provide important renewable resources
that can significantly contribute to national economic growth on a continuing basis. , which you must
keep so that proper credits for our design are given.
● Deforestation causes disruption in the ecological balance. Moreover, it also interferes with the lives of
wildlife and human beings as well. Firstly, when there won’t be many forests left, the water cycle of the
earth will get disturbed. There won’t be enough trees left to absorb the water.

AMAZON
RAINFOREST
Where i s the Amazon Rainforest?
● The Amazon rainforest, covering much of
northwestern Brazil and extending into
Colombia, Peru and other South
American countries, is the world’s largest
tropical rainforest, famed for its
biodiversity. It’s crisscrossed by
thousands of rivers, including the
powerful Amazon. River towns, with 19th-
century architecture from rubber-boom
days, include Brazil’s Manaus and Belém
and Peru’s Iquitos and Puerto
Maldonado.
Life in the Amazon
The Amazon is an incredibly unique place. It is the world’s largest rain forest and river
system, and the most biologically diverse place on Earth. It contains millions of
species, most of them still undescribed.
Both the Amazon’s forest and freshwater systems are at risk. Since the year 2000,
rainfall has declined across 69% of the Amazon forest. WWF estimates that 27% of
the Amazon biome will be without trees by 2030 if the current rate of deforestation
continues. Protecting and conserving the Amazon is no easy task, but WWF has
been working to save this important place.
Amazon
The Amazon is the world’s biggest rainforest,
larger than the next two largest rainforests —
in the Congo Basin and Indonesia —
combined.
As of 2020, the Amazon has 526 million hectares
of primary forest, which accounts for nearly
84% of the region’s 629 million hectares of
total tree cover. By comparison, the Congo
Basin has around 168 million hectares of
primary forest and 288 million hectares of tree
cover, while the combined tropical areas of
Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and
Australia have 120 million hectares of primary
forest and 216 million hectares of tree cover.
VEGETATION
Vegetation is dominated by a classic tropical broadleaf evergreen forest, but a variety of other
plant communities also exist, including seasonally deciduous forest, open woodlands,
grasslands, and wetlands. Local conditions of climate, soils, flood regime, topography, and
drainage determine actual vegetation a a given site. Roughly 90 percent of the region is
covered by terra firme rainforest, an assemblage of evergreen trees growing in three
somewhat indistinct layers that form a closed canopy above a sparse ground layer of
seedlings and small saplings. Since little sunlight penetrates to the forest floor, herbs and
shrubs are few. Tree density is also low, and it can thus be rather easy to walk through the
forest. This forest type is never inundated by the seasonal floods of the Amazon.
About the Fauna
The Amazon is one of Earth’s last refuges for jaguars, harpy eagles, and pink river dolphins,
and it is home to sloths, black spider monkeys, and poison dart frogs. It contains one in 10
known species on Earth, 40,000 plant species, 3,000 freshwater fish species, and more
than 370 types of reptiles. Over 2,000 new species of plants and vertebrates, including a
monkey that purrs like a cat, have been described since 1999.
Fauna in the
Amazon
The Amazon rainforest is a species-rich biome
in which thousands of species live, including
animals found nowhere else in the world. To
date, there is at least 40,000 different kinds
of plants, 427 kinds of mammals, 1,300
kinds of birds, 378 kinds of reptiles, more
than 400 kinds of amphibians, and around
3,000 freshwater fish are living in
Amazon.[1][2]
The Amazon is of vital importance
because people around the world, as well
as locally, depend on the rainforest. Not
just for food, water, wood and medicines,
but to help stabilize the climate—around
76 billion tonnes of carbon is stored in the
Amazon rainforest., The trees in the
Amazon also release 20 billion tonnes of
water into the atmosphere per day, playing
a critical role in global and regional carbon
and water cycles.

DEFORESTATI
ON
The Amazon is reaching an irreversible tipping point. Deforestation in the first half of
2022 was 3 times higher than in the first half of 2017. Deforestation has been
increasing year on year for the last 5 years, with no signs of slowing down. Fires
continue to spread further every summer. We need to act now. Without the
Amazon, we lose the fight against climate change.
DEFORESTATION IN THE AMAZON
RAINFOREST
“When this is over…we will got to the
rainforest, or a beach as white as bone.
We will eat grapes from the vine, we
will swim with sea turtles, we will walk
miles on cobblestone streets. We will
laugh and talk and confess. We will.” ~
Jodi Picoult
15
The leading drivers
of deforestation in
the Amazon are:
Unchecked Agricultural Expansion
Uncurbed expansion of ranching and unsustainable farming practices clear
forests and leaves areas more prone to fires that can quickly become
uncontrolled
Illegal and Unmitigated Gold Mining
Illegal and informal gold mining causes significant ecological and
social impacts in the Amazon, including direct deforestation
and mercury contamination.
Illegal Logging
Not only does logging outside of designated areas
deforests the Amazon, but “selective logging” of
high-value tree species weakens the rainforest’s
interconnected ecosystems.
Poorly-Planned Infrastructure
Ill-conceived roads increase the speed and scope of the
pressure on the Amazon by opening access to remote
forests.
Fires
Fire – a latent indicator of deforestation as forests are felled and then burned to make
way for ranching and farming – can quickly rage out of control. Just in 2019, over
20 million acres of the Amazon were devastated by fires.
Lack of Sufficient
Governance
Lack of appropriate
natural resource
management and
governance,
coupled with high
demand for the
region’s natural
resources, has led
to poor decision-
making on critical
issues.
Climate Change
As climate change
affects global weather
patterns, warmer and
dryer periods will bring
new stresses and
make yearly fire
seasons even more
devastating. The
decreased resilience
of these ecosystems
accelerates the
Amazon’s decline.
Lack of Law
Enforcement
The lack of sufficient
enforcement to
curb illegal
activities erodes
the Amazon’s
precious and
finite resource
base.
